I rummaged through boxes of books at a swap meet, and paid for several myself: House of Terror, Wilderness Champion, a Bobbsey Twins book, a Hardy Boys one, Born Free, etc.
Ordered from Weekly Reader Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher about 60 years ago. I remember the title as Misunderstood Betsy. I loved the story of the nervous little girl who transforms when sent to a Vermont farm. Her no nonsense country relatives reminded me of my own country relatives. It was wonderful to buy a book because most (not all) of the books I read as a child came from the library.
I still have books with short stories and excerpts from novels from the school book sale of discontinued textbooks. Now, I’m a devotee of Barnes and Noble sale tables and Kindle bargains.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton There were probably some at school book fairs in elementary school, but I remember The Outsiders. I think it was 60 cents.
I love that book so much – that when my child was a teenager- he came home and had that book – I started reciting it from the beginning word for word – he was like wow mom –
I’m sure it was Babysitters Club or something from the Scholastic Flyers but I don’t REMEMBER.
The first book I actually remember buying was Little Girl Lost by Drew Barrymore. Eye opening into what she was exposed to at such a young age….I was probably 13 when I bought it.
My mom always bought me tons of books but I remember sneaking and buying Laura Palmer’s Diary when I was on vacation with my friend and her family. She had refused to buy that one for me. ?
Other than textbooks the first book I bought was from the Book of the Month Club. I could get a book free and then cancel the membership. I had almost no money so I did that. The free book I chose was a Dictionary. I was so excited to learn new words. I read it from cover to cover. I really am strange!
With my own money, S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. Prior to that, there were many flea market Nancy Drews and a bunch from the Scholastic and Weekly Reader order forms that my parents bought for me.
The first one I remember buying (because my mom bought and loaned me most of my books for most of my life- still does lol) was The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.
