Need book for 9 yo boy. He loves history. Like ‘I Survived’ series, Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
Looking for suggestions for 9 year old boy (3rd Grade).
He loves history. His favorite books are the ‘I Survived’ series, and anything about the Titanic. Also, he loves Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
What about horrible histories?
I’ve never heard of that….
@Heather they’re very popular in the U.K. They concentrate on the messy stuff of history in an age appropriate way. Lots of fun. There’s a series of books covering Egyptians, Romans etc. My elders currently loves the Roman one.
The Who Was series is great
Agreed. My 7 and 10 year old grandsons love the Who Was and What Was books. There are a ton of them. Example:
https://books.google.com/books/about/Who_was_Abraham_Lincoln.html?id=Ue405Ustec8C&printsec=frontcover&source=kp_read_button
@April, there is also a series on Netflix. It’s cute, some toilet humor, but it stays pretty focused on teaching about these historical figures
@Dana thank you!!

Also, check out the National Geographic readers. There are a lot of nonfiction topics.
Mine too!
My 7 year old step son LOVED Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. Read them several times
The Magic Treehouse series
The who was/ what was series and my weird school
He’s a couple books into My Weird School. He likes them!
@Heather both of my kids love them!!
OK, this suggestion is a real stretch for someone his age–but if you buy the books now, he can enjoy looking at the pictures now, and then fall into reading them sometime in the future… Jack Finney’s ‘Time and Again’ is such a fun read, and it’s full of actual pictures from New York in the 1800’s. And the second book in the series, ‘From Time to Time’ features the Titanic. Both are really fun reads.
My son likes the Hazardous Tales series
Ditto!
My grandson likes Dragonbreath series
He should love the magic treehouse kids books, they go back in time and solve mysteries. I loved them as a kid myself, my 9yr old can read them but doesn’t really like them, he’s not a history buff
David Williams book are fun, and David Badiel books – both UK authors.
The Percy Jackson,
Hero’s of Olympus,
Middle school books – James Patterson
Alex Rider/any Anthony Horowitz book
Just a few my lad likes reading…
Dogman is super popular with my kids right now, same author as Captain Underpants
My 3rd grade boy is digging Big Nate right now.
Not sure if these are still available but I used to love the ‘Horrible History’ series ?
@Katie definitely still available — we stock them at the bookstore I work at! ?
Survivor diaries is also good.
Has anyone suggested Hatchet? Has he read it?
Swallows and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome. I wish I’d found these as a kid!
My Side of the Mountain (1959) by Jean Craighead George. I read it recently and enjoyed the wilderness survival tale — I wish I had read it when I was eight!
One of my most favorite books of all time.
Enid Blyton books?
And William series?
Nancy Farmer writes excellent middle grade books
The House of the Scorpion is great chilling Sci-Fi. Coming of age story from point of view of human clone.
How about any of the “Who was…?” Or “What was….?” Books?

My Grandson asked for Spy vs Spy series.
My boys like Nathan Hale’s books!
The scholastic Dear America journals.
Rick Riordan’s books, Percy Jackson Series. A real hit. You read some to him and he will be reading it in no time.
The Time Warp Trio series and when he’s a little older (5th grade?) The 39 Clues series.
Timmy Failure (somewhat similar to Wimpy Kid) and definitely the Horrible Histories series.
Leviathan series by Westerfeld – alternative history. Underland Chronicles by Collins.

My boy loved all you mentioned and then was introduced to the Wings of Fire series and sped through that series fast.

The Nathan Hale Hazardous Tales are Awesome for history loving kids! My kids can’t put them down and our school librarian can’t keep them on the shelf.
Also, Mac B Kid Spy Series by Mac Barnett would probably be right up his alley.
Magic Tree House
Has he read the Titanic trilogy by Gordon Korman? My son really enjoyed them.
Richard Halliburton’s Book of Marvels
I LOVED this book when I was a kid!
