Ishiguro is not for everyone. But those of us who love him do find his books deeply rewarding.
I was fairly skeptical for the first third or half of the book. It felt like it was going to be too obvious and predictable and trite. I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out.
And I think that deliberately subverting expectations ended up being pretty essential to why I loved it. But it can also make it a frustrating read.
I didn’t super care for the writing. But I will also never forget the story. I would say it is worth a read if you tend to read more than 30 books a year. …is there a movie? This might be the one time the movie would be better than the book!
Stay! Read on! It’s a awesome book. You will be rewarded for staying
It wasn’t my cup of tea but I did finish it.
I finished it, but in retrospect I could have read something much better during that time. It’s…just….so……..slow.

It’s in my top ten, but it also broke my heart.
Keep with it, it does take about half the book before you understand what’s going on
I am actually getting bored. Thanks for the heads up.
Loved it! He’s an adventurous writer and I admire him more with every book of his I read.
a rare example of a book i did not persevere with.
Loved it ❤️
Me too!
Just ordered this along with Remains of the Day.
This book creates a spell … an alternate entirely believable reality that will haunt you as will the characters.
Keep going. It’s wonderful.
I thought it was mesmerizing, haunting…I still think about it several years after reading it.
It’s complicated, but I still think about it.
I finished it, but it is not a favorite of mine.

The subject matter was very disturbing.
I loved the remains of the day. I hated this one and didn’t finish it.
I would get impatient with it, but I am glad I read it and then watched the movie.
Stay!
