Browsers is a gem ? ! It’s on Capitol Way N, only a 7-min walk from Orca Books. It’s been in business over 80 years and has always been owned by women. Well-curated used & new titles, charming space and looks like a great slate of book clubs. I’m envious I don’t live closer!!! ?
100. I will probably read 25. Having a new baby plus my toddler makes reading hard. Also, smart phone addiction acquired after first kid was born doesn’t help either.
This year I had aimed for 50 but had so many things on my plate I only managed about 24. For 2018, I’d like to try for the 50 but if I don’t reach it, it’s fine. I just hope the books I read are great.
This is why a number of books doesn’t really work as a target when some people like quick light reads & some prefer longer more complex books that it’s impossible to read at speed! I wouldn’t choose to only read short books just to reach a target
I have a mix, shortest read this year was 91 pages, the longest was 600+. On average the books I pick are between 300-400 pages. I have t gotten into epics, as I’m a fairly new reader.
i don’t care what number I read, so long as I enjoy them. What is this thing with reading a certain number of books? What is the point of reading by numbers?
Louise, for me personally, setting a very loose goal this year has reminded me to make time for my love of reading. In 2016, I read 8 books all year. This year, I set myself a rough goal of one book per fortnight and it looks like I will finish the year having read 23 or 24. I buy far more books than I am ever going to read in a year and I also follow a number of authors and book-related pages, including online book clubs, so I am constantly hearing about books that I want to read. I’ve found that my approach this year has helped me to feel more organised in choosing which book club choices I want to read, which new releases I want to buy etc. Previously, it was too easy to put reading on the backburner, as much as I love it.
I’m with you @Louise, if I find one book that I love and it is four hundred thousand pages long then I will read one book this year but the idea that people are sprinting through literature is pointless and is surely against the actual point of reading in the first place ? All of this is of course in my own opinion which is no more, or less, valid than any others 🙂
I feel the same as Allison ! It’s not about meeting or exceeding a goal, rather a reminder. I’ve read more books this year than I have in my entire life, simply because I set an achievable goal of 10. I finished the year with 20 completed books so far.
I’ve read 20 this year and I think that’s achievable again, it’s not always about the volume though – some books I’ve read are huge so if I’d chosen to I could’ve read loads more in the same time but it’s not a competition & quicker books don’t tend to appeal a short much, each to their own 🙂
Between 100 and 300 books. It depend if also comics and manga will be part of my books. But this year my goodreads showed almost 400 books (with manga and comics). ?
Last year I wanted to read double what I read the year before – i.e. 202, and I read 203. This year I wanted to read at least one more than last year, and I’ve read 205 to date. I am not sure about setting a tragedy this year. I think I got overly caught up in challenges and numbers the last few years.
My target is 50. But I’m not going to steal my joy by driving to that goal. Recently I’ve read several YA novels. Easy way to get numbers up but I also like historical fiction which often does the opposite.
24. I shoot for two/month. Some months I am able to read four, some months I only read one. I love literature and nonfiction books that educate and uplift me.
My goal on Goodreads this past year was 75 and I read 180 books (this includes graphic novels, middle grades, poetry, audible, etc) For 2018 I’ve decided to concentrate on the 500+ page books I have on my shelves, so I’ll probably set my goal for 50.
As many as possible. Last year was a barren year, only read IT. Then discovered Murakami and am back on the reading rails. Done Norwegian wood, now on Kafka and its mind blowing.
Last year my goal was 60, finishing up number 78 today (I hope). Plan to set next year’s goal at 75. Lot’s of changes in my life that I think will mean more time to read.
At this point I’d settle for 10. This year I accomplished 15 but I was so super busy and life was so damn dramatic. 2018 better have significantly less drama.
I don’t put a target … i read whenever I can because i love reading … if there is something I’m worried about it would be work…especially toward the end of the novel when u become so involved and so in love with the characters ? Sometimes i arrive to work late because when i wake up i love to drink a cup of coffee with a piece of cake or chocolate and my novel and i forget myself
I read around 30 this year but I’m a student so I spend a large amount of time with my nose in academic books. So I’m going to just add 5 onto this years and keep track better.
Will do 25 again. I’m currently at 24 for this year and 364/910 pages (40%) in to The Bully Pulpit. :p That, and a few other long ones keeps my number low.
Question for you all … are you all incredible speed readers? I find if I can read between 12 to 20 per year that’s about all I can squeeze in what with work and all!
I’m definitely not a speed reader. I have a full time job, volunteer quite a bit, have 2 toddler boys and a husband. I read about 30-50 books a year by reading at least an hour a night. That is my “me” time. ? I wish I could read more but this works for me ?
Not a speed reader but I carry a book with me always. I read every opportunity I get, waiting at the doctors, waiting at dance, riding in the car (when I can get someone else to drive), and I don’t watch t.v. I can usually get through about 5 books a month.
When I lived in NYC I had a lot more reading time on the subway, waiting for a bus or train, etc. — always carried a book. Here in southern California I spend too much time in the car! I have listened to audiobooks though, which doesn’t really count as reading!
@Frank I do count it as reading. I spend a lot of time cooking. Listening to books on tape/cd keeps me going. My family knows to hit pause before they speak to me 🙂
Thanks @Monica. I think I’ll set 2 goals. 1 goal for flipping the pages kind of reading, and 1 for audio books. I drive down to San Diego from Palm Springs every Monday, and back every Thursday, so that’s about 5 hours of driving/audio-book time I can get in every week.
@Monica yes, I tend to do all NPR in the car too. On Fridays I usually do 100 miles round trip for another 2 hours or so of car/audio time. I find the news so depressing some days that perhaps audio-book time would be better!
I read during my bus commute to and from work and have been able to read 20 books this year, on top of working full time and being a mom. I was wasting too much time on social media. I’m not sure I could ever be that person who can reads 100s in a year. Maybe when I’m retired.
Lol, only in the last few years have I been able to do this. My kids are older and I have more time to binge read late at night and on weekends. Also, I’m a teacher so I read quite a bit during the summer. My library card has frequent flier miles!
My goal this year is not a number, but to tackle some of the big books I’ve been wanting to read. War and Peace, Infinite Jest, A Little Life, In Search of Lost Time, etc. Those are FAT books so I may only read 5 books the whole year, but they’re the equivalent of 20 regular books ?
I just joined good reads and it will be my first year setting and goal as well as keeping track. My goal is 24 books. 2 a month. I like to set goals that I can achieve. You can always add to your goal or increase it.
Thanks all for the genuine responses. It’s interesting to see what other people’s goals are. With regard to the criticism of goal planning, if you aren’t a fan, then move on. There’s no need to be critical of someone else’s habits that don’t directly affect you. Happy reading! ??
Also I got a reading journal for my birthday in the summer but didn’t want to start half way through the year so I plan to properly reflect on each book once I’ve read it before starting the next one, so I don’t forget bits of information. This goal will probably impact on my overall number of books read but it will increase my number of books appreciated
I’ve read as much as 100 in a very intentional reading year. This year, I was busy with school and had to read a lot for that (and included those books, lol) but I still didn’t meet my Goodreads goal of 50, I think I’m going to end up at 37, maybe 38 if I finish the one I’m reading. So I am going to shoot for 50 again, and hopefully, I will surpass it.
My daughter started nursery school this year and they send out Scholastic Book Club flyers every month. I spend an average of $2 per book and I set aside $40 per month for it. When you read so many books a day to your kids, having a large library is essential.
My personal best is 153. But that was a year when I was mostly laid up. My average hovers around 100, and I will keep that as a soft goal. I am more concerned with diversifying my choices these days than maximizing my numbers.
My personal best is 140, this year I read 122, but I always set my goal at 100. That is a book every 3 1/2 days or so. I don’t want to stress about reaching a goal.
The last few years I have read150-165 books per year. This year was a reading slump year, will end at 65 books. Have read some great books and am getting my book thrive back. Despite my low reading average ( one month I recorded 1 book,an audio one!!!) Keep up with my reading journal. Did not beat myself up just rode it out. My goal for 2018 is100 books if I reach it great, if not that’s great too. My love of books and enjoyments of reading is.my real goal.
I’m aiming to read more of the books that I physically own so I can gift or donate them. #Downsizing That being said my conservative goal is 40. Last year’s goal of 36 was surpassed.
Not setting a goal for 2018. Set a goal of 80 for 2017 and was on track to make it until I read Room by Emma Donahue right before Thanksgiving. Hated the child narrator. The book completely put me off reading. I’m finishing 2017 with 74 books. So, no goal for 2018. I will just read what I want when I want.
Exactly! I figure I did well reading what I did this year since I work full time and was President of the Board of my son’s high school’s charity. Stepping down on the 23rd so maybe I’ll be able to get through more!
Statistically Speaking I should be able to read 121 books, but I will be pleased if I read 60. So far my 2018 reading list is only 39 books deep and I have been reading from it this week.
I haven’t decided yet – somewhere between 30 and 50 ….. I’m not really a fast reader either, however I managed to meet and surpass my 2017 goal of 27 books (I read 37 – and in process of trying to finish 1 more before NYE).
That would mean I was making myself get out and be social not just hiding in my house reading every night.
That would be a very light year for me but I need to get out more. One per week would mean reading before bed instead of reading in place of a normal social life.
I shoot for at least 100 pages per day. Plus, I’m a lit professor, so reading is about half of my job. Much of the reading is for research, so it’s other criticism, history, biographies, etc., but I’m trying to get more fun reading in there too.
55!
(current total this year is 52/55. so close yet so far.)
Random side note: I’m in Olympia!
I’m in Olympia!!!
I visited Olympia (from Seattle) yesterday just to visit some of your bookshops – Browsers, Last Words & Orca Books. Fabulous book town!!! ??
@Deanna omg I didn’t even know these existed ????
We’ve only been here a year.
@Deanna omg I didn’t even know these existed ????
We’ve only been here a year.
I’ve known of the last two but where is browsers?
Browsers is a gem ? ! It’s on Capitol Way N, only a 7-min walk from Orca Books. It’s been in business over 80 years and has always been owned by women. Well-curated used & new titles, charming space and looks like a great slate of book clubs. I’m envious I don’t live closer!!! ?
I’m shooting for 50.
243,685,543,876 more than last year
As many as want to. ?
24
100. I will probably read 25. Having a new baby plus my toddler makes reading hard. Also, smart phone addiction acquired after first kid was born doesn’t help either.
Congratulations on the baby!!! ???
You should do audiobooks! If the little ones like to hear play them out loud and if not use ear buds.
Play them on the smart phone and maybe that will give you your smart phone fix at the same time ?
I did that with my last. It was awesome!
52
This year I had aimed for 50 but had so many things on my plate I only managed about 24. For 2018, I’d like to try for the 50 but if I don’t reach it, it’s fine. I just hope the books I read are great.

I am shooting for 52

Achievable goal: 1 book per month, but would love to read more ?

50 is always my goal. I usually read over 60, but I like to be able to read a couple of door-stoppers and still reach my target.
This is why a number of books doesn’t really work as a target when some people like quick light reads & some prefer longer more complex books that it’s impossible to read at speed! I wouldn’t choose to only read short books just to reach a target

100 maybe 🙂 but according to my reading its about 5 books a month 🙂
55 Books
I’ve read 20 this year and I think that’s achievable again, it’s not always about the volume though – some books I’ve read are huge so if I’d chosen to I could’ve read loads more in the same time but it’s not a competition & quicker books don’t tend to appeal a short much, each to their own 🙂

I am not sure about setting a tragedy this year. I think I got overly caught up in challenges and numbers the last few years.
I have been in a huge reading slump so my goal is for 12.
I tried for 52 last year but only got to 30 ? I think this year I’m going to try for 3 a month, so 36.
250
I’ll stick with my usual goal of 30 and hopefully update it as the year goes.
I read 60 books this year. so I think I will aim for 100 in 2018
100
I retired yesterday so am hopeful to read a lot more in 2018. I’ll start with a goal of 30!
Congrats!
My target is 50. But I’m not going to steal my joy by driving to that goal. Recently I’ve read several YA novels. Easy way to get numbers up but I also like historical fiction which often does the opposite.
1,000,000.
24. I shoot for two/month. Some months I am able to read four, some months I only read one. I love literature and nonfiction books that educate and uplift me.
This year I did 20, probably a few more since I forgot to put them in Goodreads. It was a busy year though. So for 2018 maybe 30?
I’m shooting for 100!
50
All of them ?
Maybe 50 books, I guess?
My goal on Goodreads this past year was 75 and I read 180 books (this includes graphic novels, middle grades, poetry, audible, etc) For 2018 I’ve decided to concentrate on the 500+ page books I have on my shelves, so I’ll probably set my goal for 50.
50-60 cause im a bit slow reader?
as many as I can get my hands on ?
As many as possible. Last year was a barren year, only read IT. Then discovered Murakami and am back on the reading rails. Done Norwegian wood, now on Kafka and its mind blowing.
207, I listed to audiobooks at work at a faster than normal speed.

Can someone send me the link in goodreads where I can submit my number for 2018? (or is it not there yet? – I’ve looked… can’t find it)
I don’t think the 2018 reading challenge will be up until Jan 1st. I’ve been looking everyday myself. Lol
I don’t know, I’d love to say 100, but I just started reading againe after a very long dry spell of not reading anything.
I aim for a book a week. So 52.
100
A modest 24! Hope to get back into audibles too.
100 hopefully!
At this point I’d settle for 10. This year I accomplished 15 but I was so super busy and life was so damn dramatic. 2018 better have significantly less drama.

Over 4 a day. Impressive.
??
Could you imagine!? #retirementgoals
All the books! But since I’m a teacher and have a three year old I will be happy with reading at least 20.
Goal this year was 50 and made it to 39 (almost finished with Chalk Man) so will be 40. Setting my goal for 60 in 2018?❤️☕️
I would like to read more than 5 but right now 5 is my goal
As many as I get to. I never set number goals, I just enjoy.
This year my goal was 20, but I’ve only gotten to 17 🙁 So 2018 will be 20 again!
at the very least – 12
As many as I want and can! Not setting a number to disappoint myself!
Doesn’t matter how much, it’s what affect and trace left what really matters

I read around 30 this year but I’m a student so I spend a large amount of time with my nose in academic books. So I’m going to just add 5 onto this years and keep track better.
Will do 25 again.
I’m currently at 24 for this year and 364/910 pages (40%) in to The Bully Pulpit. :p That, and a few other long ones keeps my number low.
I read 305 this year, I’m going to try 310
My goal was 36 this year and I have read 46 so I’m aiming for 50
My goal is 100 books. This year I read 78…. I didnt hit my goal

@Brianna that’s great. I read before bed too but usually only about 30 to 40 minutes and I’m definitely not a speed reader!
Not a speed reader but I carry a book with me always. I read every opportunity I get, waiting at the doctors, waiting at dance, riding in the car (when I can get someone else to drive), and I don’t watch t.v. I can usually get through about 5 books a month.
@Cathi I do this too ? I get a lot of reading done during my lunch at work as well
When I lived in NYC I had a lot more reading time on the subway, waiting for a bus or train, etc.
@Frank I drive about 120 miles a day (M – F). I think I might start listening in the car again as well, but lately car time has been my NPR time.

All of them!????
My goal will be 150 for 2018
wow 🙂 then you are my hero no 1
Lol, only in the last few years have I been able to do this. My kids are older and I have more time to binge read late at night and on weekends. Also, I’m a teacher so I read quite a bit during the summer. My library card has frequent flier miles!
52. My goal is 1 per week.
All of them. 😉
If only!
@Emma I know! They keep writing them faster than I can read!
Don’t they just!
I just joined good reads and it will be my first year setting and goal as well as keeping track. My goal is 24 books. 2 a month. I like to set goals that I can achieve. You can always add to your goal or increase it.
I turn 50 this year. So I’m making 50 my goal!!!!
52, one per week.
I don’t keep count.
It’s going to be 2018, so I would go for 18.
@Hitasha @Naveen @Shreya – How about you :D?
8 books ?
Sticking with 25 again.
My goal is 10, but I’d be proud of myself if i could do 20. Parenting is hard sometimes
100
How does one achieve this lol
I read constantly and I’m a fast reader, from August to December I read 55 books.
120
My goal this past year was 100 and I only hit 40, so I’m going for something more obtainable but yet challenging – 60.
At least 12.
As many as I can but not as many as I’ll want to.
Thanks all for the genuine responses. It’s interesting to see what other people’s goals are. With regard to the criticism of goal planning, if you aren’t a fan, then move on. There’s no need to be critical of someone else’s habits that don’t directly affect you. Happy reading! ??

I am going to finish 74 this year, think I will set next year’s goal for 80.
I will pledge 45 but want to go for 100. This year my pledge was 30 and read 77
30 or more. I didn’t make my 30 book goal this year.

So I am going to shoot for 50 again, and hopefully, I will surpass it.
I’ve never challenged myself before, so I’ll start at 12. If I’m averaging more than 1 book a month after a while, I’ll bump it to 20
I intend to set the same goal as this year, 250 books. I’ve exceeded it so I can do it again.
Does rereading children’s books count? If so, 1,825.
Loool. I hear ya. We get so many books each month from the library for my son. He is a book worm.
My daughter started nursery school this year and they send out Scholastic Book Club flyers every month. I spend an average of $2 per book and I set aside $40 per month for it. When you read so many books a day to your kids, having a large library is essential.
I read over 200 books this year so I think 200 is a reasonable goal again!
I would like to do 100, but realistically 50 is about right
85

15! Plus finish writing one. ⭐️?
No goal for me, I read when I want to and when I have time. That would take all the fun out of reading, we have enough goals as it is. Read to enjoy!
I totally agree. I read to relax not meet a deadline but more power to those who chose that goal.
I’m shooting for 85 again!
Targeting 36 books… 3 per month 🙂
I managed to read 40 this year, and my goal was 24. So I think I’ll aim for 30 this year. Dont want to make it too hard to do.

I’m not setting a goal this year. I have a list started on what I want to read.
My goal is not the number of books I read but the number of books I actually get to finish!
As much as possible
52
More.
I’m aiming to read more of the books that I physically own so I can gift or donate them. #Downsizing
That being said my conservative goal is 40. Last year’s goal of 36 was surpassed.
I would really like to hit 100 but I’ll probably get a little over 50.
I’m working on that!
Setting my goal at 70. See what happens
as many as i can. no pressure
I usually set it at 84 which is 7 a month but I will probably read 100+.
Do you guys have jobs? Holy smokes
Exactly! I figure I did well reading what I did this year since I work full time and was President of the Board of my son’s high school’s charity. Stepping down on the 23rd so maybe I’ll be able to get through more!
I will go for 50
20
52. One a week
Statistically Speaking I should be able to read 121 books, but I will be pleased if I read 60. So far my 2018 reading list is only 39 books deep and I have been reading from it this week.
I usually set at 200, but that also includes novellas, novelettes, and graphic novels.
Last year was 35 and I beat my goal so I’m going to try 40 this year.
At least one per month, 2017 was a rough year
Oooh thats a good idea i may try that!!

Me too
I’m not a fast reader. I’m happy with 1 per month. It took me 2 1/2 yrs to read the 8 volumes of the Outlander series.

I haven’t decided yet – somewhere between 30 and 50 …..
I’m not really a fast reader either, however I managed to meet and surpass my 2017 goal of 27 books (I read 37 – and in process of trying to finish 1 more before NYE).

36!

30
52 only
That would mean I was making myself get out and be social not just hiding in my house reading every night.
That would be a very light year for me but I need to get out more. One per week would mean reading before bed instead of reading in place of a normal social life.
45 max
80
Small goal… 12, but i only read 3 (cover to cover) last year ?

70 +

30. Some I want to read this year are very long.
I read 93 this year so maybe 95
70 was my goal in 2017 but I’m at 97 now so I think I’ll set 2018 for 85.
I’m shooting for a solid 125 this year.
What’s your strategy?
I shoot for at least 100 pages per day. Plus, I’m a lit professor, so reading is about half of my job. Much of the reading is for research, so it’s other criticism, history, biographies, etc., but I’m trying to get more fun reading in there too.

less than i will, probably, b/c i’d like to have a life outside of my books
