I just now started one that I don’t even want in my house. I got to page 60 and can’t handle any more. Someone else might like it but it is too rough for me.
I threw away a book that was from my classroom library. A student borrowed it. When it was returned the smell of cigarette smoke had permeated it. It couldn’t be saved. I cried.
I put book in bag after using baking soda throu out the book. Lots of baking soda for a week. It hard to get soda out good but saved the book. Pages feel like some soda still on pages. So not sure about this. But smell was gone.
Harlequin romance paperback given to me. 200+ pages in she’s trying to decide whether he will be most impressed by her pink sweater . . or maybe she should wear the blue one. Threw it across the room
I have. I don’t remember the title. It was a biography about a woman whose husband ended up being a rapist and murderer. It was very upsetting and I was pregnant.
While a book containing sex and kink doesn’t bother me, books that the author couldn’t be bothered to havd edited before publishing, do. Not to mention the egotistical personality of 1, and the emotional rag rug of the other, equals a rather unhealthy relationship to me.
Lol when I was in school we had this librarian who taught us to treat books like babies, with a printed baby head sticking out of the top and everything. I don’t think I would throw it away, if a book reseller wouldn’t take it, then I would probably use it for a craft! I LOVE BOOK CRAFTS! But the image of that book with the baby head is stuck in my brain and I can never bring myself to “harm” any poor defenseless books! ??
I threw away one book; I didn’t want to be responsible for anyone else being triggered like I was. I know, judgy. But a dog was killed horribly at the outset. It was disturbing.
I only throw books away when they are falling apart. Otherwise they get traded in, donated to the library or Senior center or put in the”pulp” box. There’s a collection box near the bookstore and it’s for recycling.
Used to take all my out-lived books to a place called Half Price books, they buy back books, video, etc. What they didn’t resell, they donated to various facilities and Charities. Now I donate to Goodwill, since there are none of those nearby.
No, but one day a little boy came up to me wanting to check out a book. I told him he already had a book out, so he must bring that one back. He said he could not do that and said it was in the trash! What? He said yes, I threw it away! I said I will call your mom! His mother said, Oh no! I told him to stop reading Pokémon…it is nothing but trash! He must have taken me literally! I am so sorry, and I will replace the book!
All has their artistic way of telling stories regardless how good or poor it was written… what you like, others might not, vice versa, so everyone has their own genre; so I haven’t!
In a fit of rage, I threw away a “parenting” book my mom had sent me ? and one I had bought myself. No regrets! All other books that don’t speak to me I have and will continue to donate.
How about got rid of? My mom was staying with me and she opened a cupboard and found the book “How to survive your ageing parents” She was so mad at me! Lol
I have donated books that I didn’t like, but I wouldn’t throw a book in the trash. Just because I don’t personally like something doesn’t mean that someone else won’t.
@Jennifer depending on the book level and intended audience you can give them to a local school. I do that with my YA books I dont want to keep. My librarian loves my donations!
My library has a bookstore they keep open and sell donated books. They also have a table where they put free books for anyone to pick up. Check with your local library.
No! It is not my responsibility to censor what others choose to read. If a book doesn’t suit me, I donate to a local free library or my Friends of the Library Bookstore. I could not endure throwing a book away if it is in readable condition.
Only if I have another preferably intact copy of the same after the other copy has been read to the point past physical destruction. Torn-ado effect due to my having read it overmuch.
I did throw away a book once because it reeked of drugs and the events in the book made me want to throw up. I can’t remember what it was called, but I didn’t wish that imagery on my worst enemy.
My sister, who loves reading more than anyone I’ve ever known, got so angry at a book’s ending once, she threw it in the fireplace. We still talk about that 20 years later, it was so shocking to both of us, lol.?
The Butterfly Revolution by William Butler. It was a school reading book for my son. We both agreed it was the poorest written crap ever to be forced on teens. It would start as a journal entry and suddenly be actual time. Things that were supposedly fleashbacks of memory morphed to real time as well. The kicker was the ending where something happened and the supposed culprit was not the one that the story had already placed at the scene but a new character that was never ever mentioned in the book previously. Niw, that may not be so bad except the writer then tried to have dialogue saying that the culprit had been with the kids at such and such but rereading those scenes do not include this character. Some paragraps start out as written in first oerson and then switch to thurd person which was really hard to follow. When my son was 15 he had to read it and thought ut was so poorly written he complained to the teacher and the principal.
I bought the 50 shades series bc I love erotica and so many people recommended it. I only got about half-way through the first book and tossed the entire series after that. It was awful and no one should have to read that garbage. (No offense to anyone; this is only my opinion, as an experienced BDSM participant and avid reader)
I burnt a book once for that reason
? oh dear!
Yes, twice
I shredded one once.
@Carolyn what was it and why?
Dramatic!
Yep!
Only books I studied from for school and high school. I still have the ones I used in college because I actually find them interesting.
The Strong Willed Child by Dobson
@Tiffany didn’t work? ?
Lol, no
I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away, but American Psycho.
No!
It’s not my right to decide if a book should or shouldn’t be read.
No, love books
No I respect books. I pick pages
Nope. Just because I don’t like or appreciate something doesn’t mean someone else won’t!
I just now started one that I don’t even want in my house. I got to page 60 and can’t handle any more. Someone else might like it but it is too rough for me.
I burned some real raggedy Buddhist books, which is what you’re supposed to do.

This is why I don’t read romance novels.
Cujo
I have. I don’t remember the title. It was a biography about a woman whose husband ended up being a rapist and murderer. It was very upsetting and I was pregnant.
The Witch’s Handbook. Pure evil.
I don’t throw them out. i give them away or i go to this local place where we can get credit for other books.
No…but, I think Hitler did.
I wouldn’t do that but if I was going to it would be Passages by Gail Sheehy. Daring Greatly by Brene Brown would be a close second.
No. I put it in a bookcase and let it sit there for 30 years.
Oh no it is a crime to destroy a book.
Yes,50 Shades of Grey.
@Elaine I actually enjoyed the first book ?
I have never even been tempted to read FSOG. From what I read about it, I’m thinking it’s a waste of my time. ?

More than I’d like to admit

No, never.
I threw away one book; I didn’t want to be responsible for anyone else being triggered like I was. I know, judgy. But a dog was killed horribly at the outset. It was disturbing.
Not thrown away just put aside somewhere I will 4get about?
Loved Passages.
I’ve thrown some right across the room- Fifty shades comes to mind!
I would never “throw away” a book but I have donated quite a few duds

Yes…college textbooks 10 years after I needed them. Found in a closet…trashed them.
No
Never!

HPB is my second home! I just turned in eight copy paper boxes filled with books, DVDs, and CDs . . . and I’ve more in the offing. 🙂

Also local clothes closets. They take books too.
My library has a bookstore they keep open and sell donated books. They also have a table where they put free books for anyone to pick up. Check with your local library.
No. I will give a book away, but, I will never throw one away.

No
I once gave my teen age sister a book on proper etiquette for teens, and she threw it at me saying what do you think I am , a slob?
Yes, if it mocks God…

I only threw a book away because it got wet
Yes…2 because they were very odd and surprisingly pornographic!

Bill Cosby’s book on fatherhood — because!
Yep – The DaVinci Code!
My favorite children’s book: “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom”. My children loved it to death so I had to throw it away and get a new one.
I have not disposed OF a Book myself; But I had a Friend who flushed American Psycho down the toilet. … ! …
Once the dictionary that was falling apart because I used it so much
