Have any of you read the entire Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austin? Curious. I’m enjoying it but it’s kind of a struggle. How times have changed!

Have read it a number of times ? . What’s making it a struggle ?
The old time and mixed writing styles of the 18th century romantic novel!
I hear you. Love Austen’s style. Witty, romantic, insightful. I’m re-reading “Mansfield Park” right now. Re-read “Northanger Abbey” last week.
I absolutely adored Pride & Prejudice, but I enjoy satire, sass, and social commentary.
And reading this, I hope I don’t come across as like, elitist or snobby or something because I swear I’m not. Read what you enjoy, by all means! I’m just a particularly big fan of these things, which gives Austen a certain appeal for me, lol.
@Caity I’m enjoying it as well! The writing style is a bit hard to follow at times, but it’s great!
I’ve read it. I enjoyed it a lot. However, since reading a lot of contemporary, paranormal and similar works in the indie author community, I haven’t touched a lot of the classics.
Yes its been awhile though
More than once. I love it.
So many times and I absolutely adore it. I read a lot of classics though, if you’re not used to them they can be a little difficult to get through
I teach it every year.
Love it!
I tried reading it several times, but have found it so hard because of how much I fell in love with the 2005 movie.. and attempted to read the book after watching the movie. I found some differences.. mainly in Mr. Darcey’s character, and that bothered me lol so I just gave up on it!
All time favorite!!!!
I’ve read it, but it was a bit of a struggle for me as well. Didn’t really enjoy it, but then again I’m not a fan of romances.
I read it years ago (but only so I would better understand “Pride, Prejudice and Zombies.” ?♀️ ?♂️ ?
Ok ?? Lol!
That’s what I am reading. Pride Prejudice and Zombies. Its still hard to read.
@Debbie Agreed!
Yep multiple times and it is one of my favs
The language is more difficult based on the time period. The syntax is more complex.
I prefer Sense and Sensibility
Literally just picked this one up two days ago! I can’t wait to read it ?
It’s great!
Yes! All time favorite! But I first read it in middle school and for some reason I had a much easier time with old time language then. I tried to reread a Shirley Jackson story and I had a difficult time following the language. Funny how our brains change. I don’t know if I could have gotten into pride and prejudice now without previously reading it
It is a bit hard to follow at times. I find myself rereading sentences often.
Read it. Hated it.
Same.
My fave!
I read it many years ago and had a bit of a struggle getting through. I still have it and some of her other books I’d like to try again.
Read it years ago in high school. I generally hated that required reading. I think I would enjoy it much more now.
Push through.Watch the BBC long movie. Read it again. Listen to it. I love it!
I did a number of years ago. I loved it. But I also struggled getting through it. I needed complete silence when reading in order to focus.
My #1 book! I read it twice a year and watch the DVD series every Mother’s Day. ??
I have. Some parts I read out loud. That always helps me get through it. ?
I totally get it. ?
One of my faves! I also struggled with it at first but once you really get into it it’s great!
I read it just struggled from gaining everything and keeping it in my head. I need to re-read it.
A favorite book!
Loved it! It becomes easier as you read.
I read it once a year. My favourite
It is excellent on audio book
I’ve read P&P many times. Persuasion, however, is my favorite book.
There is an annotated version that you might like. It has a page of text with the opposite page explaining things from that page. The notes themselves are an interesting read.
One of my favorites by her
Love it!
Had to read it in High School and it was a struggle. I think you eventually get used to the language. I did love the BBC production with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, very easy to watch, especially Mr Darcy ?
I’ve read it several times and I absolutely love it
Have read it multiple times….love it!
I did
I did and I loved it x
It was one of the topics I picked for my oral finals at Uni (Jane Austen and her novels“), so yes, I‘ve read them all. Once you get used to the language, it‘s nice!
There‘s a „sequel“ By P.D. James I enjoyed quite a lot: „Death Comes to Pemberly“. You can treat yourself to this one once you‘ve finished!
Plus there‘s another modern novel which focuses on the life of the staff in the house of the Bennett family around the time of the events in P&P: „Longbourn“ by Jo Baker. I liked that one a lot.
You will eventually get there. I’m currently reading Mansfield Park and I feel the same.
I did. Really enjoyed it.
I have. Loved it, but it is hard to read because of the style of English used.
Twice I read it. And loved it. And I”‘m planning to read it again.
I’ve read it numerous times and also read pride and prejudice and zombies which is aside from the zombie storyline almost word for word pride and prejudice.
Yes, they have, I had to ask a retired Lit. professor what a drawing room is.
I did and loved it
It’s one I reread every few years. Finish it, you wont be disappointed
Yes! I took a Jane Austin class when I was in college and fell in love! Once I’m done reading the Lord of the Rings books, and maybe the Hobbit, there’s a couple of her books I’d like to read
My favourite book ever!
Yes, I have read it, and yes, times have changed. Good way for young women of today to learn how lucky they are.
Absolutely
I did and loved it
I listen the audiobook and I felt like I was in the book ?
Pride and Prejudice was the very first Jane Austin books I have ever read and I just felt in love with her books ?
Studied it for my GCSEs at high school!
I did in college and enjoyed it a lot. I don’t think I ever finished any of her other books, though.
Also loved Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. My husband and I were both reading it when we met. It sure got him a second look!
It’s one of my favourite books. It can take a while to get into a rhythm with books written before the 20th century though. I think it took me two or three chapters to find my rhythm.
I’ve read all Jane Austen’s books and love them but they are harder to read….
Interesting bit of trivia – Jane Austen’s books were often ‘prescribed’ as therapeutic reading for soldiers suffering from shellshock/PTSD during WWI, something about them being ‘homely’, I believe. They were apparently very popular in the trenches!
