I thought cloud atlas was a better movie than a book. Another that wasn’t better, but I liked both the book and the movie equally in their own ways, is Neil Gaiman’s stardust.
I did not like the movie….they significantly changed it by making Isabel blissfully ignorant that the baby’s mother was alive. In the book, both she and Tom knew.
I agree, I think they are nailing it with book to mini series…. I thought this and Big Little Lies were done really well and I really liked the adaptation of 13 Reasons Why
Not better but I was so impressed with the movie version of ‘we need to talk about Kevin’
Please Do Not watch de movie before reading the book.. I think you will not understand the story the way it’s meant… and it wil spoil the book.. But if you’ve read the book.. the movie makes you feel the despair…
Sense and Sensibility (newer one with Kate Winslet). I LOVE Jane Austen, but I thought the ending in this movie was better than in the book, in reference to what Willoughby does. I don’t want to give anything away by saying more.
Well, even though I haven’t read the 50 shades books I would still say the movies are better. But this is my reasoning- I TRIED to read 50 shades of gray, but I honestly thought it was so poorly written I just couldn’t get through it. I’m not overly impressed with the movies either….but at least I was able to get through the movies.
I think the handmaids take tv series is better than the book Also the film Howard’s End I loved the characters better in the film The lovely bones is a brilliant film equal to the book
The Handmaids Tale was one of the best things I’d seen on TV in a very long time. So much so, I wouldn’t want to read the book. I can’t wait to see what they do with the next series as there are no more books.
the book is kind of hopeless in feeling very depressing yes I’m excited to see what happens next although the first series hasn’t covered everything that happened in the book so we’ll see
I saw both the first and second ones with my mom. And she was lost with both of them. I haven’t gotten the chance to see or read Death Cure yet though. That one’s on my list for sure.
@Tracie I am reading it now and he takes his time threading the plots together, almost, it seems as through he’s seduced by each person and Savannah. The movie gets right into the murder plot. Different mediums.
Yes. And, despite his recent scandal, Kevin Spacey was magnificent in his role. John Cusak, also nailed his character. Rue Paul, too, was amazing. I love that area.
i have found any book Ive read and watched the film, Ive always preferred film. ps I love you, before I go to sleep, confessions of a shopholic, gone girl, the duff, my sisters keeper. I can’t think of any others although I’m sure there others
I much preferred the book on that one the film was far too stereotypical and so unfair it the author changing the storyline to suit viewers ‘expectations’.
I read the book after I saw the movie… I remember thinking it was different, but liking it. It was a long time ago though… this makes me want to Go back and read it again!
Well I have fond memories of my fourth grade teacher Miss Finley reading it to the class. And I read it to my kids a. And I read it to my kids a couple years ago and two out of three of them loved it. They fell asleep on the movie. I don’t think it was a bad movie but I wasn’t impressed, personally.
@Jackie I’ve always loved the movie so when I found out it was a book I was like omg I have to read this!! Only 200ish pages but took me a month to read because it was so boring I kept falling asleep through it lol
Let the right one in. I love the movie but when I read the book it was really creepy. Not in a good horror/thriller kind of way but a gross kind of way…..
The girl with the dragon tattoo films (original Swedish obviously). A good story but I think I’m alone in thinking the books were pretty badly written.
I agree the books were slow and meandering. The movies consolidated everything into a nice well done story. I attributed the writing to maybe it was just the translator(s) who weren’t good.
Shawshannk Redemtion
I’ve never read the book- how is it different?

So many perfect moments in Jaws that translate only to the screen.
@Barbara Prefered the film ending too?
This version of The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe.
Yes Hand Maids Tale !
I agree, I think they are nailing it with book to mini series…. I thought this and Big Little Lies were done really well and I really liked the adaptation of 13 Reasons Why
Nerve. The book was sort of lame and the ending was awful, but the movie was excellent.
Brooklyn
A Walk To Remember
I’m not sure… but certainly a few that had very good integrity..
I thought Schindler’s List was comparable to the book.
I also think the first few Harry Potter movies were truer to the story.. I love the movies and the books…
Atonement
Definitely! The book was awful!
@Rivki I thought so too! But the movie was fabulous!
The Notebook
The shack
Gone Girl… I couldn’t even finish the book but thought the film was ok.
A Man Called Ove
Not better but I was so impressed with the movie version of ‘we need to talk about Kevin’
Please Do Not watch de movie before reading the book.. I think you will not understand the story the way it’s meant… and it wil spoil the book..
But if you’ve read the book.. the movie makes you feel the despair…
I didn’t even know that the film was based off of a book. I watched it for the first time a few months ago and was blown away.

American Psycho, the film helped make sense of the book.
Twilight ??
Possibly Trainspotting. And I thought Room was as good as the movie

Atonement was a great movie ?

Didnt know it was a book!
Well, even though I haven’t read the 50 shades books I would still say the movies are better. But this is my reasoning- I TRIED to read 50 shades of gray, but I honestly thought it was so poorly written I just couldn’t get through it. Felt just like that about the book. Didn’t see the movie. Don’t see many movies-so very selective
@Charlotte you’re not missing out on much! ?
No
Anna Karenina.
Which movie version do you like? I really liked the one with Christopher Reeve (1985)
I have only seen the one with Keira Knightley.
@Nancy I think there must be at least a half dozen or more different versions! I haven’t seen the Keira Knightly one. But she is always very good.
It was excellent, but I still am glad I read the novel, @Jef.
Da Vinci code
Dan Brown’s writing style can be drudgery
The Kite Runner. The main character was so unlikeable in the book that I was happy the film cast him well and made him more likeable.
The Hours
I think the handmaids take tv series is better than the book
Also the film Howard’s End I loved the characters better in the film
The lovely bones is a brilliant film equal to the book
The Handmaids Tale was one of the best things I’d seen on TV in a very long time. So much so, I wouldn’t want to read the book.

the book is kind of hopeless in feeling very depressing yes I’m excited to see what happens next although the first series hasn’t covered everything that happened in the book so we’ll see

The series of unfortunate events (the first one), I’m not really a fan of his writing style
book thief.
The Maze Runner
But: One thing I noticed about the movie was you /have/ to read the book to be able to understand it.
I agree – loved the first movie but was totally lost at the second one cause I hadn’t read the book
Yeah that’s prob true but some of the things that irritated me about the book they changed for the movie. I haven’t even seen the second one ?♀️
I saw both the first and second ones with my mom. And she was lost with both of them. I haven’t gotten the chance to see or read Death Cure yet though. That one’s on my list for sure.

I loved them both! ! One of my absolute favorites
It’s such a magical place. My son went to school there. In spite of the ‘pirate’ atmosphere…commercial etc, it’s still so beautiful.
TV show. The handmaids tale
Miss peregrines home for peculiar children.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the whistle stop Cafe…The FILM was GREAT the book was confusing, even though I managed to read it to the end.
Harry potter
Cold Mountain
i have found any book Ive read and watched the film, Ive always preferred film. ps I love you, before I go to sleep, confessions of a shopholic, gone girl, the duff, my sisters keeper. I can’t think of any others although I’m sure there others

I did enjoy the book, it’s just less romantic.
The Martian
The Godfather and The Room
Bridges over Madison County. Book was awful. Movie was not bad. Not great, but not bad.
I read the book after I saw the movie… I remember thinking it was different, but liking it. It was a long time ago though… this makes me want to

@Douglas I agree the films were awful…. actually I gave up after the first one but the books are good and well written I thought
I agree the books were slow and meandering. The movies consolidated everything into a nice well done story. I attributed the writing to maybe it was just the translator(s) who weren’t good.
@Jef Good point. I hadn’t thought of that. Just maybe I slandered Stig Larsson a bit to quickly.
Dan Brown however……
Yeah. Dan Brown was like reading something I might have written for English Class in high school. ?
However Swedish author Fredrik Backman is consistently great. Maybe his translators are a step above?
@Jef Once heard a critic refer to him as the literary equivalent of a McDonald’s ?
@Jef thanks – I’ll give him a try.
He wrote A Man Called Ove which was made into a good Swedish film adaptation.
The divergent series
The Piano
