Paperwhite is much better for reading in bright light or darkness. It automatically syncs with your goodreads
My prescription sunglasses made reading on my fire impossible – it looked black! They work with the Paperwhite though!
@Steph Do you the brightness?
@Kathy yes it has to do with the polarization or something. I thought it was broken for weeks, sporadically turning on. Lol
@Steph I am so sorry Steph. I didn’t like my fire at first then I found the brightness control and upped that when in the sun and all is good now.
I love my Fire as I don’t read in the dark or outside. I did not like how the paperwhite changes pages and sent it back.
Paperwhite only needs to be charged once a week or less. The Fire would need it every day. I like the Paperwhite when I travel and don’t always have a place to plug in. Nothing worse than getting into a book and find the low battery warning with no way to charge it.
Paper white is the way to go if your want a reader. Mine goes for weeks on a charge.
Depends on what you are looking for. Fire Tablets cost less and are fully functional tablets that can run games, music, television, graphic novels (color), and is also a camera. Some work with Alexa as well. The Paperwhite is just an e-reader and will require the Kindle version of e-books. The Fire can use Kindle format or other formats via apps (the Hoopla app from a public library for example). Sometimes the Kindle version is not available for all e-books in library collections which frustrates people. May not be an issue for you if you purchase everything that you read, but is an issue for one of my book club members who has a Paperwhite. Also, with the Fire you can download books via WiFi, so never need access to a computer to check out materials. Again, depends on your situation. But the Paperwhite holds a charge longer (up to 1 week vs. 10 hours) and some people like or need the ability to adjust for glare, etc. If you have never tried an e-reader, I say get the Fire because it can be inexpensive (especially around holidays), so you can try e-books with a modest investment. But since you have a Kindle already, you just need to decide which features you want.
@Rebecca thank you, I’ve been questioning the same thing, this helps.
Reading is better on Paperwhite.
I love my Paperwhite. I have over 600 books in that little portable library. I bought one for my daughter and for my mother, and they were ‘I’ll only ever enjoy a book with pages I can turn’, but are now complete Kindle addicts.
There is a new kindle available, with front lighting.
My Oasis was totally worth every penny. It’s like the paperwhite, but it has buttons to flip pages unlike the regular paperwhite. And it’s waterproof. Which was important to me since I sit on the deck with the kiddos while they play with the watertable in the summer.
@Jennifer I think my first choice Kindle had a button to turn pages. I believe it was 1st. generation. I really liked it. My daughter gave it to me when she bought her first paper white, long time ago.?
@Jennifer I have the first generation kindle now. I have the key board and the button to flip the page. And I love it. Its just old.
Love my Paperwhite.
Paper white if you read outside! And backlit for night!
I love my paperwhite I have 3 ☺️. My latest is water resistant. The Oasis is waterproof. My cousin, who has the beginnings of macular degeneration got it because the screen was easier to read for her, than the paperwhite.
I use my Amazon Fire HD 10 as my e-reader. Serves many purposes as well….just like a tablet. Love it.
The paperwhite has a no glare screen which is better for reading outdoors, as much as I loved my fire or any other tablet they have glare outdoors
I just got the oasis and I love it!!
The oasis is the one I love, it’s now 7” and lightweight.
I’ve had 3 Amazon Fire tablets. They all got slow and unresponsive after a year or two. I bought an ipad 3 years ago and I love it. Yes it costs more, but it is so much better than those Fires.
I tried the fire but it doesn’t work for me. It has internet and apps so lots of distraction, it’s like an iPad. Plus, it’s heavy.
And yeah you can get on goodreads with the paperwhite. I have the voyage.
I have paperwhite and love it! Mine is connected to my goodreads.
Paperwhite, Paperwhite, Paperwhite! Yes, you can connect to Goodreads on it. But if you want it specifically for reading, I can’t emphasize enough how much better the Paperwhite is.
I’ve been reading on an ipad for years. Got a paperwhite a few weeks ago Its so light and easy to read
The fire is a mini iPad type device. The paperwhite is a reader.
Love my paper White! No glare and no eye strain. My eyes bother me if I’m on my iPhone or iPad to long but I can read on my Kindle all day and they never bother me. I have a cover for mine that when I open it my Kindle is open to the page I’m reading and when I close it it turns my Kindle off like opening and closing a book. Love it.
Paperwhite is best. The fire is larger and heavier and the battery isn’t as long lasting. And it doesn’t fit in your purse as easily.
I love my paperwhite. I got a fire but hardly use it.
Another vote for Paperwhite.
Besides all the good points made above, the Fire has that ‘blue light’ problem that computers and smart phones have that messes with your sleep. Since the Paperwhite uses ‘e-paper’ technology it does not have that problem. Because I do a lot of reading before bed, this is really important to me.
You can turn the blue light option off.
@Erin I’d never heard of that. Good to know. It’s nice they figured out a way to block the blue light 🙂
Yeah they call it “blue shade” in the Quick Actions Menu.
Paperwhite is a dedicated e-reader. Has wifi connects to goodreads since it’s part of Amazon. Not a tablet so easy on your eyes and no distractions of the Fire which is a tablet
I’ve had both and paperwhite wins hands down.
The fire is heavy and it has a shiny screen which is difficult to read. It doesn’t feel like an e-reader mainly a tablet
I agree. The Fire is good for Candy Crush and Facebook, but the paperwhite is best for just reading.
One word: Paperwhite
I usually read on my Kindle app on my phone and I now also found the Kindle I guess icon for the PC, both of those are free is there some kind of effect on your eyes for reading on these
I like the fire because I can also use as tablet. And I can fit it in a purse
I’ve used both, thr Paperwhite is easier on the eyes., lighter weight, eade of holding
Paperwhite is my choice
Love the paperwhite
Paperwhite
If your going to go that route, you might consider just getting a tablet and using the kindle app.
Thank you so much everyone. Really thank you!!
I have both, and will be ordering a third.
I love my Paperwhite!
I have both a Kindle and the Paperwhite. By far, I find the Paperwhite much easier to read. If I’m browsing through a magazine, though, I like the Kindle.
@Pam Yes the Fire is good for magazines. I just started to get digital subscriptions.
Love them both. One really nice feature on Fire is Text to Speech on ebooks. Works great! Love the UK voice best. Ereader is more comfortable to physically read.
I like my fire as when traveling I can purchase a movie to watch.
I have and use both. Paperwhite is great for reading in the car, doctors office, outside etc. And yes, it has goodreads. Kindle store, vocabulary builder, etc.
The fire is great for night time, in the bed reading. I love the white font on black. Perfect for a dark room. It doesn’t keep me awake as much as the paperwhite, nor matter how dim you make it.
My husband has both. He prefers reading on the Paperwhite. The internet use wasn’t that great on the Kindle Fire. He finally got an IPad with the Kindle App. I also have an iPad with the Kindle App. There are less expensive tablets that would also work well with the Kindle App.
@Helen I just prefer the smaller Kindle.
“Drum Roll” ? please…………………………I bought the Paperwhite!
Thank you everyone!
@Teresa smart girl
@Brenda thank you
@Teresa I don’t think you will be disappointed. I love mine. I even read waiting in line at Wal Mart, the pharmacy, waiting for trains to pass, etc. I also read in Dr. office and hospitals, anywhere I have to wait!
@Brenda oh that’s great!!!! I’m super excited. I got the,”your order had shipped today!!! “
@Teresa let us know how much you love it.
@Brenda I will!!
I have an older Kindle, which works fine. But I mostly read on the Kindle app on my iPad because the screen is lighted. Is there a Kindle with a lighted screen?
@Susan The Paperwhite is lighted Susan, and you can raise or lower the lighting. In bed I have mine quite low. It’s nice not to have a book light. Check it on Amazon.
The new paperwhite is great! It’s lightweight and fits nicely in your hand. Watch on amazon for deals. I got mine for $49.00. It was a 24 hour sale. Fire tablets are ok, have the option of adding SD card. The battery on tablets are not nearly as long lasting as e readers.
Yes you can get on Goodreads with a Paperwhite.
