I had the same problem. I thought the writing was excellent, and I still couldn’t get into it…? I gave up on it but keep thinking I should give it another try.
I agree! And it stays with you long after you’ve finished reading it. It’s a slow moving leisurely read with such fully developed characters and gorgeous writing. One I’ll definitely re-read.
Continue. It’s comes together in the end. Even after I’d finished I noticed how his writing style and character development changed as the story progressed.
I posted a similar post and was convinced by the comments to keep going. Ended up making my all time favorites list. The comment that helped me the most was not to expect much action but to focus on the charming count.
Yes! It starts slow but gets better. Some of the excerpts were so relective and thought provoking I wanted to take a picture of them so I could enjoy them later.
I have backed off of it until I am in the mood for it. I think I will enjoy more during a less hectic time. I try not to put pressure on myself. It seems worthwhile to pick up again.
I have been listening to it on audible. I think maybe it’s more suited for reading. When listening my mind wanders because it doesn’t keep my interest.
I ended up reading and listening. Try a sample of the audiobook maybe? I found the British narrator Nicholas Guy Smith’s voice so charming and soothing — I ended up buying the audiobook (in addition to the hardcover) because I know I will want to listen to it again one day. Never done that before!
I think it is more on the “literature” side, if that makes sense. For example, if you liked The Goldfinch. Or Russian lit. Although this definitely has more humor!
It is one of my favorite all time books, but I loved it for its pure beauty. Amor Towles has such a wonderful way with words. There were lines in the book that I just read over and over. And I loved the characters.
It took me some time to get into it but I think it was worth it. I go through phases where slow building books just won’t hold my attention so I leave them for another day but I do get back to every one of them ?
I had the same problem. I thought the writing was excellent, and I still couldn’t get into it…? I gave up on it but keep thinking I should give it another try.
Yes!!!!!!!
I think it’s worth it. Loved the writing & sly humor.
Yes. There were dragging parts but the ending was worth it! ?
Yes, but it took me a minute to really get into it. I kept coming back to it.
Yes!!
It’s a slow but utterly lovely story.
It was slow at the beginning, but it is SO worth it to keep reading! One of the best books I’ve read this year!
Just finished it last night. Best book I’ve read this year! ♥️♥️♥️
I agree! And it stays with you long after you’ve finished reading it. It’s a slow moving leisurely read with such fully developed characters and gorgeous writing. One I’ll definitely re-read.
I still keep having dreams I live in the hotel with them all and I finished it a month ago?
Continue. It’s comes together in the end. Even after I’d finished I noticed how his writing style and character development changed as the story progressed.
This has been sat waiting for me to pick up for ages – just can’t decide!
One of my very favorite books ever.
Mine too.
Absolutely

Yes! It’s not a fast read, but it’s so worth it.
YES!
I concur!
Wonderful book
I couldn’t get into it either. Soooo slow. I stopped reading it
I had the same problem with his other book. Tried more than once.
Guys push through, I promise it is worth it.
I really liked it. But like is short. If you can’t then don’t.
I could not get into it either. I thought something was wrong with me because everyone loved it!
It’s so slow at the start, I almost dnfed it twice. I am so glad I didn’t, it picks up, and I ended up getting emotional at the end.
I didn’t fall in love with it until nearly the end. And then I wanted to reread it because I didn’t want it to end!! YES, keep reading!
I have that one waiting too!
NO!- but others say yes….
Yes! It starts slow but gets better. Some of the excerpts were so relective and thought provoking I wanted to take a picture of them so I could enjoy them later.
Yes!! It all comes together and it was wonderful. I want to read it again.
yes yes and yes!!!
Loved Rules of Civility but I just couldn’t get into this.
I thought it was better than Rules … it had a stronger message. I really enjoyed it and was sorry it ended.
Yes! Loved it!
I have that book. Glad to hear it’s worth sticking with!
I have backed off of it until I am in the mood for it. I think I will enjoy more during a less hectic time. I try not to put pressure on myself. It seems worthwhile to pick up again.
Hated it. Didn’t care about the characters. Made it almost halfway.
I have been listening to it on audible. I think maybe it’s more suited for reading. When listening my mind wanders because it doesn’t keep my interest.
The narrator is amazing! really brings the prose to life.
I loved it!
One of best books I’ve read.
Nope
Ditto.
Second half is better.
One of the best books I have ever read. Couldn’t put it down once I started it and did not want it to end. Love it!
I felt the same. But it is rewarding and is beautifully written. I do recommend staying with it
Was hard for me too, will try another time
Not my absolute favorite, but I did like it.
I ended up being kind of “meh” about it.
Same here
Yes I loved it.
Didn’t love it.
I also quit after 75 pages. Too many other good books I want to read.
Could not read this.
It took me forever to read the language was beautiful but difficult at times to comprehend. I finally finished it last weekend and I’m glad i did x
Loved it.
I didn’t like it either ?
I did not get into it. I did finish it…. but I felt like I was on house arrest.
Yes,yes but we all have different tastes
Yes, yes, yes.
YESSSS! I felt the same but it’s magical. Almost finished.
I’m reading it now, and I really like it. I can’t imagine listening to it, because I thinking it’s more of a savoring book.
I listened to it on my commute and thought the narrator set the tone perfectly. I agree, however, that it is a book to be savored.

Started it, but stopped. Maybe I’ll try again…

Yes!!!
Yup!
Yes! You definitely get into it once you really know the main character and what is going on with him. I found it slow in the beginning as well.
It took me a while but I stuck with it and was glad I did.
My number one book out of 65 I read in 2017.
I loved it like a slow, satisfying journey.
A huge YES!
My thought is not really. But everyone else seemed to love it but me.
Nope!
I put it down – twice.
Please give it a shot!
It is one of my favorite all time books, but I loved it for its pure beauty. Amor Towles has such a wonderful way with words. There were lines in the book that I just read over and over. And I loved the characters.
I had the same problem. Continue, You will love it!
YES! Slow start, soooooo good
Oh god yes!
I couldn’t get through it either…tried twice;(
Loved it
A very definite yes!
No!
YES!!! It was hard for me to get into also. I listened to it, though, and really started enjoying it about mid-way through.
It took me some time to get into it but I think it was worth it. I go through phases where slow building books just won’t hold my attention so I leave them for another day but I do get back to every one of them ?
I loved it
Absolutely!!! It took me three times to start but one of my very favorites ever
Not sure. I stopped halfway through it.
Yes loved it
No, I hear there’s a movie coming out. I tried to read the book, couldn’t do it.
I found it difficult to get into!
If you don’t like it, why torture yourself?
I loved it. When I finished I felt like
I had lost friends.
Loved it.
Yes!
