@Kathy Ah, didn’t know ‘Hurt’ was a gal (not that it matters). It’s been a long, long time ago, but I’ve seen some of the old-school females interviewed (being serious). It’s kind of like Pro-Wrestling. It may not exactly be ‘real,’ but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a lot of work or that you can’t get seriously hurt. See my ‘homage’ to Joanie Weston, below (who’s most common nickname was actually, “The Blonde Bomber”).
this is the new derby, mostly women ( but not all ) mostly flat track vs the banked track of old. It isn’t the staged derby that I grew up watching on TV. side note – I’m currently re-reading ‘Breakfast of Champions’ in which KV Jr mentions roller derby.
Kathy Mary I’m a book collector (hardback, 1st Printings) and look for his novels on-the-cheap (since I’m currently not working). However, his older stuff rarely pops-up at Half Price Books or other used-book stores. I read “Sirens of Titan” and “Cat’s Cradle” when I was in high school (many years ago). I’ve never got around to “Slaughterhouse-Five” (sacrilege!), but I’m just not sure about “BoC.” The roller derby thing sounds very familiar, but my memory (which was excellent, O.U.A.T) has been rapidly deserting me over the last 20 yrs. Problem is that I’ve read too many ‘snippets’ of his stuff over this period of tme. Lastly, I know nothing about the modern roller derby, you speak of.
