Classical music and jazz. Music with lyrics interferes and rap is like listening to a audio book so I need my whole brain, Jazz and classical music are nice background music. Coltrane, miles Davis etc Bach, Mozart, Chopin. No opera, too much text, too dramatic. But I don’t often read and Listen to music at the same time.
I’ve become good at blocking out noises around me so it doesn’t affect me, but if I’m going to sit down to dedicate time to reading I’ll occasionally put on music in accordance with whatever I’m reading. I read a novel based in the 60s recently and playing some oldies really did make me feel more into the story. Doesn’t always work though! Lol
@Rita oh what’s your secret? I can’t zone anything out as I am noise intolerant and can’t even stand the sound of coughing, sneezing or people wearing coats among other things and even worse, conversations so I can’t read n public without my trusty earplugs!
I have pretty much dedicated my life to music, and it completely arrests my attention when trying to read. Even hearing the ice cream truck somewhere on the next block makes it impossible for me to focus on reading!
It should be. The best rappers are masters of the spoken word and books are written words. So where’s the big difference. Problem is … if i listen to the Roots, Tupac or Kendrick Lamar, I listen to them and forget about my book.
Sean Gallagher I think it’s amazing how they pronounce words to keep the flow, so I study their vocal techniques. They have to learn to breath like trumpet and saxophone players I learned.
Sean Gallagher yes that too. Eminem studied the dictionary every day as a kid and learned to rhyme everything. Sometimes by pronouncing words in a certain way. they reference and abbreviate so much stuff I have to look it up. And they use metaphor quite a lot.
Sean Gallagher my fav of all time is Tupac bc of his lyrics and strong voice, tupac educated us, but Eminem is just great, I agree, his rhymes are unparalleled. He burst on the music scene and everyone was spellbound.
I usually don’t have music on when I’m reading but I do have at times the baseball game on, because it’s calming when the volume is turned down sort of low!

@Kristen no, me neither!
Classical if anything, but I prefer silence.
I don’t usually play music while I read. But I do enjoy the white noise of a fan or rain in the background occasionally.
Beth:
I agree. I like the air purifier sound. Just enough to block unpleasant noise.
White noise…
No music. Just complete silence.

The ice cream truck would have my attention as well, Chris! Haha!
Classic lit and a bit of rap ?? not something that’s regularly combined lol

Kristen Sunny good point ? I end up reading to the beat ?
Sean Gallagher I think it’s amazing how they pronounce words to keep the flow, so I study their vocal techniques. They have to learn to breath like trumpet and saxophone players I learned.
Kristen Sunny some of there word play is very good.
Sean Gallagher yes that too. Eminem studied the dictionary every day as a kid and learned to rhyme everything. Sometimes by pronouncing words in a certain way. they reference and abbreviate so much stuff I have to look it up. And they use metaphor quite a lot.
Kristen Sunny Eminem is my favourite to listen too, I think he’s the best at manipulating his words , must be because of what you have said above.
Sean Gallagher my fav of all time is Tupac bc of his lyrics and strong voice, tupac educated us, but Eminem is just great, I agree, his rhymes are unparalleled. He burst on the music scene and everyone was spellbound.
Usually nothing but classical if it isn’t too intense.

GO RED SOX!
French songs
This may sound weird but I play Lana del Rey albums when reading. 🙂
She has a relaxing sound
Music distracts me too much, but I do like listening to the rain.
@Notinuse so do I, kind of calming!
Listen to the sound of SILENCE!
Heart of a child.. It’s instrumental without lyrics.. I hear it over and over again
Slow country
Chopin or ambient music.
Sometimes I just put the TV on and turn.off tbe sound when I’m reading
Silence!
I usually find music distracting when reading. I do have an album called Jazz for Booklovers, which is ok.
Classical.
I like to read in silence. Use to it didn’t matter but as I get older I enjoy reading in the quiet!!
I prefer to read in a quiet, secluded area, with little distractions.
Same here, but without the little distractions.
None!!!
same here! who needs music?
Nothing… It distracts my concentration
I leave the video on the TV, but turn.off the audio.
Can’t stand ANY sound when i am reading! Got to be Monastic Silence which is why I can’t read in our Library without my Earp!ugs!!
