Amazing price! I like my Kindle Paperwhite better, but I also keep a Fire in my car to listen to books while driving, using text-to-speech, or audible. It’s sure worth $30 for that!
@Gretchen, text to speech is enabled on most, but not all, kindle books. But you can only use it on a Kindle device with a speaker (and not on the apps on a non-Kindle device). When you open a book in a Kindle device with a speaker, like the Fire, just press at the top of the page, and it will pop up the option to play it using the speaker. Then just click the play button.
@Gretchen, The old Kindles with speakers (like the Kindle keyboard) were very robotic. But the voice on the newer Kindle Fires is much more natural in speech pattern. I find it very easy and pleasant to listen to. Not an Audible book, but good enough.
@Laura I’be never tried that on my Kindle, but I haven’t been able to read my screen since our yellow lab broke the glass screen…I never thought about listening to the books! (Hopefully Santa will bring me a shiny new Kindle).
@Patty, oh no! So sorry to hear about your Kindle mishap. ? You might want to check if the Kindle fire is still on sale – $30 might be worth spending to make sure you’ve got it, rather than keeping your fingers crossed for Santa. ?
@Gretchen, thanks for sharing that. It is a phenomenal deal, and worth grabbing for anyone who doesn’t have a device for Kindle, or text to speech/audible.
They are also great to have for the grands when they come over. Their parents do not want them to take them home, but are OK with them using them at our house. It has parental controls on them as well.
Should I get this or a kindle? Not a fan of tablets but I like the idea of one device storing a lot of books. Why would someone buy this instead of a kindle?
I have a Kindle Fire 7 and can thoroughly recommend it. I can store my books, photos, videos, access the internet, download apps etc. The biggest plus, for anybody on the fence, is that Amazon have a huge library of books you can download for free!
I have both the 7″ and the 10″ Kindle fires. Love them for books, a few mindless games ability to get on facebook, read the news, take and store pictures.. mostly I read..
me too my old one broke
Schaumburg Illinois
Hooray
Can you only read Kindle books on it? Or can you read Overdrive books from your library too?
Both
Not in New Zealand
You can read overdrive books in the kindle only if you’re in the US? You can’t if you’re in New Zealand? Is that what you’re saying?
Fire is more like a tablet than just an ereader…

Tell me about this text-to-speech business? How is it different from an audiobook?

@Laura Awesome! But is it like a robot reading it, or would it be a narrated version?

You’ll see the play button at the bottom right of the screen.
Thanks so much for answering my questions! I think $30 might be worth it…
If you spend a lot of time driving, or have other times when you’d like to read while multitasking, it could be a really worthwhile investment.
Check the Kindle book description to see if text to speech is enabled. It almost always is.
@Laura thanks, I never knew this.

I saw an article that said the deal would be through or also available on Cyber Monday.

Just bought mine today. I have a first generation so this is quite an upgrade.

I think mainly to have access to everything, as opposed to having different devices.
@Wendy can the fire tablet do everything the kindle can?
The fire is a type of kindle

Yes,@Ryan. My grands read on it and play games and if I allowed it could go on the internet.
I have both the 7″ and the 10″ Kindle fires. Love them for books, a few mindless games ability to get on facebook, read the news, take and store pictures.. mostly I read..
Awesome, thanks for heads up, I just ordered one for my mother for Christmas.
So does the Fire do everything an iPad does?
