Yes I go through spells where I’ll go through like 4 books in two weeks and then I’ll be off them until something catches my fancy and starts it all over.
I need to take breaks and do something else like walking the dog, a mindless household chore, watching tv or chatting with a friend. Then I can enjoy quietly immersing myself in the book again.
Every once in awhile I go through a slump when I’m stressed and can’t focus so reading isn’t fun. I will need to give myself a break and eventually it comes back.
Yep! Sometimes I just don’t feel like it- I have trouble getting into multiple books, so I set them aside until the urge strikes again. Sometimes I get stuck in a book hangover, where anything I try after a phenomenal read can’t possibly compare. In those times, I return to old favorites or find the next in a series (currently The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency- those ladies have gotten me out of a book funk many times with their comfort and charm)
Yes, but that’s when I get a good biography like Frank Zappa or Johnny Cash & if that does not help I read a book about a country I would like to travel to. I’m currently reading Slash’s biography. Those types of books help clear my mind so I can truly start back reading other books again. So, I can say I do not stop reading but change up the type of books I read.
Previously, no. I was always ready to read, several books at one go. Nowadays, though, it’s a little difficult to read more than a few pages at a time.
Yes, absolutely. Especially when I am really into “WORDS.” But a few weeks later I go back to the book. When I get up during the night, I just can’t go right back to sleep so I read for awhile and I can feel myself getting sleepy, so I put my Kindle away and go back to sleep.
there were whole years, right after college, when reading did not seem fun and i thought i’d lost it, but…i just had to wait to find the right book to inspire me to read again.
Excellent question. I had a year when I read voraciously, almost compulsively. Then I felt like I was just consuming books, not savoring or enjoying them. I slowed myself way down, and now I try to embrace times when I’m not reading (too tired, too busy). The urge always comes back; reading is a great source of comfort for me!
Yes sometimes I do go through dry spells – usually the worst is when I’m in what I call a “series hangover” – where I fall in love with a series and once I’m done, I can’t get into anything else for awhile.
Yes. That was especially after I graduated college. I couldn’t even look at a book for years. I only read newspapers & magazines. And some books are just hard to get in to, the first time.
Sure- life gets busy, my brain won’t settle down, the sunshine is calling etc. I’ve gone long stretches without reading and then I pick something up that’s so compelling I just want to forget the world and disappear into it!
Sometimes if I’m in mourning after just finishing a book or series that I loved. Some books require processing time after they are finished being read.
I may go through “dry spells” where my reading material seems lacking. Then suddenly the “right” book gets in my hands and I’m overjoyed and hooked again. I generally read myself to sleep every night!
Yes. I am going through a period where I prefer to read magazine articles rather than invest the time it takes to read a book. For instance I recently read a story in the New Yorker about Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs. It was both interesting and entertaining! I feel the same way about movies. I don’t really feel like investing 1 1/2 – 2 hours watching a movie. Maybe it’s because I am old and know I’ll go to sleep before I’ll finish!
I had a month long slump last year but I appear to be making up for it this year. Last year I had to work at meeting my Goodreads Reading Challenge, this year I’m already 8 books ahead.
That happens? The only time it’s happened to me is when I’ve had a migraine. I really, REALLY love to read. When my children were young, and my life was busier, I read Psychology journals, and short stories, etc.
Sometimes I don’t want to read but it does feel right to not be reading of you know what I mean. It is kind of like a addict.I just cannot not be reading ?!
Ahhhhhh no. Not ever. I can’t imagine not reading every single day. It’s a part of me, I am a reader and I know things, LOTS of things. I’ve been EVERYWHERE on this planet. I’ve met the most extraordinary people. And it’s all because I read. It’s one of most wonderful things (including music) that gives so much pleasure. And all you have to do is open a book and read. That’s it.
I suffer from depression, so that occasionally causes long periods where I don’t feel like reading anything, though sometimes I can read my way out of my depression by turning to some favorite comic works (P. G. Wodehouse’s oeuvre, Richard Feynman’s “Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!”, Allie Brosh’s “Hyperbole and a Half”, James Thurber’s “My Life and Hard Times”, etc.).
I don’t read as much in the nicer weather. Winter is my most active time. I would appreciate belonging to a book club but I don’t think I’d get much done in Summer.
Yes. I go through book phases and movie phases. I also go through phases, like now, where I want to read something, but nothing sounds good even books I’d previously been dying to get to.
Um, sure. Right after I don’t feel like breathing.
Yes I go through spells where I’ll go through like 4 books in two weeks and then I’ll be off them until something catches my fancy and starts it all over.
On occasion. You can pick up a dozen books, and none of them hold your interest. That’s when I reread an old favorite or two and it passes.
I have days that I don’t read. It sometimes depends on how busy I am. Everybody is different:)
Sometimes
can’t think of a time
nope
Yup! I’ll read through a handful then drop off for a week or so to digest those I read before starting the cycle again.
Sure. That’s when I knit and listen to a book.
never
Only if I’m really stressed out and can’t concentrate well enough to comprehend what I’m reading. Doesn’t happen very often.
Yes. I love to read but I go through times when I don’t feel like reading.
Never
Haven’t had the feeling in a while.
Yes. I go through my spells.
Only when I have a migraine and can’t open my eyes.
Yes. Try an audiobook or podcast. Keeps the brain going from a different perspective
I need to take breaks and do something else like walking the dog, a mindless household chore, watching tv or chatting with a friend. Then I can enjoy quietly immersing myself in the book again.
Yes, when I’m preoccupied by other things going on. I used to be able to escape into books but not so much anymore.
Me, too. I feel like I have lost my superpower ?
I can’t go to sleep at night unless I’ve read at least a chapter of whatever book I’m currently reading. So I’m reading every day for at least 30 min.
Sure! When it happens, I go do something completely different like watch movies, go hiking, whatever. I always come back though 🙂
Right now. I’d rather talk to you guys
Yes. If I can’t concentrate or maybe have a less than thrilling book started.
Sure, just not often.
The podcast The Moth is amazing! People tell peronal stories and its really !

Yes, like right now I have 20+ books I haven’t read yet, 2 from the library, and I don’t feel like reading any of them.
No… I’ll read anything
Yes. Sometimes for months. But it doesn’t happen often.
Not often, but definitely go through phases where it happens!
Yes. I’ll read nonstop for months and then take a break.
Every once in awhile I go through a slump when I’m stressed and can’t focus so reading isn’t fun. I will need to give myself a break and eventually it comes back.

I read anyway……it is on my daily list of things to do!
No
When I am sleep.
Previously, no. I was always ready to read, several books at one go. Nowadays, though, it’s a little difficult to read more than a few pages at a time.
When I’m too tired, I can’t get through a page without snoozing.
Yes, I have so many books I want to read, I can’t decide which one, so I don’t read any of them…
Yes, absolutely. Especially when I am really into “WORDS.” But a few weeks later I go back to the book. When I get up during the night, I just can’t go right back to sleep so I read for awhile and I can feel myself getting sleepy, so I put my Kindle away and go back to sleep.
Yes, recently I have been experiencing this more & more. I just can’t find the time & am too tired or have too many other things to do.
when i`m really tired i just can`t concentrate on reading.
Yes. Especially if I have a deadline on a book that I don’t care about.
No
Absolutely. I have dry spells where I seem to just lose interest. Don’t we all?
Nope.
Never
Yes!
All the time. I feel like I can’t find a book that keeps my interest or aggravates me. So, I take a break.
Yes.
Yes, but then I watch an hour of popular TV & it goes away.
No
I probably do, but this moment has lasted since I was 5….I’ll let you know.
Sometimes my eyes really hurt. I’m old.
Sure. Then I pick up the camera and go outside. Or watch a movie or something.
Yep. I tend to binge on books. Either read like mad or not at all.
Me too!
I find I read seasonally- like now is a time when I love to read but December not so much
Yes. While I was pregnant I couldn’t read. I don’t know why. When I am extremely exhausted I can’t. Maybe it’s when I’m anxious…
It’s rare! But when I am mentally flogged. I can’t read!
No
Yes, sometimes.
there were whole years, right after college, when reading did not seem fun and i thought i’d lost it, but…i just had to wait to find the right book to inspire me to read again.
Yes, I sure do and I work at the library. It doesn’t mean I quit reading, just want explore the world between books. ?
No
Excellent question. I had a year when I read voraciously, almost compulsively. Then I felt like I was just consuming books, not savoring or enjoying them. I slowed myself way down, and now I try to embrace times when I’m not reading (too tired, too busy). The urge always comes back; reading is a great source of comfort for me!
Only when I’m otherwise engaged.
No, just moments with no time to read.
Of course, and I’m glad. Otherwise I’d be sitting on my butt all the time.
Yes. Especially after I’ve read a crappy book. I get kind of disheartened.
On occasion- it doesn’t last long!
Yes. It’s natural I think! But I always return to it!
If I have read an especially great book ,I have a period of time when others seem to not hold my interest.
I always want to read. But, the months after having my children, I find it practically impossible to get into any book.
Nope!
At the end of a very long day all I want to do is sit on the couch, eat cookies and watch The Office
I saw the British original first, then the US series. Ricky Gervais was so unique and hilarious, but I liked the other one, too. ?
There are just times, even for book worms.
It’s funny. It’s not exactly like I don’t feel like reading but if I don’t feel like thinking I will reread.
Yes sometimes I do go through dry spells – usually the worst is when I’m in what I call a “series hangover” – where I fall in love with a series and once I’m done, I can’t get into anything else for awhile.

Sometimes if I’m in mourning after just finishing a book or series that I loved. Some books require processing time after they are finished being read.
Yes
Some of the assigned books in high school and college- no where near what I read for myself at the time.
Yup
I may go through “dry spells” where my reading material seems lacking. Then suddenly the “right” book gets in my hands and I’m overjoyed and hooked again. I generally read myself to sleep every night!

Yes. We all have slumps, I think. Our brains get full. Don’t worry. It will pass.
I had a month long slump last year but I appear to be making up for it this year. Last year I had to work at meeting my Goodreads Reading Challenge, this year I’m already 8 books ahead.
Of course!

Yes sometimes. I take a break for a few days, sometimes. Then dive back in!
Sometimes I don’t want to read but it does feel right to not be reading of you know what I mean. It is kind of like a addict.I just cannot not be reading ?!
Sometimes but try to read every day
Very seldom!
Totally. I get in a funk. but when I get out of it….watch out!!!
Yes!
Ahhhhhh no. Not ever. I can’t imagine not reading every single day. It’s a part of me, I am a reader and I know things, LOTS of things. I’ve been EVERYWHERE on this planet. Yes.
Have, you’re here, too!
Yep!?
Yes, and I know I need to rest and regroup…
Nope!
When I’m brushing my teeth ?
Yup! Is usually because I need sleep! ?
Not often!
I suffer from depression, so that occasionally causes long periods where I don’t feel like reading anything, though sometimes I can read my way out of my depression by turning to some favorite comic works (P. Yes when I’m sick or really tired
I have a conflict between knitting and reading. Seems that there is no time for both
Yes! I have the same problem!!
Audiobooks.
Yes
I read every night before I go to bed. I read to my dog as we both drift off to sleep. I try to read at other times, but bed time is the easiest.
Only when I’m so exhausted I can’t hold my eyes open. ? Zzzz
No.
I don’t read as much in the nicer weather. Winter is my most active time. I would appreciate belonging to a book club but I don’t think I’d get much done in Summer.
If I finish a book that was especially good, sometimes it takes me a few days before starting another one.
