I hate: The introvert clumsy geeky girl who instantly becomes an extrovert superstar the second her dream man falls for her. I honestly am struggling to think of one I love Lmao.
I hate when girl meets main boy, falls in love but also falls in love with funny or whatever sidekick. That has only ever worked in one series for me bc it didn’t leave the sidekick broken or used. The triangle love kills me! I love slow romance built subtly over the entirety of the story until you’re screaming at the end for them to just be together ??
I hate: girl who describes herself as “average” but everyone she meets is dazzled by her beauty and she is somehow talented at everything she tries and everyone she meets instantly loves and trusts her. This normally leads to a love triangle cause all men are in love with her.
I love: when two characters have to “pretend to date” cause reasons and end up falling in love ?
I love when one is a stickler for rules/ a book or science nerd and the other a born rule breaker, especially when the rule breaker is a girl (let’s reverse girl sputtering and blushing and boy flashing a cocky grin)
I love the “doomed” relationships, the odd couples, the star crossed lovers. Nothing too easy. Make it a real job to get the goods. I also love the awkward, embarrassing first encounters. A little slapstick comedy that leads to romance.
I hate love at first sight, rushed romances. Don’t confuse that with lust at first sight… I don’t mind that all. But you do NOT fall in love with someone and want to swear an oath on their name just because they’re freaking cute. And if you do, you need help. Seriously.
I love the friends-to-lovers trope, but only if done well lol. However, I firmly believe that men and women can be just friends. I’d love to see more male-female friendships in books.
@Brandi seriously, I wouldn’t have been able to get through either of those series if they’d been stuck with insufferable Adam and Tamlin for the duration
I hate cocky manwhore heroes with no personality that are suddenly reformed when they meet the “right one”. I also hate when there’s a 20 year old business mogul who is a mega billionaire (because there are SO many of those).
I love insta-love ??♀️. Sorry guys, I’m the reason they write those books. I also love a slow burn. It’s complicated.
I hate the unnecessary heterosexual romantic relationships and love triangles squeezed everywhere in the plots that don’t need to be or are uncalled for. Sometimes boys and girls can be only friends with no romance and that’s perfect.
But I do love the trope “enemies to lovers” (that’s very different from abusers and pushy ppl forcing a relationship on the other person). And, please, more LGBTQ+, fat, poc, etc representation is always welcome.
I hate the “he was a bad boy til she came along and they fell in love because she saw through his persona and she understood him. I like when men like plus-size women in books.
I love the fact that they always end happily! I don’t read romance that often, and a lot of my reading is quite dark, and it’s just nice to know that after all the faffing and misunderstandings and whatever else, the main two will end up together? I don’t really have any tropes that I dislike because I love all the corny tropes in Romance!
Loathe the couple breaks up because of a really shallow misunderstanding and we have to watch them hurt for a couple of chapters but they still really like each other. I adore a good love triangle (or whatever sort of polygon depending on the book)
I hate when both characters “fight” about who is more broken or damaged, but there’s no back story to it. So annoying. But I like that YA books can make us relive our teens in fun ways.
Love when a main character is running away from a disaster (stood up at the altar, public embarrassment) and runs into the other main character who whisks them away, either reluctantly or happily.
I hate it when in the spur of the moment, characters figure out that they don’t have a condom handy and the girl simply declares “It’s ok. I’m on the pill”. I work in the pharma industry and big pharma estimates that there’ll be male birth control pills within the next 10 years. I’m hoping romance authors will get the memo and the spur of the moment conversation will go like this: “Oops, no condom!” “It’s ok, I’m on the pill.” “I’m on the pill too. Let’s do this thing.” Maybe that’ll be the the thing I’ll end up loving ?. I also hate the cliché “Oh no, I took antibiotics while on the pill and antibiotics decrease the efficiency of contraceptive pills and now I’m pregnant, but we couldn’t be happier.”
Loving the responses! A trope I loathe is when the angsty bad boy treats everyone terribly and somehow gets the heroine to fall for him. Being a jerk isn’t cute or romantic. A trope I love is when the couple runs away together to be free from a toxic and sometimes oppressive environment.
Hate when the love intrest changes drastically after they’re a couple. Hate the love triangles. Hate the abusive relationships. I love the slow burning romance where they actually get to know each other and respect each other before they start checking them out and lusting over them then calling it love
I hate: The introvert clumsy geeky girl who instantly becomes an extrovert superstar the second her dream man falls for her.
I honestly am struggling to think of one I love Lmao.
I hate when the girl falls for the bad boy and it’s okay that he’s emotionally abusive, because he looooves her.
I love girl/boy next door even though it’s so over done and cheesy. ?
Oh, I hate the bad boy thing too. Being rude is never romantic. However, I have a weakness for the friends-to-lovers trope lol.
I love the whole hate to love thing WHEN it’s done right.
I hate the whole cliche teen romance type. Like I’m talking the “we just met but i love you and see our wedding”
I hate when girl meets main boy, falls in love but also falls in love with funny or whatever sidekick. That has only ever worked in one series for me bc it didn’t leave the sidekick broken or used. @Nicole I forgot about pretend date. Love those too.
I hate love triangles. They piss me off.
I love the “oh no! There’s only one bed!! What will we do?!” situation. ? Even though we all know what’s gonna happen.
Oh another one I love: the “lets just be friends with benefits, no feelings and no strings attached” and we all know what’s next ?
I love best friends brother/brothers best friend. And I hate cheating and love triangles.
I hate: When in a love triangle, it’s the girl with spunk who always gets the guy while the shy and kind girl always loses.
Can’t think of one I love.
I love when one is a stickler for rules/ a book or science nerd and the other a born rule breaker, especially when the rule breaker is a girl (let’s reverse girl sputtering and blushing and boy flashing a cocky grin)

I second this comment ???♀️
i hate love triangles and the damsel in distress trope. i get so aggravated every time i see one.
i love the brothers best friend/best friends brother ? i’m a sucker for books like that
@Abby Those are my favourite too!
Laura Jones they get me every time!!
@Abby I’ve never come across one of the best friend trope! any suggestions?
I hate the male/female best friends. Then they grow up and finally “see” each other and live happily ever after.
@Brandi these are my favorite because this is 100% my husband and I?
@Britt that’s awesome! I’ve just never known anyone whom that worked for lol.. It seems so unrealistic.
My husband and I are best friends now. But we weren’t as kids lol
I mean happily ever after as you can in real life…kids, chaos, etc but still happy!
@Britt lol right.. Story happily ever after and real happily ever after are very different lol
I love the friends-to-lovers trope, but only if done well lol. However, I firmly believe that men and women can be just friends. I’d love to see more male-female friendships in books.
I adore when they pick the less expected one in love triangles… I.e. Warner and Rhys.
@Brandi seriously, I wouldn’t have been able to get through either of those series if they’d been stuck with insufferable Adam and Tamlin for the duration
Right! I am always a sucker for the rebound guy lol. I was team Jacob in twilight too
I hate the cool guy that saves the bookish girl and helps everyone see why she’s so amazing
I love small-town romances that revolve around swimming hole dates and carnival rides
@Krystal i was 100% with you until the insta-love! ?
I know, it’s a sad but true kind of thing ???
Love a hate to love relationships. Hate a hate to love relationship from one one page to another
I hate the unnecessary heterosexual romantic relationships and love triangles squeezed everywhere in the plots that don’t need to be or are uncalled for. Sometimes boys and girls can be only friends with no romance and that’s perfect.

@Ana all of this! ?
Love triangles are so cringe ? I don’t know I’m not much of a romance person but bad boy tropes are my guilty pleasure I guess lol
I’m so over the troubled bad-boy with a thing for nice, innocent women. He’s borderline abusive!! ?
I love witty, flirty banter between the characters.
omg yes! i hate when microagressions are perceived as quirks that the woman has to just overcome.
I seriously stopped reading romance because of it! I kept thinking “woman, get out of there!” A partner shouldn’t be someone you have to save/fix
I hate the “he was a bad boy til she came along and they fell in love because she saw through his persona and she understood him. I like when men like plus-size women in books.

I really dislike insta-love, love triangles, and anything that romanticizes cheating.
I hate it when anyone gets “saved” or changes drastically. I love it when the relationship lasts and grows
Hate: self proclaimed “nice guys”.
Love: LGBTQ relationships, particularly first love. (Dante and Aristotle, Call Me By Your Name)
I don’t like the ‘hate to love ones’ but absolutely love the best friends forever fall for eachother
Romanticizing abusive relationships and they end up together even though its toxic
Love when its well written with chemistry between characters
Loathe the couple breaks up because of a really shallow misunderstanding and we have to watch them hurt for a couple of chapters but they still really like each other.

I think most romance in books are cringe
Hate when the love intrest changes drastically after they’re a couple. Hate the love triangles. Hate the abusive relationships. Wow i sound so bitter sorry??
