Yea. That happens a lot. I’m busy all the time and I can’t hardly make time to read very often because after work I’m so tired I come home eat dinner and tell hubby I love him then go to sleep.
It depends on the situation. If I love the book and I just don’t have time for reading it (and I forget a lot), maybe, MAYBE I will start again from the beginning, but in other case… I don’t know. I would probably not.
Depends on what I remember. More typically, I read a book in a series and don’t have the sequel. So do I reread the 1st book? Again depends on what I remember.
It depends on how much comes back to me. I may never go back to a book that has been idle for so long, as if it held my interest, I wouldn’t have put it down in the first place 🙂
That’s a really good question, Jessey Stahl, and it’s happened to me a lot. Yes, I’d start it over because in a month’s time I’d probably have finished and started other books. Would have forgotten by that time what I’d absorbed from the book I’d abandoned.
Anything written in a distinctive voice and style, that raises social concerns, moves from the particular to the universal, has layered complexity and ambiguity, and deals with basic universal truths. Right now I’m reading ‘The Things They Carried. Some of my more recent were The Underground Railroad, The Secret History (Tartt), Middlesex . . . Use ‘Literary Fiction’ as key words when searching. Man Booker and Pulitzer Prize winners are usually good. I subscribe to the New Yorker and find what’s new in the opening pages there, too.
Nope. I would continue to read where I left it, and even if I don’t still remember what’s the missing in the story, I would still go on because in the end it’s back to me. It always happened to me when I have many things to do. I hope I can read what I want to read, I always just downloading pdf’s or borrowing my friends books for the reason of lacking enough money to buy. ? I prefer nonfiction ?
I do — life hits me hard, sometimes. I teach high school English and often, what I am teaching takes precedence over what I would like to be personally reading. ( i.e. I am currently teaching Life of Pi and The Things They Carried, so it’s hard to ALSO be reading my own stuff on a regular, daily basis.) I also have two elderly parents and an elderly mother in law, two of the three in care homes. I also rescue elderly shelter dogs – have three. So I don’t get a lot of time for reading.
If a new book I’ve requested from the library becomes available, I have to get it read promptly – no renewals. So I may lay aside a book, I just did that with Unnecessary Woman. Not everybody buys books.
It depends if I can remember what was going on or not. I would usually go back 10 pages and start reading, and see if/what I remembered. I have put books down for months, then just picked up and started where the bookmark was.
I don’t but sometimes I put the book down for that long of time because I don’t the right mindset for it and sometimes if I come back to it I actually like it. I usually only do this with books with easy to follow plots not anything non fiction
I do. Not everyone has loads of free time to read, or you just aren’t in the mood for a certain type of book, or it’s rubbish but you want to give it another chance.
Yep, I have short and long term memory problems and I’d totally forget were I left off and probably where I put the book I’ve been looking for an app that can keep track of what chapter I’m in and what book I’m reading
it depends on how much I have read before I put it down. I started reading the silmarillion and only read like the first 12 pages and didn’t find it interesting enough. A few months later I decided to try reading it again and just started over. When I read the hobbit I read like half the book before it felt like I wasn’t the target audience for this so when I decided to finish it I just skimmed through to the last thing I remembered reading.
Nope, I have tried that and I just couldn’t get into it so I started over lol My memory isn’t the best so I can leave the book for a couple of days, maximum a week and that’s it lol
Absolutely! I just ready Mountain Man and Asylum which I bought several months ago. One I started but not very far….now, I read both in 2 days!!! Going thru books like crazy! Need more good scary ones!
So you know the outlander series by Diana Galbadon? I read the first 3 and got distracted and a couple of years went by. Now I want to read them but they are so big! Pretty sure I’ll have to start from book 1 though
I started to read …. A Little Life….. a library copy …. could not read it all in allotted time and had to return …. needed for others …. bought my own copy ….. I now have decided that I will start from the beginning… it is a masterpiece of a book and I want to get the best I can out of it ….will be reading a couple of other books returning to it before the end of the year …
*you’re
?? Are you trying to correct my english?
No. I might go back and review to get the flavor. Also depends on whether it is fiction or non-fiction.
Ha! Can’t get away with anything around here!
Probably from the beginning.
Thank you. I was thinking so to
*too
Depends on if I remember what I had read already.
Yes and no. Quick scan might suffice
Depends on how far into it I got
Half
Personally I’d go back a chapter or two and pick up from there.
No, because if I waited that long I probably won’t pick it up again.
No
It would depend on how much I remembered.
Yes
No. Just keep going.
That’s not happened ?
There is about a 50/50 chance that I would 🙂 It depends
Yep- I do this often. When something (a book) comes along that looks more interesting.
Yes
I would skim.
No. I’m generally working on 2 or 3 at once.
I am the weekly reader Lol I read once a week!
Usually just go back a chapter.
No
Yes, because I usually start mixing up the characters with another book that I put down!
Probably not unless it’s a real technical book that I need to remember lots of details.
I would spell “you’re” correctly.
Ouch! No needles allowed!
Seriously! Please let’s not do grammar police here, please…
We need the grammar police. People just do not know how to read and write anymore.
Most errors are autocorrect errors. I’m just not into public shaming.
This is a book club, a conversation in writing. Typos happen. Auto correct happens. Prefer we focus on ideas.
My tablet is a devil for auto corrections …. gets them wrong every time ….
@Louise Mine too! And when I backspace to correct the mistake, what I actually typed pops up…go figure!
I try that to .. back spacing ….. but some times one just misses the typo….
Well yeah….when you know you typed it right. Plus….mistakes happen that have nothing to do with cognitive thought.
Lol….. love it ….
there are lots of choices. Some books I set one aside and hope to get back to. Some never.
yes
Absolutely….sometimes the timing just isn’t right.
Yes. Sometimes I need a refresher as to what has happened already. ?
Depends on what I remember.
More typically, I read a book in a series and don’t have the sequel. So do I reread the 1st book? Again depends on what I remember.
No, I’d just start back where I left off.
Yes.
Depends on how much i remembered, i’d probably have to start over.
Probably not. Unless I feel really confused when I pick it back up. Usually I’ll just got back a chapter and that works too.
Yes
Just browse to refresh my memory,
Hard to start over , probably into another book by then
Prolly cause im old with no memory.
Yep. I read a book every other day to three days on average. Two many story lines
Sometimes.
If I put a book and didn’t get back to it for a month, I’d figure that I had decided it wasn’t worth reading. I won’t waste time on bad writing.
Not bad writing. Busy life
Its actually a great book
most likely I would start over.
If I liked it, yes..from the beginning though.
Depends on the book, I’d probably go back a chapter and hopefully it all comes back to me
I’m pretty good about picking up books months later and remembering what it was about.
It depends on how much comes back to me. I may never go back to a book that has been idle for so long, as if it held my interest, I wouldn’t have put it down in the first place 🙂
Then do you donate it?
Of course.
That’s a really good question, Jessey Stahl, and it’s happened to me a lot. Yes, I’d start it over because in a month’s time I’d probably have finished and started other books. Would have forgotten by that time what I’d absorbed from the book I’d abandoned.
Nope
I tink the main fing is dont rite nuffin on ere less yous wants you’re grammerr made rite!
No, for some weird reason, I can pick up where I left off.
Restart the chapter or go back 1.
Seldom. I usually figure it must not held my interest so why bother. An exception is non fiction. Sometime I read them in bits and pieces
Maybe after a really long time and only if highly recommended.
Nope
Why? Just keep reading.
Nope, IF I pick it back up!
Probably.
It depends on how much I remember. I might back up a chapter.
Nope.
No way!
No. Not even if I put it down for a year or two. It all comes back within a paragraph or two.
Sure. Do it all the time.
You’re
Depends. Do you remember the gist of it or no? Sometimes I’ll read a few pages just to refresh my memory and then keep going
Depends
No!
??
I would continue reading and if I remember previous reading continue, if not, I would start over!
No, I would maybe re-read previous chapter, but not start over. Too painful.
Yes. I read some dense literary fiction, so I would most likely need to back up and reread.
Can you give me exams of dense literary fiction? I’m always want in ng to learn more and read more challenging material. Thanks.

Thank you @Rosemarie. This then is what I mostly read.
@Misi what are some of your recent favorites?
Nope. I would continue to read where I left it, and even if I don’t still remember what’s the missing in the story, I would still go on because in the end it’s back to me. It always happened to me when I have many things to do. Yes
I will have to read back from the beginning
No I remeber where I left off
Probably! It might depend on how many characters had been introduced.
Nope.
Haha, I never do… maybe that’s why I hardly ever finish them
Who puts a book down for a month
I do — life hits me hard, sometimes. I teach high school English and often, what I am teaching takes precedence over what I would like to be personally reading. I do. Sometimes life gets in the way, sometimes you’re not in the mood for a certain type of book, it happens.
It depends if I can remember what was going on or not. I would usually go back 10 pages and start reading, and see if/what I remembered. I have put books down for months, then just picked up and started where the bookmark was.

Me too ?
I’ve never put a book down for a month. Who does that??
I do. Not everyone has loads of free time to read, or you just aren’t in the mood for a certain type of book, or it’s rubbish but you want to give it another chance.
Maybe
No
If I didn’t remember I would go back and skim to refresh my memory.
Probably not. But then there’s Possession.
It would depend on how convoluted the plot is, and how many characters there are.
Why not?
I would skim from the beginning.
Nope… I’d start from where I left off, I always remember the story as soon as I start reading again ???
Depends entirely on the book. If I pick up at the same place I usually go back a chapter. If the story is really intricate, I’d probably reread.
Nah.
Not with this grammar.
Not usually.
Yep, I have short and long term memory problems and I’d totally forget were I left off and probably where I put the book
I’ve been looking for an app that can keep track of what chapter I’m in and what book I’m reading
I’d probably read a few pages and see if I remembered it. If not, then I’d probably start over.

No
It depends on why I put it down in the first place. I might decide to read it again starting from the beginning though.
It depends on the “why” I put the book down. Was I too busy or was the book boring?
No ie ” it can’t happen here” Sinclair Lewis
Yes, will be doing that soon. Maybe skim over what I read previously.
Yes, because sometimes my book club reading interferes with my own selections
Absolutely! I just ready Mountain Man and Asylum which I bought several months ago. One I started but not very far….now, I read both in 2 days!!! Going thru books like crazy! Need more good scary ones!
Have you read any by Jack Ketchum? More horror.
@Kathy , oh no. I’ll have to browse it!
Sharon Gardner , I only read one. It was terrifying – about a child locked in a basement.
No. Why’d I put it down? Did I get sidetracked? Ahhh! What happens next?
Life.. Work… Kids.. It happens
Depends
nope always got at least six or seven on the go
Oh heaven’s yes. I can’t remember yesterday let alone last month! ??
Possibly
It depends on how far in I was.. if it was a couple of chapter I would.. or, I would only go back a few pages to remember what was going on.
Yes
No
I usually read the Chapter prior to where I left off to refresh my mind as to what was happening before I put it down.
I would not be able to put it down for a month…….that would be my problem….
That’s what I have to do all the time. I’m not the fastest reader… 🙁
not likely. I have already moved on .I’m a fickle date
It depends.
I might! I have to backtrack after I am away from the book for a couple hours
So you know the outlander series by Diana Galbadon? I read the first 3 and got distracted and a couple of years went by. Now I want to read them but they are so big! Pretty sure I’ll have to start from book 1 though
With the Outlander series, starting over after all that time makes perfect sense!
I did the same thing – read the first 3-4 when I lived in Scotland and that was so long ago now I barely recall them.
I just read them last year but I’m already considering re-reading – there’s just so much there. :p
Depends on the author, for some authors I have to make a list of the characters and their relationships, others Keep It Simple and Sweet!
No
I would back up a chapter or two to refresh my memory.
It depends on what I remember!
No
I started to read …. A Little Life….. a library copy …. could not read it all in allotted time and had to return …. needed for others …. bought my own copy ….. I now have decided that I will start from the beginning… it is a masterpiece of a book and I want to get the best I can out of it ….will be reading a couple of other books returning to it before the end of the year …
Love that book ?
Would you consider rereading it at future point ….?
@Louise yes definitely
It is a fab book … even though I’ve not finished it …. plan to make it my December read…..
I definitely would
Depends on the book and how far along reading it I was. I would probably glance back at the previous few pages to remind myself of where I was.
yes. when i really don’t like the book i place it in the give away box.
