Inspired by Jess Bechtold…what’s your unpopular opinion on a popular book? I personally hated Eat, Pray, Love and The girl with the dragon tattoo.

Ugh-The Goldfinch. Would have made a great novella.
Hated this one too.
Ugh, it was awful
Great story, way too long.
I wanted all the time back from reading this one. Wordy wordy wordy
I cannot tell you how happy I am that this was the first comment. I was getting all revved up to declare my hatred for the book, and here you are, my tribe!
I hated Eat, Pray, Love too.
Definitely hated this one too. But I enjoyed the movie with Julia Roberts!
This is the only book I did not finish.
I so wanted to love it, but by mid book, I couldn’t do it anymore lol
I liked the eat part and the pray part I think. Not the love part. It’s been a while since I read but I seem to recall liking it at first and gradually thinking it was stupid and patronizing or condescending or something. Like i wish I had the money to just go ‘in search of myself’!
Very patronizing!!
I agree with Jenifer! I liked the Eat and the first part of Pray, then it got dumb.
So pretentious!!!
I hate both of those as well.
Didn’t care for The Nightengale or Catcher in The Rye.
Wild.
Same.
Ditto
I could not get through Wild…
I finished it, but wished I hadn’t bothered.
I read the first few chapters and felt it was so poorly written I couldn’t finish. However, loved the movie.
Gone Girl…ending was not as great as they said. But I loved Gillian Flynn’s other two books.
Ditto
Exactly this!
Yep. All of the characters could have spontaneously combusted and I would not have cared
I LOATHED Fates and Furies and really disliked My Brilliant Friend so much I couldn’t finish it.
I also LOATHED Fates and Furies!!
If you’re on Goodreads, check out Shelby’s review. It’s hilarious. That one is either a love it or hate it.
@Gina Totally spot on – it was a pretentious hipster that chose this book for our family Thanksgiving read, too!! LOL.
It was SO overwritten and bloated. I listened to the audio, which made them even more unlikable. A week of my life I will never get back.
Tried Girl with a Dragon Tattoo three times and could never get past the first chapter. It read so dry to me.
I had to push myself to get past the first 100 pages, but the payoff was worth it.
Same!!!
I think IT by Stephen King is so overrated and isn’t even close to one of his best books.
What’s your favorite King book?
The Stand is probably my favorite, but The Shining is a close second. Pet Sematary wrecked me, probably because my son was the age of the boy when I read it. I like more books by him than I don’t like, but I just thought IT was disappointing.
I love The Stand too! My fav is Needful Things.
I have not read Needful Things yet. It’s on my list!
Agree
Love The Stand and Dead Zone. Hated Misery. Pet Cemetary freaked me out!!! The Shining was good. It actually scared me 🙂
The Shining is one of my all-time favorite books. I really appreciate King when he uses the supernatural to tell what is essentially a story about family.
Twilight….was just awful imo…but its also not my preferred genre.
Eat, Pray, Love ?, Wicked?Loved the musical, but hated the book.
Hated Wicked. Maybe the musical is better.
OMG the musical is WAY better. It’s my favorite musical. The book was painful to read.
Ready Player One. Loved the movie, but I couldn’t get past page 50 of the book.
Wicked, The Lovely Bones, Twilight, all ugh!!!!
I find Maguire’s books in general overwritten and unpleasant reading.
I totally agree!!! I love the concepts, but dislike his writing…. a lot!
Hated Wicked!
Girl with a Dragon Tattoo and 50 Shades of Gray.
Twilight. Ugh.
Elenor Oliphant. Just couldn’t do it.
Woman in cabin 10, the girl with the dragon tattoo, the girl on the train and I’m sure many more. My husband says if is a book is popular it’s pretty much the kiss of death for me.
I’m the same way…if its popular I’m completely turned off by it.
If I dislike ALL the characters I am done
@Kelly so glad it’s not just me!
@Becky no not at all….some of the best books ive ever read are titles that no ones ever heard of♡
@Kelly yes!!
I read super fast so barnes &noble isnt really in my budget so yard sales, flea markets and estate sales are my jam♡ found so many books I’ve come to treasure.
Also hated Eat, Pray, Love & The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo… I hated the Harry Potter books, The Da Vinci Code … and most recently- Baby Teeth
Omg I was wondering if I had the guts to admit I couldn’t get through the Harry Potter books! Da Vinci Code – barf.
Eat, Pray Love. The Bridges of Madison County.
❤️The Bridges of Madison County. Try the movie. Cried my eyes out, but loved every minute of it.
Not a fan of Eat, Pray, Love.
Eleanor Oliphant & The Husband’s Secret
I loathed The Husbands Secret. It made me ragey for days.
I also bailed on Eleanor
I didn’t love Eleanor but I finished it.
The Time Travelers Wife. Hated it soooo much!!
Yessssss I never could get paat the first chapter
Absolutely!
@Kelly I finished it, and some parts were ok, but overall I thought she was a very weak character. The end was especially pathetic to me.
Ditto.
Crazy Rich Asians. I tried to read it 3 times…no go for me.
Me too, the movie was good though
I’m so glad I saw the movie first – just finished the book this week
The Notebook -?
Omg yes this was my other one!!
I’m sick of women’s thrillers like The Perfect Mother and Bring Me Back. Once in a while, I’ll hit a decent one, but usually they’re just a mess. I’m reading Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter which is kind of one.
Harry Potter. I’m sure they’re well-written and I’m happy if they get kids to read, but I cannot stand fantasy.
Farenheit 451. I had to put it down after several chapters. And it is VERY difficult for me to stop a book.
Read this in high school…it was torture
The Girl on the Train. I wanted to reach into the pages and physically wrest the alcohol from her hands
Same! The narrator was so awful. I had no sympathy for her.
Could not finish Eat, Pray, Love…
Oooh, I inspired a thread. Internet celebrity ? ? Mine are obv Baby Teeth, Woman in Cabin 10, and also Woman in the Window – that thing dragged on wayyyy too long.
I felt like an internet celebrity when I got that little coffee cup conversation starter thing
I am so relieved to see others feel the same way about Eat, Pray, Love. I thought it was awful and couldn’t finish it
Woman in Cabin 10 (hate Lo). Chronicles of Narnia
I just can’t get through Outlander…….I keep trying and keep putting it down…..
Yeah…..I finally did because a friend said it started to get better. Then I started the second book and I’m just over it.
?
Thank you!!!!!
It’s like you’re a visitor from another planet if you don’t like the Outlander. I read a couple chapters, hated it immediately. Could not understand for the life of me why my whole family loves this book. Picked it up again, slogged through another five chapters and chucked it. Ugh!!!!!
Yes! So many people love Outlander but it’s just not for me. I struggled through the first one and gave up half way through the second book.
Guess its popular opinion to dislike this book lol
Hated Pride and Prejudice! Could not make myself finish it.
Me either!
Preach!!! My friend!
Have you tried Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? That one was pretty good.
@Rebecca it would have to be better than the classic. I wanted to like it but my head kept screaming Nooooooo!!!!!
I have never actually read the classic, only the spoof version. Lol!
The Nightingale. I liked it. But I did not love it.
All of the Twilight books and Harry Potter.
I liked the first Harry Potter books, but they got to be too much by the end. I didn’t read any of the Twilight books. Saw the first movie and knew they weren’t for me.
Twilight is just atrocious writing. It had the potential to be good….and it just wasn’t.
Hated Eat, Pray, Love…never finished it. I can’t read Jodi Picoult books because, while I think she’s a really amazing writer, I’m never invested enough in any of her characters to read more than a few chapters.
Hated Eat, Pray, Love and Under the Tuscan Sun
Same for me for Eat Pray Love. Someone gave it to me … I couldn’t do it. Gave it away!
Fates and Furies, The Secret History, 50 Shades, The Awakening, Eat, Pray, Love (though apparently everyone hated that one)
Harry Potter ?? And Eat Pray Love was horrible couldn’t even finish it
Hated Eat, Pray, Love
I think this has been talked about several times but 50 Shades of Grey. I got through about 20 pages and couldn’t finish it because Christian was to controlling and the woman was to flighty.
I read like the first 3 pages and was like nope, but not my kind of book.
Mine either!
I finished the first one and I have no idea why. I threw the second one across the room after the first 25 pages – Christian is the WORST.
I completely agree! I don’t understand why so many woman are drawn to him.
Another hater of Eat Pray Love! Didn’t see what the fuss was about with Girl On the Train.
Couldn’t finish All the Light We Cannot See.
I didn’t like that one either. I made it to the end – never got any better.
Me too
Another one I couldn’t finish – Devil in the White City. All those architectural details… ?
I loved the book but at first hated all the architectural details. Later in the book I looked forward to the break from the killer. A few years after I read the book I was in Chicago and did a boat architectural tour and found I recognized a lot of buildings from the book!
I didn’t like Eat, Pray, Love. Couldn’t relate and I think I remember being annoyed by the author.
You don’t know how happy I am to see all of you fellow haters of Eat, Pray, Love. Someone gave it to me after she RAVED about it. Ugh. A couple of pages into Pray and I gave up. It’s very rare for me to quit a book, but I didn’t think twice about quitting it! I went to the movie thinking maybe Julia Roberts would liven it up for me. Nope! Hated the movie too. I feel like all the author did was whine. Yuck. Bleck. Ick.
She is a big whiner, her other books are awful too. I liked the movie but the book, bleh.
I tried to read the first Twilight years ago, when it was new. Made it thru about 40 pages, quit, and asked my friends what the hell was wrong with them.
I feel like hating Twilight IS the popular opinion.
I hate, with a blinding white passion, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society.
I tried to read it 7 years ago. I don’t think I’ll be trying again.
Me too.
Loved Harry Potter and Girl with the Dragon Tatoo but also didn’t finish Devil in White City and still not interested enough to look at 50 Shades.
Guernsey I hate. Half of Eat Pray Love made me wretch. She thought she knew pain. She was a pain. I’ll show her pain lol. What a whiner. I wanted her to make it 100% just one or two full and total years single. She made me pissed off
Could never make it through Harry Potter, Girl on a Train was awful and The Last Mrs. Parrish was even worse.
I couldn’t make it through Girl on a Train. Just ugh
The Goldfinch. Started out great and then became a grinding chore to get through. It was in dire need of an editor.
I hated the characters in Gone Girl and the book in general.
I couldn’t even feel sorry for the husband.
Me either.
Pillars of the Earth. Nope. Can’t get through it.
The Hours ??♀️
Made me want to kill myself?
@Pam, I kind of think that was the author’s intent! “How can I make people cry? Aaaaaand go!”
@Jessie , absolutely ?
I hated Eat Pray Love. I thought I was the only one who disliked it.
Hated it!
The Nest! It was awful, slow moving, and I didn’t like a single character. It had been recommended to me over and over again and was an Oprah’s book club pick but I truly don’t understand why.
I agree
I also hated Eat Pray and Cry all the way through the damn book. My next favorite to hate is The Night Circus. While the author gave lovely visuals, nothing really happens of consequence. So boring.
I could not even make myself finish Eat, Pray, Love as I hated how self-indulgent the author sounded!
Same. Donated it after I read maybe half
Girl, Wash Your Face. I kept thinking, “Congrats, you made it. Now you are obnoxious and at 30-something you know life. Brava.”
I also hated The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and ended up throwing It at my fence 3/4 of the way thru it long after it SHOULD have ended!!
Hated Eat Love Pray. Should have been called Eat Love Pray Puke. Needed alcohol to get thru it.
? ❤️ ?? ?
EPL was the first book I didn’t finish. I hated it with every fiber of my being.
I HATED Gone Girl. There was absolutely nothing redeeming about the main characters, and I gave up less than 100 pages in because I wasn’t going to waste my time in horrible people. UGH.
It was one of my favs. But I know what you mean. It was quite twisted.
I absolutely could NOT make myself read Eat Pray Love. I couldn’t even watch the movie.
I watched the foreign films (3), on the dragon tattoo which I liked, but never felt compelled to read them! Lol! I didn’t care for the remake
I actually hated both books until I saw Eat Pray Live the movie. I loved the ratio series in audio.
Sing, Unburied, Sing …. so much ? in that book.
I found The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo annoying to the point I gave up on it halfway through, and I NEVER do that!
