@Caitlin I hate movie covers on books. I read eBooks now and it makes me so mad that they auto update to the movie cover. All the Outlander books are doing it, one by one as a new season of the show comes out. Burns me up.
I love good covers, always wanted to be a cover illustrator for books and albums back in the day. I will buy the book for a great cover even if I never read the story. I even own a book about book covers lol.
The covers and spines are what draw my attention but I ALWAYS read the blurb before buying. I tend to read horrors, thrillers, crime fiction etc. So basically anything dark hahahaha and luckily the covers do usually match by being darker in colour themselves
Last time I did that I was severely disappointed by the book. It was The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton, and it just was not what I thought it was going to be.
When a cover grabs my attention, I read the 1st paragraph to help me determine if the book should go home with me. If the 1st paragraph does not capture my attention, the book returns to the shelf.
The moment it looks a bit insipid, I will gloss over. If it has the White House on the cover, its likely to be another Arab against America spy/save the world/yawn novel (and thats nothing against Americans, its just the abuse of the subject matter), fantasy type covers (logically, its not my choice of genre)
I think the cover and spine, but especially the title is what first draws my attention to a physical book. Then I read the blurb on then back or inside jacket. Some covers immediately grab me and others not so much… an ugly cover wouldn’t prevent me from reading a book— just make it less likely i would pick it up on my own to begin with.
The cover definitely matters because it is what grabs my attention. It’s the first impression, the first thing you see. But I do read the blurb and make my decision from there
Meeee! I dont bother to read whats inside if the cover doesnt catch my eyes
I do lol I don’t usually read the back either but I look it up on here too
At times, and thickness?
Me. Covers with actual photographs are usually a turn off.
@Lauren even if it’s a really good picture?
it really depends, and of what the picture is.
@Lauren ah ok ?
Never. I only read Ebooks though so there aren’t traditional covers.
I mostly do read the back of the text and jeah if some book cover is extremely inappropriate it might affect my choice
I only judge when a book is clearly mistreated. 🙂
Hahaha I do sometimes but also the font size, the smaller it is the better, I’m more on quantity of the content ?
Everyone. Yes. Everyone.
I don’t get books with photographs of models. Makes me cringe. Don’t know why.
Oh oh or the movie covers. Yuck.
@Caitlin I hate movie covers on books. I read eBooks now and it makes me so mad that they auto update to the movie cover. All the Outlander books are doing it, one by one as a new season of the show comes out. Burns me up.
I don’t always judge it necessarily by the cover, but I have been drawn to or put off by the cover.
Not me
Sometimes
I do fairly well but I read the description and reviews too and they usually tell me what I need to know
Nope I’m a Blurb reader I own signed books that the cover don’t appeal to me but the Blurb did
Never
By the title. I judge a book by the title
Most of the time.
No
Reading the first 8-10 pages either sparks my interest or not.
Only if it is Stephen King. Then I buy it because it is him.
Would you buy it if the cover was crap?
I would. Elevation has a crap cover, but I pre-ordered that the day it was announced.
@Chris So like me you are a King fan…I own everything he has released
Yes, yes I am. I have all of the books and I am only missing the 2009 Children of the Corn and Mr. Mercedes Season 1.
Like Firestarter…Charlie McGee
@Chris I am not a whacko but if you want a invite let me know…
I would love an invite 🙂
@Chris cool I will arrange it….
@Chris Accept my friend request..you can unfriend after …
I already like you lol
You are a King fan, so you are a friend of mine
@Chris ok you should hear from them soon, give me a nod when you get in…
Not by cover alone, but I think it’s safe to say that we all are impacted in some way by the quality of cover art, and what it depicts.
I love good covers, always wanted to be a cover illustrator for books and albums back in the day. I will buy the book for a great cover even if I never read the story. I even own a book about book covers lol.
Not really I read the blurb and pick it from that
Not usually.
Never alone! But I do let myself be attracted to covers, and if that happens I read the blurb/back and decide then
The covers and spines are what draw my attention but I ALWAYS read the blurb before buying. I tend to read horrors, thrillers, crime fiction etc. So basically anything dark hahahaha and luckily the covers do usually match by being darker in colour themselves
The back cover where the blurb is, yes. lol
I do but i normally read the back..then decide..
No way!!!!
Nope
Guilty ?
I do
I’ll admit I do. The cover is what catches my attention enough to at least see what the book is about.
Guilty!!
Sometimes I do.
Not all the time.
If I don’t like the cover I usually won’t buy it
The cover will get me to pick up the book, but not to check out or purchase
Probably not judge but a good or interesting cover can certainly suck one in…the read says it all
Cover and title ?
I do
Never. I read the back, then the first few pages.
I NEVER DID. ?
Sometimes
Me
I judge by the title, although I 10/10 picked up my last book because the cover looked good.
All the time.
I try to avoid but I always do ?
Me too
Me…. sometimes ??♀️
All the time!! And I’m right 99% of the time!!!
A good cover catches your attention.
Not the cover alone. It may catch my eye, but then I usually check out the title and blurb to see if it’s something I’d like to read.
No. I read the blurb. Some covers look awesome but the books sometimes fall short of my expectations.
Got to read the blurb….
Wait, now that I think about it, it is true that some covers will put me OFF immediately.
Like what?
The moment it looks a bit insipid, I will gloss over. If it has the White House on the cover, its likely to be another Arab against America spy/save the world/yawn novel (and thats nothing against Americans, its just the abuse of the subject matter), fantasy type covers (logically, its not my choice of genre)
Oh, oh… I get it.
I do like the feel of those that have that faux suede covers.
It does happen…
Sometimes. I look for a title and a cover that catches my eye
Cover will attract my attention then I read the blurb…..
Anyone need a kick ass cover let me know. ?
I do.
@Renee pm me. Id be happy to take a look. I can send examples of previous work. All original designs bespoke and copyrighted images used. ?
@Rita sorry. I meant I judge books by their cover ?
I think the cover and spine, but especially the title is what first draws my attention to a physical book. Then I read the blurb on then back or inside jacket. Some covers immediately grab me and others not so much… an ugly cover wouldn’t prevent me from reading a book— just make it less likely i would pick it up on my own to begin with.
@Jamie exactly the same for me
Always ?
yes
Both the cover and the blurb on the back……
No
It’s happened on occasion
The cover definitely matters because it is what grabs my attention. It’s the first impression, the first thing you see. But I do read the blurb and make my decision from there
Never ….im always curious to check whats in there …first few pages
Sometimes. Some covers really speak to you. In another life I would like to be a book cover artist.
Never alone. Sometimes it will be the reason I pick up a book but I always read a bit.
Not just by the cover, but I am a sucker for a pretty face.
Guilty! The cover and the title first grabs my attention. Then i read the blurb. ?
Never ever
When I wrote a book column in university I wrote this: https://bit.ly/BookCover1
Let’s just say, I have a surprising amount of books with blue/greenish blue covers…
