I think mine was either “Pickles the Firehouse Cat” or “Scuppers the Sailor Dog.” Both cute books, but it’s funny to think how far I traveled away from cute within five to seven years.
Oh heck no! Sometimes I can’t even remember what I did yesterday. Old age it is a creepin’ in! But the first book I remember is Shirley Temple’s Fairy Tales.
I can’t remember for sure the first, but some of the earliest books I remember were the Dick and Jane readers they still used my first few years of school, some of my Weekly Reader Book Club selections – Danny And The Dinosaur, The Matchstick Girl, Harry The Dirty Dog, Curious George – and Brighty Of The Grand Canyon.
If was an adoptee version of Wizard of OZ called the wizard of the emerald city…. one of the 6 books I read at the end of the first grade( hated reading at the time but my parents did not give me any choice)
I hated reading all through grade school and my parents never encouraged it. I was in special classes for reading until middle school then when I discovered R. L. Stine, my reading went threw the roof.
I hated reading in the elementary school but in my summer before 5 th grade I read the Headless horseman and was so hoocked I read the damn book in a day…. then I read all the books by Duma( three musketeers) and a few others we had and have been reading ever since… then I discovered the world of Michael Chriton( Jurassic Park) and I was hooked for life
@Erica High was more Stephen King, then senior year I really got into really classic stuff like Beowulf, Great expectations, Canterbury Tales, etc. I just recently discovered V.C. Andrews. Purchased about 6 books at one time.
The Cat and the Hat. My father loves to read–when I was four he started me in this Dr.Seuss book club. Every month a different Dr. Seuss book came. I have a vague memory of reading “The Cat and the Hat” out loud to my Dad. I was four so most likely I was just repeating what I’d heard him read to me before 🙂
I think it may have been The Magic Roundabout. It belonged to my sister who is older than me before it was mine. We even had a dog named Dougal after the dog in the book.?
I remember the first book that led me to a life long love of science Fiction…Star Surgeon by Nourse. I was excited when I found that it was being republished as an e-book.
All I remember is going to the library and getting a whole stack of books and reading all of them. I remember some of my first books I brought home that were mine and not from a library were Clifford the Big Red Dog books.
I don’t remember what it was called, but it was a Dr. Suesss, it was actually my favorite, not my first. It was the one with the mouse in it and he let all these creatures live on his horns and they started ruining his horns, but then it came time for his horn’s to fall off.
Unfortunately, my original copy got “destroyed” after going through my hands, my brother’s and my sister’s. Fortunately, some years ago I worked part time at Barnes & Noble and was able to buy another copy of it as it had come back into print. I was more excited about finding that than almost any other book!
Miss Hickory. Don’t remember if it’s the very first (sure I was reading something in 1st grade) but it’s the first I remember really well. Part of it was because I was so proud to be reading a “thick” book.
Not sure of my first, but my favorite was Hand, hand, fingers, thumb – a Dr. Seussish type book. My mom hated the nights we’d read that book (repeatedly) ?. First chapter book that stuck with me was Silent Storm – the first time I remember crying over a story
Grimm’s Fairy Tales ?
Clifford’s Puppy Days was the first book I could “read” myself.
I think mine was either “Pickles the Firehouse Cat” or “Scuppers the Sailor Dog.” Both cute books, but it’s funny to think how far I traveled away from cute within five to seven years.
My lap. 2 minutes ago…. Did not think anyone else knew Pickles!!
Not a very well-known book now, but it will always be a cherished memory for me.
Actually use it to measure fringe for my knitting now. Perfect size… Probably the first redemption story I ever read 😛
Was searching to make sure nobody else had already posted a cartoon I shared here… Jaw hit the floor when this comment popped up 😀
@Cindy I use books as rulers occasionally. They should always have multiple uses!
Aye… As long as it doesn’t hurt them… I should probably pack the book up for preservation. The actual pages are getting old and brittle.
True.
Oh heck no! Sometimes I can’t even remember what I did yesterday. Old age it is a creepin’ in! But the first book I remember is Shirley Temple’s Fairy Tales.

@Erica High was more Stephen King, then senior year I really got into really classic stuff like Beowulf, Great expectations, Canterbury Tales, etc. I just recently discovered V.C. Andrews. Purchased about 6 books at one time.
What trips me out about VC Andrews is she died in the mid 80s but the family hired ghost writers to write under her name.
@Erica Really? I didn’t know that. That’s crazy.
I have all her original works, the ghost writer is awful nothing like VC Andrews works. Can’t read them.
