I like this too. I feel like the book goes faster. I even had a student comment about how he likes short chapters and we had a very interesting conversation about books start from that.
Not alone! I love short chapters too! It makes it easy to stop reading when you want to. I hate trying to find an endpoint when I am drowsing off and need to go to bed!
I MUCH prefer short chapters to long. Not only does it make the book go by faster in my opinion I love being able to stop a book at a chapter rather than having to either stop in the middle of a chapter or read 40 more pages to get to the next one!
I’m also finding I can read large printer books faster, too (I keep wanting books that have several holds on them from the library, yet the large print editions are available – works for me!).
I do too! Mainly because I read by chapters, meaning, I stop reading after I finish some chapters. I don’t like to put down the book in the middle of nowhere in the story, lol
I do too 1) I feel like I read more/faster 2) I read by chapters 3) I like to set goals on how much I read and it’s much easier this way 4) I feel like I accomplished way more than I actually did, like “I read 15 chapters today!”
I like The Road. It has no chapters, just white space between paragraphs! Great way to read a story which is repetitive and has few major characters or dramas. In fact this is one of my favourite books.
I have to be honest and say no,I don’t like short chapters. I feel it’s an interruption in my read.Too quickly if you know what I mean.Ok I’m probably weird ??
Like most styles, it depends on who’s using it. I love Kurt Vonneguts whimsical yet pithy use of it in books like Cats Cradle but, after the novelty of American Tabloid wore off, wish James Leroy hadn’t kept the minimalist approach for the sequels.
I like short chapters too. That is one good thing about James Patterson and Mary Higgins Clark books. They both have short chapters. I am reading The Girl in the Spider’s Web now and the chapters are 12-15 pages (24-30 sides) long! Ugh! At least there are breaks in the chapters.
It’s a growing trend brought on by the internet that breeds shorter attention spans and less ability to focus/concentrate for longer periods, so you are part of a fast growing number of people.
I’m 40 and have enjoyed shorter chapters since I started reading. I didn’t have internet until I was 18! I just prefer shorter chapters.. nothing made me that way.
I like short chapters. But I especially like a chapter that ends well…one that doesn’t leave me wondering why the author ended it there. I will literally spend the next few pages trying to figure out why the author made that choice. Weird of me, I know.
Me too!! Makes me feel like a speed reader. ?
Me too!! ?
I like this too. I feel like the book goes faster. I even had a student comment about how he likes short chapters and we had a very interesting conversation about books start from that.
Nope. Love James Patterson and M.J Arlidge just for that reason
I dont like overly long chapters. Is that the same thing?
I’m there with you
me too. dean koontz books are usually short chapers.jackie collins r2
I love short chapters, for the reason if I need to stop I can do it at a chapter. Not in the middle of a chapter.
Nope, I love short chapters
I don’t mind long or short chapters, either way, unless, I have to use the restroom or I am falling asleep then I prefer to be on a short one.
Leslie, if you enjoy short chapters, you might like “Salem Burning”.
I love short chapters!
I prefer short chapters as well. Seems like I can get through a book faster that way as opposed to getting bogged down in a long chapter
Me too ??♀️
A book is a book is a book–short chapters are just the writer’s whim, and can result in fulfilling reading experiences.
Not alone! I love short chapters too! It makes it easy to stop reading when you want to. I hate trying to find an endpoint when I am drowsing off and need to go to bed!
I wish i could find some good books with short chapters . any suggestions
“Tuesdays With Morrie,” Mitch Albom–beautiful, though not especially lengthy, book.
@Marc thanks
Peter James
I prefer shorter chapters, too.
I MUCH prefer short chapters to long. Not only does it make the book go by faster in my opinion I love being able to stop a book at a chapter rather than having to either stop in the middle of a chapter or read 40 more pages to get to the next one!
It’s one of the things I look at when I’m choosing the next book to read.
James Patterson is the King of short chapters
I know I prefer writing shorter chapters. I never paid attention to length when I read a lot, but some authors love to drag chapters on.
Me too
I’m also finding I can read large printer books faster, too (I keep wanting books that have several holds on them from the library, yet the large print editions are available – works for me!).
I do, if a chapters too long, I look when it will end
Me too. Makes it easier to pick up the books for short periods of time like a lunch break
Try some Peter James novels, they have very short chapters, if you like crime fiction.
I do too
Me too.
One of the reasons why I love James Patterson.
Yes absolutely. Even in a great book long chapters will decrease how much I enjoy it
Me too. Theres a lot of times I only get to sit down for 10 or 15 minutes, so the short chapters are great
Nope.
What do you consider short chapters, like 20 pages? Or less?
It’s so crazy you say this, because I was JUST thinking that while I read The Line That Held Us
Me too
Me to.
Me too!!
I never pay attention to chapters in a story if its good I never want it to end.
Nope! It was one of the first things I enjoyed about James Patterson.
You are not alone…
I prefer short chapters because my reading is frequently interrupted. It makes it easier pick up again
I like them too.
You might like to take a look at my book. ? https://books.friesenpress.com/store/title/119734000030241047/Danielle-Gallant-Simms-Living-Past-Being-a-Victim
I prefer books with short chapters, it makes me feel like I’m reading faster than what i am.
I do too

I like chapter length to vary. But 30 page chapters for example… No thanks ?
Short chapters are great. It’s something that is often done purposely to keep readers hooked and turning pages.
nope
No
No
Absolutely me too!
I like them with long chapters so I feel like I’m reaching a mile stone as I read but idk maybe I’m weird
no Leslie, James Patterson has short chapters..i hate too long a chapters.
Hello friend?
depends upon the book/writer’s style, but i do like short chapters.
James Patterson short chapters annoy me when I’m sitting at the beach & have to turn pages so quickly. Not so annoying on a kindle.
Short chapters ?
What Nobody Knew
I love short chapters for a stopping place! I always feel I should stop at the end of a chapter!
No
Yes, that allows the reader to plan stops easily.
I scan through a book prior to purchasing it just to see if the chapters are short ? If they’re too long, I put it back on the shelf.
I like The Road. It has no chapters, just white space between paragraphs! Great way to read a story which is repetitive and has few major characters or dramas. In fact this is one of my favourite books.

I agree with you!
It doesn’t really matter to ke as long as its a good story
Me not ke

Same for me. I like my mini breaks in-between.
No, short chapters make me think I’m advancing through the book faster.
There’s a boom I read when I was younger called Pop Goes The Weasel. The chapters were, at most 3-4 pages.
Myself as well ..
I prefer short chapters, but long ones won’t discourage me if it’s a good book.

no
I also like books w/ short chapters. I even wrote one! 😉
I like short chapters. But I especially like a chapter that ends well…one that doesn’t leave me wondering why the author ended it there. I will literally spend the next few pages trying to figure out why the author made that choice. Weird of me, I know.
Short? How short are we talking here? I like it to be like under 20 pages
can’t stand the newer trend of short chapters. a book that has 60 chaps at 3 pages each is weird to (me)
nope! Along with that, I dislike books that don’t have chapters. Grrr.
Nope. I agree
Nope I agree, Drive by James Sallasis writes in short chapters and it keeps the flow going so well.
I prefer short chapters too.
I like that I feel like I am getting things accomplished with short chapters
