The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich always makes me cackle!
For me, the first few were the best. Would laugh so hard I could not speak!
Yes, I’ve now given up on the series because it’s kind of stalled. But I think that Book #2 was funniest.
ANY memoir by Jen Lancaster. Especially her early stuff (Bright Lights, Big Ass; Bitter is the New Black; Such a Pretty Fat) I was reading one while waiting in a doctor’s exam room. A nurse came and checked on me because she thought I was crying. Guess I was laughing that loudly and tearfully
Seriously! I buy all of her books sight unseen. I don’t even read the descriptions until after I buy them. She just wrote her first YA book- not a funny topic! She lives in Lake Forest, IL, which has the highest rate of teen suicides due to academic pressure. Her latest book, The Gatekeepers, deals with this topic. I haven’t started it yet (TORTURE!!!) because I’m saving it for the 2018 reading challenge for “an author with my same name” prompt.
@Jennifer which challenge are you following? Laurie Notaro is similar to Jen Lancaster
Seriously second the Jen Lancaster recommendation. She is my hero!
@Erin Right?! I want to drive up and down the streets of Lake Forest calling her name out my window. It’s only about 30 minutes from me…that’s not crazy, right?! LOL! She also has a podcast that I am addicted to- and I HATE PODCASTS!
Yes I am OBSESSED! And I loved the podcast too
@Erin You are my long-lost book twin!
What was her podcast titled?
@Kristi Stories We’d Tell in Bars
@Jennifer, thank you! Going searching now!!!
How about a laugh out loud with some tears at the end? Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime
Bill Bryson
I’ve only read the one where he goes hiking (A Walk in the Woods?? I think that is the title) I loved it so much that I immediately added all of his to my Wishlist
Absolutely
Ditto
Notes from a Small Island cracked me up!
Anything by David Sedaris! Me Talk Pretty One Day was nonstop hilarious. And his Holidays on Ice could be a fun seasonal choice.
I second this!
Was just going to say David Sedaris.
“the Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo” is absolutely hilarious.
Priestdaddy had me chuckling quite a bit. Jenny Lawson’s books do too
Summon the Keeper by Tanya Huff.
Phebe Robinson’s “No, You Can’t Touch my Hair and Other Things I still Have to explain” was also very funny!
Lamb by Christopher Moore.
Fool!
I also loved Sacre Bleu but not super funny
Dear Bob and Sue is a fun book about a couple who decide to visit all the National Parks. They write letters to their friends (Bob and Sue) detailing their adventures.

Bill Bryson…A Walk in the Woods.
Carl Hiaasen….any book
He absolutely hooked me in with Lucky You.
Sick Puppy was also funny
Shit My Dad Says by Justin Halpern.
Oh my gosh. I was reading that in a doctors office waiting room and was laughing so hard I couldn’t breath. My son, about 8 at the time, tapped my shoulder and asked it was an appropriate book to be reading at the moment. Probably not, son, in more ways than one. Should put a disclaimer for those that get offended by course language, luckily I do not or I would have missed this gem.
Just downloaded this and already laughing out loud.

I know the books have been around for a while, but Erma Bombeck. She was fabulous and the issues of housecleaning, having kids, husbands, and all she wrote about are still pretty much the same as today. And she was funny!

A Man Called Ove
Running with Scissors
Let’s pretend this never happened…it’s freaking hilarious and will make you feel better about your life at the same time
I second this one!
Me too! Furiously Happy, her second book is even funnier IMO. Although I wouldn’t say it made me feel better about my life. It made me admire the author for her strength and made me and many, many others feel less alone.
Agree @Tanya?
A MILLION GIANT METAL CHICKENS YES
It made me feel better about my life because I saw someone being affected by the same struggles I was, and still kicking a boatload of ass and writing BOOKS about it. Jenny is amazing. She’s my patronus. She talks about “34” in Furiously Happy, but SHE IS MY PERSON. And THEN I met the fabulous community when I was willing to come out of my shell a little!!!!!
She is my person as well, there are a few of us here, @Michelle and @Jasmine as well as @Tanya that feel the same way. We’re not like a cult or anything ?? but we are devoted!
“Not like a cult” PFFT. ???
(Kidding. OR AM I?)
I agree on Furiously Happy – in fact I just recommended it, further down in this thread. I laughed so much that I had tears running down my face, my stomach was hurting. I have her other books on my TBR list.

Went to the store armed with my phone to get the books that were recommended. Got so confused that I came home, print this thread, in the process of editing it. Then I will go back intelligently armed?
Of course I did not leave the store empty handed. Since so many of you recommended her I have decided to try it
You won’t be disappointed!
Thanks

Practical Demonkeeping or Lamb by Christopher Moore.
If you’re a fan of Ellen DeGeneres, I’d recommend her book “Seriously… I’m Kidding”. It’s been years since I read it, but I remember that it was hilarious.
