Is Stephen King really the best for scary?? If so what’s his best. If not then who?

Interesting.. following
Following. So far, I’ve read the outsiders, the shinning, and doctor sleep. Only one I found remotely edgy was doctor sleep. So I’m looking for other good titles of his to look into.
I’m still traumatized by Gerald’s Game.
@Katrina I watched the movie, haven’t read the book yet but I’ll def check it out!
@Katie Mind you, I read it when I was like 13 and I’m now almost 40, but certain scenes stand out in my mind so vividly, you know it’s got an impact.
@Katrina I read the stand and many others by Stephen King and I agree certain things still vivid in my mind.
I think pet cemetery is the scariest one I’ve read so far. It was horrible lol.
He’s my favorite author . You know what’s scary though , Amityville horror book scared me so bad lol
@Kayce me, too!
I had to put down several times
Yep, I was so scared!
Yeah probly even though I’ve never read his books
Dean koontz is awesome or Richard laymon xx
Used to love Richard Laymon when I was a teenager. Always reminded me of the slasher type movies I liked to watch
Stephen King’s The Shining is the scariest book I’ve led.
Did you read the 2nd book to it?
Soooooo good
Me too!!!
@Katie Not yet, but It’s getting high on the wish list.
Lars Kepler?
Pet Cemetery is a scary one too!
I only read Stephen King growing up. Pet Semetary is hands down scariest.
I have a vivid memory of reading The Shining on the school bus when I was in junior high and being terrified.??
Joe Hill is.pretty scary.
But Stephen is best
I loved misery
Hands down. Pick any one of his and you won’t be disappointed.
SALEM’S LOT traumatized me for a long time. It’s the scariest, in my opinion. I’m also difficult to please in the horror category.
Dean Koontz is great!
I’m a HUGE Stephen King fan!! I have not found a single let down (in my opinion). His book Misery was the very first novel I read ? BUT, nothing has scared me to date with any book or movie by anyone lol
A lot of his older stuff like It, Christine, Carrie, Cujo, Pet Semetary are all excellent. One that was released fairly recently The Cell is quite good. Shirley Jackson is another good horror writer
Dean Koontz, Michael Crichton, and Robin Cook are all better than SK.
Robin Cook used to be good. Now he is phoning it in and it shows.
Stephen King books are scary. I have been unnerved by a few – Cujo, From A Buick 8, Christine and Salem’s Lot .
Dean Koontz
The Talisman
John Saul is also scary
I second this! John Saul is very good! ?
I third it. I read his stuff when I was 14. HUGE mistake. I still think the Catholic church is terrifying.
My stepfather has every Stephen King book ever released. He said Bentley Little is probably scarier because he’s “really off the damn wall!” After him, he suggests reading something by Stephen King’s son whose “ghost name is Joe Hill.”
@Heather I didnt know that reading NOS4A2 right now and loving it
Absolutely loved Christine and Duma key I haven’t found a book of his I didn’t enjoy and I love his imagination the creepy or not!
I think his writing is more creepy and weird then scary personally but as far as someone who has a scary book I dont have another suggestion for you
I wouldn’t say he was scary – more creepy and strange
Darcy Coates Novels! spooky, creepy, horror ?
Pet cemetery has stayed with me forever. Scariest one of the lot x
Yeah, me too… It was the first SK book I read
King is fun! But John Saul has freaked me out much more.
Yes, John Saul is great!!
Mia Mavi he writes horror books
Dean R Koontz also delivers on many levels!
James Herbert ❤️
2 of my favorite books are
– The long walk by Stephen King
– Intensity by Dean Koontz
I’m told Velocity by Dean Koontz is good but I’ve not read it..
Not all S.K’s books are horror but most of Graham Masterton is good. Dean Koontz Twilight Eyes I loved. James Herbert The Magic Cottage. Stephen King Dr Sleep. John Saul. Some of the old horror writers like Guy N Smith. F Paul Wilson’s Nightworld. Shaun Hutson Slugs was good. Robert McCammon. Gary Brandner.
Any by William Hodgson, in particular The House on the Borderland. Truly terrifying reading. You will not be disappointed.
Is Carrie scary? I’ve never read anything by him, or any horror at all actually, and this one is in my library.
Carrie is a good horror read ?
Good to hear! The bloody cover of my edition of it is already creeping me out : D
@Ana it’s been years since I read it but just conjuring it up gives me the chills ?
:O exciting!! ☺️
No lol Stephen King is scary to people to don’t read scary books. For regulars of the horror genre, there are much better authors to scare you. Brian Keene, for example, or Shane McKenzie for decent short stories, or Bryan Smith. I’m currently reading the Sleepy Hollow series by Richard Gleaves right now, and while the first one is not outright scary yet it certainly has its creepy moments, and I’ve heard the other two or much better in that department.
Salem’s Lot was the spookiest read from King for me.
Nope, Dean Koontz can make Stephen King look like Dr. Seuss (direct quote from my grandmother, may she RIP)
Stephen king, dean koontz are my faves! Joe hill is up there with his dad too! Nos4r2 creeped me out!
He doesn’t scare me. I’m afraid horror just makes me laugh.
I love the horror genre, but similar sentiment….I don’t understand getting frightened from a story. Movie or book.
Books and movies don’t scare me…my imagination while reading a “scary” book is terrifying tho. Read The Stand by SK.
I am a big Stephen King fan. Love his books. Some others I think are scary are:
Joe Hill (Heart Shaped Box); John Saul (I like his earlier books) but the scariest stuff to read I think are true crime stories. Nothing scarier than those.
Check out Seven -X by Mike Welch….I’m not into scary books and that one scared me…
James Herbert
No one writer is “best” for all readers.
any of his books is cringe worthy
Graham Masterton!!!?
Dean Koontz
Koontz
Cathy Speight – people who laugh at horror often don’t like to admit to themselves or others that it’s actually scary so they laugh instead to hide their fear .
Following. I’ve tried King and Koonzt and I often find myself really bored while reading. I absolutely love horror/thriller movies but have never found a book that gives me the same feelings ?♀️
Darn. I’m going to try pet cemetary
@Christine It’s a good book. Probably one of the ones from King I liked well enough. But I just didn’t get the vibe I was looking for from it. I think you should still give it a go.
Salem’s Lot did it for me….it was SK 1st for me….still my best…
I like Nick Cutter? start with The Deep. It’s INSANE!
I have the troop by him waiting to read it next
I like King and Koontz.
Try Jonathan Maberry.
F
.
It is an awesome book.
My “old school” horror includes King, Koontz and John Saul. I really enjoy Bentley Little as well.
Christine is the best, naturally…
Karin Slaughter always proves to be a great thriller. Pretty Girls is one of the best books I’ve ever read. B. A. Paris is another great thriller author. Behind Closed Doors is my favorite. Ooohh and The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware!
@Kylie I just finished The Lying Game by Ruth Ware. I’m hooked now!
@Love I’ve been wanting to read that one! I loved The Woman in Cabin 10, so I tried In a Dark, Dark Wood and was disappointed. Felt like I was reading a new (and inexperienced :/) author. I’ve only heard good things about The Lying Game though!
@Kylie I think I just received a copy Dark Dark Wood from a co-worker. I leave books from co workers at work so I’m not tempted to start yet ANOTHER book!
I read Gerald’s game last year it was great
I hated Gerald’s Game. Read 3/4 of it and threw it in the trash.
Your opinion
Tom Tryon and Harvest Home.
i love the shining! an pet Cemetery
The Shining and the Stand.. best ever
Try to find some Phil Rickman. Stephen King himself says he finds Rickman to be the best thing he’s seen in a long time; very different and “scary as hell”. And it IS. I really liked “Curfew”—-I’m a big ol’ horror fan, and this thing scared me silly. Also look for “Candlenight” and “December”…”Bones of Avalon” is a historical horror story about finding the bones of King Arthur—it’s actually based on real people and events.
Also, an oldie but goodie: Ghost Story by Peter Straub. I re-read it recently after 30+ years and it still kept me awake!
The Stand amazing book
It and Pet Sematary
M.K. Sherlock
Pet Sematary for scary.
