Not the best written book by any means. If it hadn’t been for the strange and unexplainable ‘coincidences’ that led to me getting the book in the first place and how these echoed with the themes, I may have thought the same.
I bought it too when the movie came out. Everyone was raving about the Stephen King reference and Easter eggs. I’m guessing the movie must have had more of the 80s cultural references than the gaming.
? I didn’t know any of the hype about this book before I read it and absolutely loved it. But I did speak to someone who only read a few chapters because she wanted to punch Eleanor. I really want to know how she would feel about her reaction when she understood why Eleanor was the way she was – but she won’t read it! ??
I read books that A) I am a Fan of the Writer or the Genre, B) I was given them as a Present – Probably because I am a fan of the Genre and C) We have them in the House and I am a Fan of the Genre, I have sometimes I have sometimes read Autobiographical Boks, like My Animals and Other Family by Gerald Durl, My Animals and Other Family by Clairaldig and Wait for Me by one of The Mitford Sisters and really enjoyed them, The Cklair Balding one and the Mittford one were Presents, The Gerald Durrell one I read at School in a Group and wanted to know if I would enjoy it still which is why I also re-read Animal Farm once, I won’t read tht again and I read Toad of Toad Hall at School so read Wind In The Willowes I might read that again some time, I read The Chocolate Coloured Soldiers of The Apocolypse once because it had Murders but as soon as The Murders were solved the Book went down hill for me.
@Annamarie True! It skipped back and forth through time too much for me and was overly descriptive with a disappointing ending. I do think it would make a good movie though.
Have you ever read one ? I only ask because her ladies are certainly not ‘foo foo’ and her humour and wit make me laugh every time I read one of her books. She would be my desert island choice.
@Patricia Jane Austen doesn’t transfer well to screen or TV, you have to read the books to get the full flavour, social insight and biting wit, plus the characters that leap out at you from the pages.
@Carole Not to worry. I read Jane Austen. My only problem was that you wrote that you thought a poster had not read her. I am not a Jane Austen fan. I am, however, a huge Thomas Hardy fan, knowing that others are not.
@Patricia Well there you go, I’ve never read any Thomas Hardy – a great gap in my reading I know but we had ‘Under the Greenwood Tree’ force-fed to us in school and that was it.
game of thrones! having said that though, that doesn’t mean i won’t end up liking it one day. i might like it sooner or later.
Took me 3 trys to get started but now I’ve read the whole series minus the new one! I found watching the show helped.
after reading mirren hogan’s high fantasy series, i am slightly more inclined to try it one day………………….
the alchemist? paulo coelho
@Guðmunda piece of crap, waste of paper.
Not the best written book by any means. If it hadn’t been for the strange and unexplainable ‘coincidences’ that led to me getting the book in the first place and how these echoed with the themes, I may have thought the same.
I have always felt like I was to stupid to understand how great it really is……….
@Guðmunda Paulo Coelho is rich because of idiots who keep buying his books
Hunger Games
I enjoyed the series the first time I read them, the second time, it seemed completely different, not well written at all.
Ready player one, did not understand it one bit
I was disappointed. I guess you had to be a twelve year old boy in 1985 to understand.
@Danielle agree with you, I bought it when I saw the trailer of the film thought I’d like it but nah was so confused
I bought it too when the movie came out. Everyone was raving about the Stephen King reference and Easter eggs. I’m guessing the movie must have had more of the 80s cultural references than the gaming.

@Lance it’s an American classic! That book changed my life when I was a teenager. I can understand how some wouldn’t like it though.
I wanted to like it. Maybe if I had read it as a teenager I would have seen it differently.
@Lance I actually think the dharma bums is a better book. Big Sur is also great.
@Mike didn’t care for dharma bums that much, but liked it better than OTR.
Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine
? I didn’t know any of the hype about this book before I read it and absolutely loved it. But I did speak to someone who only read a few chapters because she wanted to punch Eleanor. I really want to know how she would feel about her reaction when she understood why Eleanor was the way she was – but she won’t read it! ??

Discovery of witches
The Help!
I don’t believe she is the author actually
@Colinda You mean you think someone else wrote that book?
@Annamarie yes and Im still trying to put my finger on why I feel that way
I think that the movie was better than the book.
This is definitely one instance where the movie surpasses the book by miles.
Catcher in the Rye
The Girl on the Train.
I read that when it first came out , before the hype. Picked it at random at the library. couldn’t believe they made a movie.
@John Right?!
@John The movie was much better!
To Kill a Mockingbird- total snooze
Horrible.
I read that at School in a Group.

Foccault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco. A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking (neither brief nor understandable).
A Wrinkle in Time
I remember loving it as a kid, but I reread it this year and it was just crap.
All The Light We Cannot See and The Night Circus.
A few people have named The Night Circus the cover looks so interesting, but as they say you can’t judge a book by that.
@Annamarie True! It skipped back and forth through time too much for me and was overly descriptive with a disappointing ending. I do think it would make a good movie though.
Red Queen… terrible.
Gone girl….I didn’t like anything about it.
Me neither – gave up quite soon.
I was the only one in my book club who thought it mediocre.
I read halfway through then had to put it down. The characters annoyed the heck out of me.
B. A. Paris books in general.
One Hundred Years of Solitude and Gone Girl
Gone with the wind
I didn’t enjoy The Time Travels Wife for some reason. It’s been a while since I read it though.
East of Eden. It’d draw me in then it got boring.
The alchemist

All the light we cannot see
@Audrey I struggled with that one to
Anything by Jane Austen
Oh, how could you ? Pass me my fan, quick !
@Carole Sorry those foo foo ladies drive me wild.
Have you ever read one ? I only ask because her ladies are certainly not ‘foo foo’ and her humour and wit make me laugh every time I read one of her books. She would be my desert island choice.
I’m with you, Pam. I’m not a fan either.
@Patricia Jane Austen doesn’t transfer well to screen or TV, you have to read the books to get the full flavour, social insight and biting wit, plus the characters that leap out at you from the pages.
@Carole yes of course !! Otherwise why would I comment
@Pam Didn’t mean to cause any offence. Just mentioning that too many people base their opinions on films and TV series.
@Carole I certainly do not. Why would you thnk Pam does?
@Patricia It was just a general comment, not aimed at either of you.
