Listening to Lincoln in the Bardo is an amazing experience. Nearly 200 voice actors, including a lot of voices you will recognize. It was like listening to a Broadway production.
Oh it’s difficult to give you any piece of advice without knowing what you like… You may want to buy 6 different genres or pick the books according to the reader ?
Ok-dial back the glowing review a bit. Last 2-3 chapters are very disappointing. Like a bad romance novel-yuck. Not believable, too clean and easy—ugh so many authors take this lazy, how-do-I-wrap-this-up FAST approach. The rest was interesting tho. Just skip the end ?
Twist me the complete trilogy is on there. I was in your same spot a while back and looked for the longest books to get as much as I could with my free credits. Tried this one and was happily surprised. It’s dark, but interesting.
The audio play about Francis of Assisi is a treat. Different actors. It feels like a classic radio program. I’ll get you the full title if you want it.
Grantchester Mysteries by James Runcie. 6 books in the set. A Vicar Sydney Chambers playing at being a detective. A great read and it was also good series on PBS.
Before audiobooks existed I purchased his autobiographical books read by himself on cd (Moab is my washpot is the first volume)… It is quite brilliant… His “partner in comedy” Hugh Laurie (better known to some as Dr House) also read classics (I purchased the cd of his reading of Great Expectations…) : just as great! ?
Born a Crime by Trevor Noah and My Life in Parts by Bryan Cranston for memoirs. Both narrated by the authors and both excellent regardless of whether you’re a fan of them. I just listened to All Quiet on the Western Front, narrated by Frank Muller. One of the best fiction performances I’ve listened to. Brought the words to life like poetry — considering that this book is translated to English, it’s especially impressive.
Don’t know your genre, but I always recommend these two books when asked about audible. The Gold Coast and it’s sequel , The Gate House by Nelson DeMille. Read by Christian Rummel. The stories are great, the narrator is perfection.
Neil Gaiman narrates any of the books he writes, and he is a PHENOMENAL voice narrator. I say go for a Neil Gaiman book. Especially one you are hesitant to read yourself. He brings them to life.
I want to buy A Rage in Harlem because it’s narrated by Samuel L. Jackson who I think would be an amazing narrator. Unfortunately that audible book is not available in Canada for some reason.
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (fantasy, great voices), We Are Legion: We Are Bob by Dennis E. Taylor (space sci fi), and The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat by Oliver Sacks (non-fiction, psychology)
I listen to a lot of audiobooks. Here are some of my recent favorites: Elinor Oliphant is completely fine; Americanah; The Heart’s Invisible Furies; Born a Crime by Trevor Noah; Dreamland by Sam Quinones(non-fiction);Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. Lincoln in the Bardo was terrific on audio but I read along with the kindle edition which helped a lot to track. Although I only read A Gentleman in Moscow, I would have loved listening to it, I’m sure.
I honestly liked the experience of physically reading Americanah over listening to it, but its so wonderful that it needs to get read one way or another!
Lonesome Dove read by Will Patton, Handmaid’s Tale read by Claire Danes, Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlings series, Before We Were Yours, Killers of the Flower Moon, World War Z, The Revenant, The Blood of Emmett Till…
