It was good. It’s a tough book, but excellent and hard to put down. I Googled the real “rabbits” after I finished and it was truly heartbreaking to see it all up close like that.
It was a great book but not what I would call “enjoyable “. I couldn’t put it down and have recommended it many times. I have always been interested in WWII and love to learn more with each book I read.
Definitely a difficult book in terms of the subject matter, but I thought it was very well written. It’s a great example of using facts to create a compelling story — and I particularly liked the author’s disclaimer that one character was indeed fictional, but based upon experiences described by some of the actual “rabbits”. Don’t miss the epilogue where the author describes her inspiration for the novel.
Yes! Liked it a lot! Gave a different look than the usual of that same genre.

I also grew up in the same part of CT that is spoken of in the book and I did a little outside research. I feel like my Nana, who was lead housekeeper for a very prominent family in Litchfield, CT may have even met Ferriday. Wish I could ask her
@Greta I spent every summer of my life in NewPreston. If you know of any other books where the setting is that part of the country, could you please share info. I love and miss that area so much!
It was a good but tough read. I want to go to the museum in Connecticut when I’m back up there. It’s a small thing but I was confused by the cover choice – the book focuses on the lives of 3 individuals so (trying not to give anything away), based on the cover, I thought the story would go a different way – again small detail
Loved the book!!! She has a new one coming out soon….. Lost Roses The runaway bestseller Lilac Girls introduced the real-life heroine Caroline Ferriday. This sweeping new novel, set a generation earlier and also inspired by true events, features Caroline’s mother, Eliza, and follows three equally indomitable women from St. Petersburg to Paris under the shadow of World War I.
It is 1914 and the world has been on the brink of war so many times, many New Yorker’s treat the subject with only passing interest. Eliza Ferriday is thrilled to be traveling to St. Petersburg with Sofya Streshnayva, a cousin of the Romanov’s. The two met years ago one summer in Paris and became close confidantes. Now Eliza embarks on the trip of a lifetime, home with Sofya to see the splendors of Russia. But when Austria declares war on Serbia and Russia’s Imperial dynasty begins to fall, Eliza escapes back to America, while Sofya and her family flee to their country estate. In need of domestic help, they hire the local fortuneteller’s daughter, Varinka, unknowingly bringing intense danger into their household. On the other side of the Atlantic, Eliza is doing her part to help the White Russian families find safety as they escape the revolution. But when Sofya’s letters suddenly stop coming she fears the worst for her best friend.
From the turbulent streets of St. Petersburg to the avenues of Paris and the society of fallen Russian emigre’s who live there, the lives of Eliza, Sofya, and Varinka will intersect in profound ways, taking readers on a breathtaking ride through a momentous time in history.
