For me, nothing beats Dickens, Hardy, Tolstoy, Hugo and Dostoevsky. Some would say they are old school, but, for me, their works are timeless…and most of them at the extreme of emotional spectrum between heartwarming and heartwrenching.
Any specifics?
I thought these books were great too Roy. Have you read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak or Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom?
oh these two are awesome @Alison! @Roy you really should give these a shot if you haven’t already
and I would add The boy in The Striped Pajamas by John Boyne
I have read them. Also the boy in the striped pajamas…
Yes. And i have loved them both extremely.
You will like, And the mountains echoed, a strangeness in my mind. Both are beautiful books just like the two you have mentioned in your post. The Age of Shiva is also a good one. Happy reading!
@Tanya the former one i have read, the rest I haven’t. Thanks, I’ll give them a try…
You might try one of Fredrik Backman’s books: A Man Called Ove – My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry. Very heartwarming.
@Mike yeah i have been eyeing a man called ove for a while, thanks.
Khaled Hosseini has a new book-saw it in Waterstones; can’t remember the name though; I think it’s something to do with a sea voyage. I picked it up, but it had just come out at the time; so I thought I’d wait for a few months, when it would be cheaper.
@Marija sea prayer and i have read that, beautiful story but it’s more of a picture book not your usual novel.
Oh, I see. I only kinda went thru the blurb.. had the kids with me at the time.
@Marija no worries
“The Boys in The Boat” by Daniel James Brown; “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom and “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. All 3 were amazing.
@Jennifer ok thanks. I’ll get started on these then. All the light we cannot see is already in my tbr list.
I haven’t read the books you mentioned, but I absolutely loved The white steamboat by Chingiz Aitmatov, it’s heartbreaking, but it really touched me. The same goes for Victoria by Knut Hamsun ❤️
@Helga thanks, I’ll give them a try.
Hi @Roy Khalid Hosseini is a gem. I would suggest When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. Also, Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra.
@Sneha thanks
