The Graveyard Book – Neil Gaiman Rebecca – Daphne du Maurice The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern The Historian – Elizabeth Kostova House of Leaves – Mark Danielewski Let the Right One In – Ajvide Lindqvist The Vampire Chronicles – Anne Rice The Gargoyle – Andrew Davidson
Ooo, I love a bit of gothic. You could start at the beginning with The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole or The Mysteries of Udolpho or The Romance of the Forest by Ann Radcliffe through such fantastic authors such as William Beckford, Sheridan Le Fanu (especially ‘In a Glass Darkly’), the Brontes, Bram Stoker & Mary Shelley and of course, Edgar Allen Poe. Big shout out to my favourites though – The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived at the Castle by Shirley Jackson, Daphne du Maurier’s ‘Rebecca’ and ‘Jamaica Inn’, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Luis Zafon, The 13th Tale by Diane Setterfield, The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Turn of the Screw by M. R. James, The Woman in Black by Susan Hill….then there is the whole sub genre of American Gothic and Southern Gothic…it is such a fab genre, I could go on all day but I will shut up now???
The Shadow of the Wind The Angel’s Game Prisoner of Heaven The Labyrinth of the Spirits This is a 4-book series of Gothic novels by Carlos Ruiz Zafon set in Barcelona, Spain. The series is also known as The Cemetery of Lost Books.
I’ve read the first two and did like the first one better. The others are in my tbr shelf. I’d like to complete the series although I’m not a gothic lit fan.
Here for the comments
