Recommendations for a good ghost story/scary read? Please no Stephen King, as hard as I’ve tried, I just cannot get into his books.

Ghost Story Peter Straub
Yes to Ghost Story.
Lol ya gotta read his older work. Thats where ya gotta start. And a scary read will have to go with Paul Tremblay “A head full of ghost” Peter Straub “Ghost Story” or The Exorcist. But if ya want to start with a SK book go with Pet Cemetary and no its not about pets or Saloms Lot
Cast A Cold Eye by Alan Ryan
Don’t know if you have ever heard of Jonathan Maberry. He has a series, Pine Deep. Very creepy, starts with Ghost Road Blues. It is a trilogy. I actually love all his books, but this series has ghosts as well as other creepy things. Great characters, so much fun.
Yaaassss! The Rot & Ruin an Joe Ledger series are awesome, too!
@Julissa I also like his Mars book, young adult but good. He has a new book coming out at the end of the month, Glimpse. Looks really good. New characters.
@Naomi , I know! I can’t wait. Great to finally meet another Maberry fan ❤
I never heard of him but his books look good! Thanks guys!
Anything M.R. James is wonderful
Ann Rule did a book about haunted places across America that was interesting and creepy. Also podcasts are like mini audio books for me, unless it’s a long car ride cannot so them at all. There’s a podcast from the Parcast network called Tales; and they’re doing Beauty and The Beast and it’s creepy.
Listen to Unexplained if you like creepy podcasts. I’m going to give Tales a try
I subscribe to that, Serial killers and Cults.

An oldie but goodie is Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House.
Oh and The Lottery is pretty creepy for a short story
@Kathy, had to read The Lottery back in high school. A favorite of mine.
Something Wicked This Way Comes – Ray Bradbury

Bradbury could write the phone book and make it interesting.
The ghost of Canterville, Oscar Wilde
The turn of the screw, Henry James
short stories by H P Lovecraft

I recommend this one as well
That’s what I was going to recommend, scariest book I’ve ever read
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
I’ve just read ‘this house is haunted’ by John Boyne and thought it was brilliant.
That was a great book!
Anything Bentley Little.
Simone St. James is great!
All the President’s Men, by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Terrifying!
i agree with you
I really liked The Girl in the Well by Rin Chupeco. It’s YA, and there is one sequel.
A Head Full of Ghosts, Paul Tremblay
The Last to See Me by M Dressler. I could not put it down – this is not a genre I normally read.
Bird Box by Josh Malerman, so creepy and good!
