I just started it. I’m finishing up the first chapter — It seems good. But I finished a couple days ago a really good book Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and it was so hard to put it down that now I feel North & South falls short — But that could change as I get to read more… Have you read it? What do you think of it?
@Rita, I liked the writing style — I feel it is very well written, it keeps you keep reading, has subtle (and on occation open) Dostoyevskyan undertones from Notes from Underground without the excessive Dostoyevskian darkness although it’s pretty dark; and it’s thought–provoking encouraging in-depth discussion about race that I felt it goes well beyond the usual black versus white type of discussion — Even the ending doesn’t give an answer, but leaves us with more questions to consider — Not an easy book, but definitely worth it!
PS. As I’m working my way through North and South, I’m enjoying it — A good read that I wouldn’t have picked up on my own — I assume it’ll continue been as good as the first chapters are.
I haven’t read it yet! I chose Call of the Wild by Jack London since I had some travels this month and needed something that didn’t require as much time as some of these others but I have North and South on my TBR list and would love to hear what those who chose it this month think about it!
Me! I have read it twice by now. I have read it years ago. I have been living in the UK and the differences between North and South still prevail, that’s fascinating.
