@Kerry I think that one is the best. I have seen awful versions where the father turns up alive and it just annoys me that they would change such a vital part of the book for a so-called happy ending. When actually, reading it as a child myself, part of its charm was that she actually was a little girl by herself and she came out on top. (OK, with help in the end). 🙂 Try watching the Shirley Temple version though… great film nonetheless.
@Lauren and others^: I will second that! Great film, directed by Clint Eastwood. Mystic River won several Academy Awards – best actor(Sean Penn) and best supporting actor (Tim Robbins). Trivia: Dennis Lehane (author) makes a very brief cameo appearance in the parade near film’s end.
The Book is amazing l hate the film it turns it into a romance and takes out all the ( probably too controversial) part about the hypocrisy within the Catholic church.
I am lucky enough to have grown up in France so read the book years ago. Absolutely love both book and many movies made from it! Alexandre Dumas is my favourite classic author 😀
@Dave Angel Heart – Oh my word!! Watched this when it came out and stayed with me for ever, not sure everyone’s stomach is strong enough for it but I though it was excellent!
@Lynn I’m rubbish with The Shining, I’d probably be ok reading it though, and not got the time for GWTW tomorrow but will put it on my watch again list
@Kristal to kill a mockingbird and the green mile have been watched together, is Gone Baby Gone super good, I quite enjoyed the book but not on my top favourite list
The secret garden or a little princess
Which version though? I have never seen a good or accurate version of A Little Princess.
@Nicky I’ve only seen the 1995 movie version and I liked it
I grew up when there was a series of the secret garden and adored it (and the book!) and my kids loved the little princess ?

I will always love the Shirley Temple version of The Little Princess. I’m old.

Try Simon Birch (based on A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving)
@Paige I didn’t know this!! I love A Prayer for Owen Meany (I love most of John Irwin’s books) this suggestion is now up there with shutter island …
It’s a sweet adaptation of it. I love Oliver Platt. And Ashley Judd plays the mother. The little boy that is Simon (Owen) is amazing.
The Secret Life of Bees
@Lynn I didn’t get on with the book, but can see how the film might change my mind thank you
The Shining or Gone with the wind
