Finally reading Eleanor Oliphant. I’m about 1/3 of the way through and wondering if it gets better. Should I stick with it?

No
Oh gosh yes. I loved it
I loved it! I listened on audio
Absolutely!! Takes a bit to get the hang of her!
It took me a long time with that one, but I’m glad I stuck with it.
I gave up on it and have no regrets lol
Oh my gosh, I’m surprised to read everyone’s opinion about this book. I’m halfway through and I’m really enjoying it!
Same…gave up, no regrets. Kind of wondering if I should try it again though, bc everyone seems to love her so much.
Please try again
I finished. Should have given up though. I think either you like it or you don’t, but if you don’t like it now, I don’t think you will as you read further either.
Yes, stay with it; SO worth it.
No. It doesn’t get better. Don’t waste your time
I really liked it!
I gave up
I LOVED it!
I really enjoyed it!
Her story is that of an onion. You start at the surface, but will be peeling back the layers of the onion
I really enjoyed it.
So in the early parts of the book you may notice the perspective is skewed. I thought it got better and better the more of Eleanor
I could see
I loved it too
Yes!!! It took me two tries to get through it, but I’m so glad that I did!
I loved it. I loved getting to know Eleanor and hope there’s a sequel so we can hear more of her story.
It gets better for sure!
It’s worth it
Nope!
It’s worth it!
I loved it!
It was a slow start for me, too, but definitely stick with it – it’s worth it!
I really loved it! Try sticking it out.
I loved it, and her. Really loved her voice and no nonsense attitude. I just finished it and I miss her already. And then there’s Raymond…❤️
It’s definitely worth it! ?
The beginning had me like, “This is bull(bleep)” and “How is this supposed to be good?” and then it got a LITTLE more interesting and then it was “HMM!” and then about 3/4 or so I was like, “This is SO GOOD!” and I feel like the stuff that seemed boring was necessary for the character and conflict development.
Did not like it at all. I finished it, but wish that I hadn’t wasted the time.
Yes; took me a while to get into but then really enjoyed it.
Nope. I finished it, hoping it would get better, but it didn’t.
Oh yes! Keep going!
I wasn’t a huge fan, but I did finish it.
I’m not quite 1/3. I know I’s read many people say to stick with it, but dang, if Eleanor isn’t frustrating. I’m sorry she is damaged and clearly Seen Some Shit. But she’s also terribly rude and making everyone around her awkward…..
(Sorry folks. I couldn’t resist ‘I’s’ from last week. ?)
@Megan you’ll understand once you know her full story.
Such mixed reviews! So interesting
It took me 3 tries but I’m so glad I read it.. absolutely loved it!!
Felt the same way, when I finished I felt it was lovely.
I was hooked after the first chapter, so I don’t know that it gets “better,” but it’s a fabulous story. One of my favorite books I read this year.
I agree! I couldn’t put it down.
Loved the title. Thought the book was meh.
I appreciated the book when I was done but it was a struggle the whole way through for me. It never got easier to read.
Yes I have to say stick with this one. It’s worth it!!!
I felt the same way. I’m grateful that I powered through because it easily ranks in the top 25 books I have ever read. You just fall in love with her slowly.
Eh it was a slow read for me too. I wish I had abandoned it.
I almost gave up but pushed through it got really good
Meh.
Stick with it. I find it slow as well but really enjoyed the ending!
It was the same way for me, but do stay with it. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
Yes!!
Yasss!!! It’s really good
I didn’t love or dislike the book, and despite that I’m glad I read it. I would hang in there.
I’m like that with where’d ya go bernadette!
Honestly, I think if I’d read it I wouldn’t love it but I’m listening to the audiobook and I’m so in love. I’ve laughed out loud and cried and I just feel gut wrenched at the point I’m at in the book. It gets very very good.
Turning off tv to dig back in. Y’all motivated me!!! ?
Gave up 100 pages in ?
Keep reading. It gets so much better.
Yes it does.
I didn’t like it
Loved Eleanor!!
I was not someone who enjoyed it like many here. But, it does get better. I went from hating it to being ‘meh’. I never understood people who found it funny (I found it very sad). Somehow, I am still glad I read it.
It does
Yes!
Yes. I thought about quitting too. She’s not a great character to read. But stick it out. Really
Yes…only because I did. Lol..it helps to picture her as Amy Farrafowler from Big Bang.
yeah!
Yes
I hated it at the beginning and even stopped it for a few weeks, but when I picked it back up and got so far I couldn’t put it down. I ended up falling in love with the two main characters and rooting for them more than I have characters in any other book I’ve read lately. One thing that put me off in the beginning was that she reminded me a lot of this girl who I once worked with and couldn’t stand, but once I got to know more about her backstory, I felt like I understood her more.
It gets better. Worth the read.
You won’t be disappointed.
I asked the same a few weeks ago, and was in around the same spot. These kind readers encouraged me to keep going and I am glad I did.
I was not impressed
Not impressed either
Yes, yes, yes!! I wasn’t sure at the very beginning either, but I ended up loving her and the book!!
I didn’t like it and stopped half way through. May have been the first book I ever stopped reading!
