My boyfriend’s 15-year old son really liked Eragon and the sequels. His 12-year old daughter loves the Keeper of the Lost Cities series. I’d also recommend the Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix and the Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer Nielsen ?? Happy reading!
If they enjoy fiction, anything by Rick Riordan is fantastic. He is one of my favorite authors. I would recommend starting with the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series.
For the girl, my book The Treasure of Milky Lake would be a good fit, as it’s targeted to kids in Grades 4-8. For the boy, my book Kicking from Beyond the 40 would work, as it’s a young adult to adult book. Both are available on Amazon, as well as on the Barnes and Noble website.
Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Bane, basically everything Rick Riordan. Harry Potter. The Hunger Games. Agatha Christie (I started when I was 11 too, but i didn’t fully get them until a year or so later.) A Wrinkle in Time, Alex Rider, Artemis Fowl.
Highly recommend Into the Land of the Unicorns series by Bruce Coville. It was the series that introducted me to Fantasy when I was a kid. It was actually the series I read before Harry Potter came out and that’s how I became such a fantasy genre super fan. It works for both boys and girls, in my opinion. Its got dragons, unicorns, magic, family relationships, and so much more.
For the 14-year old boy: MIDSHIPMAN’S HOPE by David Feintuch (science fiction), A SEPARATE PEACE by John Knowles (realism, friendship), THE THREE MUSKATEERS by Alexandre Dumas (historical and swashbuckling adventure), and LEGEND by David Gemmell (heroic fantasy).
For the 11-year old girl: THE SECRET GARDEN by Frances Hodgson Burnett (realism, mystery), RITE OF PASSAGE by Alexei Panshin (coming-of-age science fiction), STARDUST by Neil Gaiman (charming fairy tale), and THE KING’S DAUGHTER by Suzanne Martel (historical adventure/frontier living with a very positive and happy ending).
My 11 yo daughter enjoyed: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor – Shiloh Gitty Daneshvari – School of fear (3 volumes) Sara Pennypacker – Pax Kelly Barnhill – The Girl Who Drank the Moon Holly Goldberg Sloan – Counting by 7’s. Lynda Mullaby Hunt – Fish in a Tree Pam Munoz Ryan – Esperanza Rising R. J. Palacio – The Wonder A. F. Harrold – The Imaginary and Roald Dahl’ s books
My kids really enjoyed the young James Bond series by Charlie Higson. I think the first book is called Silverfin
