I keep repeating this: Agatha Christie is very reader friendly (and her writing is impeccable).

Kwame Alexander writes especially for picky/reluctant boy readers. His books are outstanding and young teens love him. Crossover won every award tween novel can win including the Newbery: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18222724-the-crossover
Thanks a lot for taking out time for pouring in suggestions
Jason Reynolds is another very talented writer who specializes in turning teen boys into avid readers: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25657130-all-american-boys
This is a thrilling story of a teen top gamer recruited by the CIA: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18222839-dirt-bikes-drones-and-other-ways-to-fly
In the 11 years since this came out I have never had a middle school age boy in my classes who did not love this story (and its sequel). Many chose it as their all time favorite: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/318404.Drums_Girls_Dangerous_Pie
Thank you for this recommendation! I just ordered the set!

Let him find his own way. He’s still in school and is dealing with a lot of stress for a kid, just let him be. He will likely go through a reading funk now and again, but sooner or later he’ll realize that while reading may be tiresome in someways, it’s invigorating and relieving in so many others.
Lead the horse, don’t waterboard it.
How did you go from mystery recommendations for teen boys to water boarding? Yikes!
Lol, it’s all the books I’ve read! JK
Please tell me you know the idiom…
The old ones. Murder on the orient express is s good one and there’s a movie out too now. Agatha Christie!
Thanku
The Guys Read series are wonderful as well: short stories from great authors on a theme. My son and I loved Other Worlds and Funny Business

1984, Clockwork Orange? I may be off base for his age.
Yeah. That’s a bit much for 13.
Will chk, thanku
Lock In by John Scalzi. Sci-fi murder mystery
Thanku
Ask him to “turn in his phone” to you an hour before bedtime.
This is a really good ghost story/murder mystery series for younger readers. https://www.amazon.com/Blur-Trilogy-Book-1-ebook/dp/B00GP2IOR8

This one isn’t mystery but it’s a good young adult book with lots of action and definitely interesting storyline to keep him reading ? https://www.amazon.com/Gone-Michael-Grant-ebook/dp/B0029PBVKM

I forgot about this series. I loved it. So did almost all of my 7th grade students!
Try Minecraft: The Island. Haven’t read it, myself, but it’s been on the top seller list for 18 weeks now. Written by the author of World War Z. It’s gotten good reviews. It’s a novel, (the first official Minecraft novel) not a Minecraft gaming guide. Lure him in with the game, snag him with the adventure story of the novel ?
He loves the game for sure?
Harry Potter
Seriously, even as a kid, going back to reread it makes it something different. I sincerely hope Ms. Rowling can understand the effect she’s had on individuals, let alone the world as a whole.

Not a mystery in the traditional sense, but Ready Player One might catch his attention since it’s based mostly in a virtual world, and the main character is a teenage boy. It’s so good!

My son liked the Artemis Fowl books by Epin Colfer when he was that age. also the Power of Five series by Anthony Horowitz.

This i have 🙂
Mystery by Peter Straub.
Go to the library and let him pick something out. Then read it out loud, taking turns.
The mysterious Benedict society. It’s a series and they’re all great reads
Bridge the gap with video game themed mystery books. A simple google search should help
There’s an adventure/mystery series, Alex Ryder. Its action packed and really cool. Maybe he’ll enjoy it
Take away the video games. They take away the will to exercise engage with others etc. I see my 19 yr old grandson who is overweight and no job sitting in front of the tv playing games.
Alcatraz & the Evil Librarians
There’s a Minecraft novel by Max Brooks he might like since he’s into games.
