The musical is a classic! Do not be ashamed. It was why I read the book in the first place. I liked Phantom by Susan Kay much better than Gaston Leroux’s version. It expanded on what he created significantly and my teen self was in love with the phantom.
I read and enjoyed it. There is also a sequel set in modern times. It’s called The Phantom of Manhattan. It’s premise is Eric lives and what happens next.
I have. I had watched the movie from 2004 and loved it, so I read the book. I was kind of disappointed when I learned the movie was based on the musical and not the book and there were many differences.
yup, loved it, love the musical, and loved Phantom by Susan Kay, she wrote about the Phantom’s birth, childhood and growing up and created a moving history of this character, read that when I was 16..I was obsessed with Phantom of the Opera.
If you enjoyed the original, you might also like the novel “Phantom”, by a writer named Susan(?) Kay, her book goes into a little more detail about the life of ‘Eric’ before the events of Leroux’s’ Phantom of the Opera’. It’s an interesting Companion piece.
I enjoyed it when I was a teenager. I need to go back and reread it.
I know it’s probably terrible, but I really preferred the musical – the one with Gerard Butler.

My thoughts exactly!
But I didn’t know about the “Phantom ” by Susan Kay. I guess I found my next read. Thank you @Melissa :))
I loved the movie!
@Nevena, it’s great but be prepared for a sad and dark tale. Poor Erik. I always did love a villain that could make me sympathize.
So basically this still applies 😀

Yes! I just finished it and I loved it.
Read it and it was ok. I prefer the musical; but that’s just me.?

Yup! Actually liked the movie a bit better because I saw it before reading the book, and I loved Meg.
Did not enjoy the book half as much as the musical… was so dark and scary and chaotic
Once, a long time ago. I liked it.
Read it, enjoyed it, and used it for a college paper on abandonment. I got an A.
I have it but yet to read, must get to it after seeing this x

Oh I love Phantom.! Really good book. ❤️
I’ve read the B&N translation, tossed it and purchased a better translation. Looking forward to reading it. =)
