Any recommendations on a dark, violent fantasy series. I mean like one that doesn’t tone the action down.

Following cuz I need this BADLY
The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie.
@Veronica I tried it and couldn’t even finished the first book. This is why I asked as apparently this book fits the description of what I am after but I just found that it was way to slow and couldn’t finish it.
For what it’s worth, I nearly gave up after the first few chapters. The tone and language completely threw me. I only stuck with it because of a trusted recommendation. It was worth sticking with!!
Another violent and dark one: Peter V Brett’s Demon Core series.
I found it the same Daniel. Slow, very slow. Like, it starts off great when he’s on the run from those creatures thinking his mates are dead, then it swaps to glokta, and the pace slows dramatically. In fact, I thought there was far too much character swapping. The pace of a chapter would eventually pick up and you’d think you were getting somewhere and bam, he swapped characters again and totally lost pace. Got to the second installment of what seemed like random character buring friends in a desert when some dude comes along to sweep her undetected past some army looking for her, he randomly brought her back in to the story after the pace had picked up so just put it down. Really couldn’t see what she was adding to the story. I get he’s weaving all the characters in, but by Christ it’s a boring build. Read over half of it and had to put it down. And I don’t do that lightly. Maybe it was because of all the hype surrounding it that I felt it was lackluster
Martin Jones yeah mate, beginning was great, I thought I was on to something good but it just went on and on and on. Kind of felt like watching days of our lives. Hahaha
This series pretty much defines the grimdark genre.
I also can’t say enough good things about the first law. The characters are so unique and over 3 books they are revealed as so complex. I love this series because it’s written entirely in shades of gray. And the third book just reveals so much.
Maybe I should give it another go. By the sounds of it they get better
All of theses books don’t hold back the punches/violence…
The Black Company by Glen Cook
Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop
Joe Abercombie’s First Law trilogy
Brent Week’s Night Angel Trilogy
John Gwynne’s Faith of the Fallen series.
Peter V Brett’ Demon Cycle series.
@Brian plus 1 for John Gwynne. Loved those
First law you definitely need to finish it
Glotka is the man
Mark Lawrence’s Broken Empire trilogy.
@Henriëtte yes definitely!
@Henriëtte i second this also
@Henriëtte fully agree
100% agree
Chronicles of Breed is different. Not terribly dark, but the protagonist is an asshole. It’s fun.
Iron and magic by Ilona Andrew…not actually what you would call dark… but nonstop action good fantasy read
For straight up no fucks given brutality id say abercrombie for truly disturbing dark dark fantasy id say the aspect emperor seriea by scott bakker. The most visceral hardcore graphic fantasy iv read

Brent weeks night angel trilogy
@Jesse great selection one of my favourite series in fantasy
I found The Lies Locke Lamora to be pretty dark, definitely a great read as well
Making my way through Red Seas Under Red Skies at he moment. I really need a few free hours to immerse. I’m struggling because I only have snippets of time usually right before bed to try to absorb it and 20 to 30 minutes each time is not enough. I had a hard time with the first book at the beginning but once it got going I loved it. The second one is doing the same thing to me but again, I really think it’s because I need to have some time to devote to it and really get involved.
Yes!! Uprooted by Naomi Novik.
@Kathryn wow, this does sound good. Thankyou, have you read any of her other books?
@Danial I haven’t, but I’m dying to after I stumbled upon Uprooted. Spinning Silver is on my Christmas list so fingers crossed I get it!
I had no expectations starting the book, and it blew me away. It’s not gory, but the deaths are CREEPY and dark. It’s inspired by tales of Baba Yaga!
@Kathryn very nice, thanks again. ☺️
I’m really liking Six of Crows action scenes!
Black Company series’ first book is pretty dark and violent. I haven’t read more of them, yet.
Nicholas Eames Kyngs of the Wyld is a beauty
Joe Abercrombie First Law
Mark Lawrence Prince of Thorns
Anna Spark Smith
