I’m finally beginning to get hooked on reading! Just wondering…in a few words, what does reading mean to you?

Escape
Yes. This.
That moment you realize your only friends are from the book you’re reading…
Break from my life
Anxiety relief
@Andrea for me as well!
Freedom
Escape
It means many things to me.
Adventure, escape, learning, growing, history.
All this too.
Peace and quiet, escape.
Escape from depression
It’s me time, adventure, escape from reality, learning
Escape. As a small child my life was chaotic. Constantly changing and not stable. Grandparents and books stabilized my brother and I both. We went to a Montessori school and were both reading before we turned three. I honestly don’t remember not being able to read. In kindergarten we went through dick and Jane. I read the whole book that day then was exasperated by the slow pace of the “class read”. I see my granddaughter now is the same. She’s already trying to read. Knows all her letters and sounds and she’s just three. My little mini.
Escape
A trip to an adventure world ?
An escape to get away.
Relax time
I love it for having an adventure and connecting with another persons mind and a world they created. Non fiction is great to learn about real lives or to learn something.
@Tara yep I’m the same! Love learning and being interested for the same reason
‘Escape’ seems to be number one so far, followed by ‘adventure’ ?
Being able to be someone I’m not. Living in someone else’s world for a while.
Escape.
escape. adventure.
the ability to live beyond the confines of reality. to see through different eyes. to feel the experience of others.
stories are essential for human growth, in my opinion.
Escape
Escaping reality for awhile at least
Time travel ?
knowledge
Relax after a long day
An escape in a good way!!
A look into someone else’s life through their eye
It’s a way of taking a vacation without leaving your living room
Education, empathy, adventure
Understanding different views on life.
Fun and relaxation.
Escape mostly, I think. I’ve always been an avid reader but life gets busy and I’ve spent most of my adult life in school having to read academic texts and papers. Now that I can finally read for pleasure, I can’t get enough! My dad passed away recently, so nowadays reading helps take my mind off my heartache. It puts other thoughts in my mind and gives me something to look forward to (as long as it’s a really good book!)
A path to power.
Relaxation, getting lost in the story and when I have finished recommending and passing the book onto my friends if I think they will enjoy it as well. This club has given me so many good recommendations that I downloaded a library app to keep track of them all.
My time
Relaxation/ escapism / my time

@Kathy me neither. That’s my consolation when I am upset. LOL I can escape and go somewhere else then.
@Charlotte Yes indeed! I read…therefore, I am!
Sanity
It’s my ME time!
Comparable to breathing
Escape
Nourishment to my soul!
Relaxing and personal growth
Loved this thread- same for me- escape, adventure, learning- but the best books give you a perspective you hadn’t thought of much before.
Reaxation, pleasure, escapism and with historical fiction a chance to go back in time – and what would I give to be able to do that and see how they lived then.
Relaxing, entertaining, enjoyable and mind expanding!
Going into a library or into a book store is something that I look forward to doing!
Relaxation and enjoyment
It’s relaxation!
Relaxation and an escape.
Escape
my first response
Too many to list it’s just so different to watching a film. Being able to imagine the world someone else has created through your mind.
Relaxation, enjoyment, escapism, entertainment and the ability to go anywhere, do anything and meet so many different characters.

Escapism
It’s something to do when I’m bored to death
To escape and fantasize
I love getting lost in the story. I find it a form of escapism.
Escape
It is a way to escape to a new world
Reading is life. I feel sorrow for the illiterate, who cannot read, for all they are missing. I feel frustrated by the aliterate, those who can read but choose not to. Why do they limit their knowledge and experience of the world and its many adventures?
Escape…
It’s an escape from my ocd mind
Everything. It is my lifeblood.
A way to live someone else’s story.
New worlds, escapism, talented writing, beloved characters.
Total – utter – enjoyment 🙂
Gaining knowledge & learning life lessons..
Escape from the stresses of life by doing the thing that relaxes me most…..jumping into other peoples lives.
Solitude.
Escapism.
Adventure
Relaxation.
Learning new things.
Reading is a way of life
An escape, relaxation, happiness, learning
It is who I am. Words are the blueprint to everything and reading can bring comfort, joy, sadness, emotion and empathy. I tell my students everyday, if you are a fluent reader then you can accomplish pretty much anything as you have more understanding and knowledge of a wide range of subjects.
Love to read
Solitude and relaxation!
Escape from reality
Limitless adventure and exploration
Fantastical getaway.
Escape!!!
Peace/Relaxation because it requires you to be in the moment.
Escape.
Escape from reality.
Inspiration, power, entertainment
Escapism and prioritising myself
Peace knowledge joy comfort
Escapism x x x
Escape
Most of what has already been said on here already for me. It brings a relaxing peace with it (with the right book) as Well as a sense of belonging in some books.
Being able to visualise life though other peoples’ eyes and getting to live a thousand times in different times and places.
It educates me It relaxes me It takes me away
Continuous learning, connecting with others.
New worlds
It turns my ordinary life extraordinary.
Reordering my mind
Escape
Same as breathing. I’ve read since I was able at age 5. Maybe 2 books a week for the past 60 years. I cannot understand people who don’t read
Getting lost in a new dimension ❤️
