To Kill a Mockingbird for me, also I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.
I loved Maya Angelou but I was very surprised I didn’t like To kill a Mockingbird, gave up with it
Mockingbird is my all time favourite book. I think I’ve read it pretty much every year since I was 14.
This gives no perspective as you have no idea how old I am ?! 43, so probably around 30 times….
I got the sequel as a Christmas present two years ago, it’s still sat on the bookshelves I’m telling myself I HAVE to finish Mockingbird first
@Nina, I have to admit that I didn’t finish the sequel. I was so looking forward to it, when I went to pick it up I was so excited, bought good chocolate so that I could settle in for the ride, explained to the husband and kids how very very important it was. And then, nothing. I keep intending to pick it back up.
The Bold As Love series by Gwyneth Jones. I know I am always on about these books but they are fucking wonderful.
The help by Katherine Stockett x
‘The Turkish Embassy Letters’ by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. She was self-taught and ran away from her expected female obligations. She travelled across Europe in mad circumstances and casually brought the inoculation for Smallpox back to the U.K. She was also very close friends with Alexander Pope. The book is a fascinating read. Other than that, I would recommend the private letters, poems, essays and speeches of our multi-lingual Queen Elizabeth I. A very clever lady, she knew how to manipulate her Privy Council and stay alive.
I like the sound of those!
Lady MWM was incredibly ahead of her time. So much so that when she was dying/died, her family tried to burn all of her work. The letters survive only because a priest made a copy. Much of it was lost which is such a shame!
The book of her letters is available in bookshops as are those of Queen Elizabeth I.
QEI rocked though! She talked her way out of execution and many other incidences. Her famous Tilbury speech is, I think, both clever and emotional as was her last speech to Parliament, known as the ‘Golden Speech’.
Wow, incredible women! Thanks for the info, I’ll definitely look these up.
