A book called ‘They Thirst’ by Robert McCammon. when I was in my early 20’s … It’s a vampire type book but, in the early 80’s, vampires weren’t portrayed as the ‘sparkly’ type that they are today ! Frightened the bejaysus out of me !
Salems Lot was mine. But going to check The Thirst..sounds really good..love vampire books that aren’t love stories, well then again Dracula was a love story and scary as hell.
Technically The Green Ribbon. It was one of several short stories in A Dark Dark Room by Alvin Schwartz. (I was so young ?)I tend to shy away away from Horror books because I think real life is scary enough, but more recently I finished Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King which oddly enough is also 3 short stories.
Oh my gosh The Surgeon and The Apprentice both by Tess Gerritsen. Terrified me so much I made up some excuse to go see my parents and stay with them for the night lol
Yes, it was so scary it was horrid. But for sneaky, really tricky and cagey story telling, you can’t beat Tom Tryons, Harvest Home. I’ve read all of Kings books, and horror was my favorite genre for years. And still. Harvest Home sends chills up my spine.
I loved the Twilight series. The film of the last book, did confuse me at first when I saw it, because I completely forgot it was Alice’s vision. So much, happened so fast in that last film I was as the Brits say, knackered when it was over. Love it!
Mäde de Lapointe , I haven’t read much of her other work, but highly recommend We Have Always Lived In The Castle. It has been one of my favorites for years 🙂
Thank you everyone. Seems to be a lot of Stephen king books in there. I used to read him as a teenager. I never got through IT. I might give that another go. I did look for Amityville on Apple books but can’t find it. Does anyone know where I would find it?
@Krystal I got a copy off of our local library a few years ago. I think it might be hard to get because publication went down after it was admitted to being a hoax. Good luck. There is a really spooky book on Kindle Unlimited that I read… actually two. I will check my Kindle to see what they were when I get home. I definitely know they would be available as an ebook 🙂
@Krystal no problem. Devil’s Island by Mark Lukens (his stuff can get nasty, crazy, freaky), and Within These Walls by Ania Ahlborn (more freaky). I didn’t put these in the original comments because they aren’t the scariest books I have ever read, but definitely some of the scariest contemporary fiction I have read. If you want some other authors I have a couple. Don’t hesitate to message me if you want ideas in the future. Have a wonderful evening 🙂

Something by Dean Koontz. I don’t have a specific title, they are all scary at some point, some more than others.
I used to read those books but started to think there’s something wrong with someone who can come up with stories like that.
@Tracy true enough, except Dean seems to be an awesome person
Maybe but takes you to some dark , disturbing places. ?
Helter Skelter, about the Manson gang and their murders.
Tommyknockers by Stephen king.
