First read it when I was eight years old, and I’ve read it at least seven times since. It’s my favorite book! Legolas is, of course, my favorite, but that’s because book Legolas was a total troll and he cracked me up so many times! And Merry and Pippin were intelligent in the books, too! I loved their characters!!! The book is so amazing. There’s more to get out of it at every read. ?
Tolkien wrote The Hobbit for his children when they were little. It became so popular that his publisher asked him to follow it up with a sequel and it became so much more. The prose is similar, but the story isnt. The Hobbit is around 300 pages, barely. The Lord of the Rings is over a 1,000. I’d say the difference would be something like between the first Harry Potter book and the last Harry Potter book. Same series. Same characters. Just more depth, a little darker…
Loved the movies, haven’t read the books. I have them though, but I’m not sure when I’ll get around to them. I’ve read The Hobbit, and while it wasn’t bad, it didn’t make it onto my list of favourite books.
Never could get into it but my husband is an obsessed fan of both the books and movies, and made me sit through all 3 films. By the end of the last film I was thinking if I were Sam and had been through all that, and now Frodo was hesitating to throw the ring into the fire, I’d have been tempted to just shove Frodo right in…
I just discovered my brother hates the names Pippin and Merry. But he loves SMaug. I said I love dragons too but how can you choose Smaug over Treebeard and the Ents? Easy hes says, fire kills wood. Yes fire does kill wood. And if he doesn’t watch it it will kill his Harry Potter books. ……….. Actually I couldn’t burn any book least of all Harry Potter but the boy seriously needs an education in Tolkien.
On my first read, I loved Fellowship of the Ring, got hopelessly bogged down in the Two Towers and gave up. After I saw the movies I re-read them and loved them.
Read it YEARS ago. Took me three attempts. Hard get into it at first, but third time was the charm. It was totally worth it.
Couldn’t really get into the books, but liked the movies
Brilliant!
Couldn’t get into it

I agree Legolas was so much more sardonically humorous in the books! ?? there were so many little details that couldn’t be added into the movies.
I love the movies, but there’s no beating the book!
@Debi Agree!
Totally worth it, takes a long time, read the books twice, first time as a kid – had so many notes/annotations lol
Read the Hobbit and it was boring so I never picked up the rest. There is a lot of telling not a lot of showing.
The Hobbit and TLotR are quite different.
Good to know. I figured since they were by the same author and loosely connected that it would be told in a similar manner.

Does it still tell vs show? That was my biggest complaint in The Hobbit.
Yeah. I guess that’s just his style. Lots of worldbuilding and details and names of places and characters.
I would rather read Tolkien 1000 times than Harry Potter once though lol
Loved the movies, haven’t read the books. I have them though, but I’m not sure when I’ll get around to them. I’ve read The Hobbit, and while it wasn’t bad, it didn’t make it onto my list of favourite books.
Great read. Really enjoyed it

Love it.
Soooooo Boring!! Not my kind of book!
Loved them.
Definitely should read the whole trilogy!!! I absolutely love it! I recommend it to everyone!
YES!!! Read it and push through the hard stuff. It’s so good and good for your soul!!
Love!
I can’t say enough good things about it. ?? I love LOTR. I highly recommend it.
I liked the book and found the languages pretty fascinating.
Love it! It takes a while to read. It takes me about 5-6 months to read. (Because I try to do life and do other reads.)
But worth it.
Loved The books, the movies not so much.
Only read the first book and fell in love
Loved!
Love all of Tolkien’s works, they are wonderful
Love!
Best trilogy ever.
The best! No other fantasy would exist without it, really . . .
I need to get it out and read it again!!
Enchanting and beloved by me.
Love them. Some of my favorite classics
This is a rather dangerous question lol Lord of the Rings fandom can be pretty intense ?? i love the trilogy. Liked the Hobbit..
I have the book and its on my TBR and I have loved to read and books since a small child when our class at school read The Hobbit. ?
Bleh
LOVE IT! ❤️
Boring
Never gets old. Epic world building that others are still trying to match. And Peter Jackson should be ashamed to call himself a fan of the books!
Loved the Hobbit, have yet to make it through even the first LOTR book, despite trying several times.
I love the movies still have the books in my tbr bookcase x
Liked he movies way better. I stopped reading the second one halfway through. Gonna give it another go eventually.
Love-love-love. My first love.
LOOOOVE IT! I am such a huge fan when it comes to the lord of the rings.
Yes
epic
Never read it and never going to. Disliked all the movies.
Well worth sticking with. I loved The Hobbit from page 1. LOTR took longer to get into but so worth it, really beautiful storytelling.
I’m on book 2 bits I’m struggling but on the whole I’m enjoying it
Yes. They can seem slow in spots, but it’s a wonderful story. Tolkien was a brilliant writer
Loved it and the movie as well. It’s about the only fantasy I have been able to get into.

Hates the NAME Pippin? ☹️ That’s What I named my dog.
Meh
love them
Far too long.
The best fantasy books written
He writes like everyone is blind. So long and drawn out…great story though.
I love all the intricate detail! Helps me better visualize the world the story is set in.
I love it; texture in the detail.
Boring
One of my very favorite books ever!
I loved it and the Hobbit
On my first read, I loved Fellowship of the Ring, got hopelessly bogged down in the Two Towers and gave up. After I saw the movies I re-read them and loved them.
The books where better than the movies… they left to much out
They are very detailed, I mean VERY detailed. Give it a shot, it is good, but it feels like Tolkein takes whole chapters just describing them walking.
Couldn’t get into it . Loved the movies
My favourite works of literature of all time
There are so many yes and no! I’ll definitely try to attempt and see where it goes. The movies I’ve tried but may have to try again
He covered so much that no fantasy novel can be written without a sprinkle of Tolkien.
I enjoyed reading “The Hobbit”.
