Emma
Pride and Prejudice or Northanger Abbey
Sense and sensibility
Pride and Prejudice of course!
Is there one that you have not seen a film or tv show of? If there is I would start with that, then you won’t have any preconceived expectations.
PRIDE AND PREJEUDICE to start with, since it’s generally the most sparkly of her books and contains the most action + movement.
Her best works are EMMA, MANSFIELD PARK and PERSUASION, but you really see the difference in quality only after having read the others first.
PERSUASION is a personal favourite. It is also her most modern work and with the most intimate character sketch of them all. I say keep this one for last.
NORTHANGER ABBEY is her silliest work, more of an afterthought. First half in Bath is decent, but the second half with the Gothic parody is tedious. A juvenile novel.
And I hope you’re liking DUNE!
Persuasion is my favorite
Northanger Abbey
Dune is awesome!
You can’t go wrong with Pride and Prejudice. But it would look pale in size and scope next to Dune to be honest
After Dune, no Austen is gonna thrill you :). I’ll start with Pride and Prejudice and keep the best ones for later.
I like Sense and Sensibility best.
@Nichole Going from Dune (Science Fiction) to Jane Austen (Historical/social commentary/Classic Regency Novel) is a bit of a leap…..in the right direction ? It may take you a few chapters to settle into it, let us know how you go. Love you name, is it after the Japanese Cherry Blossoms?
@Sandra your the first person to notice that it’s a nickname my real name is Nicole and cherry blossoms is my fravorite scent thanks for noticing
Sense and sensibility is my favourite but read her last novel the watsons
Her first attempt at a Novel, Lady Susan, is so very different from her other work it is worth reading as a contrast.
I think that you should choose which one on your own. Perhaps peruse the titles and summaries, and then choose the one that sticks out to you! The first novel you read by her is going to be special, so make it count! 🙂
I read them in the order that they were published, so started with Sense & Sensibility & ended with Persuasion.
I would recommend Pride and Prejudice to get you started! I don’t think I’d start with Sense and Sensibilty; at least in my opinion, while it’s good, it isn’t at all her best work.
