Short easy read but good and lighthearted
The Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella is a good for a laugh.
I disliked it immensely. All his books. They portray Islaam in a very nasty way.
Isn’t the Author from Afghanistan? For me it wasn’t a negative or positive portrayal of Islam as much as a story placed in a particularly nasty time on that countries history. I’ve never ready anything else by him. Also I don’t think I will. Heartbreaking tragedy isn’t typically my cup of tea.
I would say Islaam is universal for those who choose to follow it. So even if he’s from Afghanistan, the Islaamic rulings are the same. If Islaam was as he portrayed it, people wouldn’t be Muslims anymore, let alone still joining them.
And yes same here – sad books are not my cup of tea either. I did give him another chance, and read the second book (1000 splendid suns), but it felt the same as the first.
It’s nice of you to think that way about the setting and place of the book, but I’ve met people who feel that book is universal in terms of its followers.
It reminded me of the Handmaid’s Tail. That same hopeless feeling. Also reminded me of The Red Tent. I guess I don’t think this characterization is really about the religions of Islam as must as a reality that women have faced in countless cultures and times in history. The prevailing ideology is typically the tool used to oppress women as opposed to the reason for the oppression.
I kept thinking how easily this horrible reality could happen here or anywhere. Truly a nightmare. Which is which I’m ready for something fluffy and fun. 🙂
I haven’t read those. Perhaps I need to broaden my scope of reading. I understand what you’re saying now.
They are both great. And not this same level of heat break or tragedy as this story was. Plus a Handmaid’s Tail is beautifully written. Worth it just to read her writing.
As for a light book, it’s an old one, but no book made me laugh like this one did:
Summer of the Monkeys, by Wilson Rawls.
Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons
Anything by Sophie Kinsella or Lindsey Kelk
Funny in Farsi
