Hey guys! Do you think that listening to recorded books have the same benefits as physically reading books?

I love both. Audiobooks for walking and keeping me sane during house chores and watching my son at the playground, books for bed and sofa, kindle for holidays to save on packing!
Completely agree. Also great for long car rides!
@Jane oh yes I forgot about the car! Always have an audiobook on the way to work ?
Yes, and there have been studies that prove it. 🙂
Do you possibly have the links to the studies?
No, it’s just something I saw on facebook or something a while back. 😛 But it has to be true since it was on the internet, right?
Try googling “are audio books just as good as reading” there are a bunch of articles from reputable sources. 🙂
@Mike awesome I’m gonna go do that right now
I m practice for becoming a narrator!!!????
100% yes!
You still know what happened by the end of the book. I listen to mine all the time. Everyone always thinks I’m listening to music when I’m out jogging lol but I’m multitasking and “reading” at the same time ?
You can’t easily read a physical book and do the dishes either ?
Yup it makes chores sooo much easier ?
I cannot chore without an audio book. I can almost recite chapters of American Gods
@Aikatryn oh I have that one packed away at the moment unread. So it’s good?
Stop everything you doing right now. Go to YouTube and search American Gods audiobook anniversary edition. You should be able at least get the first chapter. 5 years ago, it was available cover to cover. But with the show out now, I’ve noticed YouTube only has bits and pieces. Also, Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is good too.
Oh I didn’t know there was a show! It’s been pushed up my tbr list haha.
It’s on starz. It’s a good parallel to the book. One won’t ruin the other
Depends on the person I don’t mind audio books but a book sticks with me more if I read but my boyfriend is the it be way around
Yes
Sometimes better
I would think so. I listen all day between farm calls and it certainly keeps me sane!
What farm call? Like chicken and cows!! ?
I’m a veterinarian. So yes – mostly cows though.
@Emily that’s awesome! I thought you meant phone calls
I doubt it, but it’s nice for a change.
Yes
One of the ladies I work with was a literature teacher/reading teacher and I asked her the same thing. She said there is no difference mentally and learning wise the only downfall is that you may become a slower reader with actual books but I have not found that. I will say but brain processes the book differently for sure in the sense that audiobooks let my imagination run a little wilder!!!
Love this❤️
My imagination likes it better w a physical book more so than an audiobook but audiobooks allow me to get through a book while driving and doing chores so I can at least “read” a book during the school semester. Books also let me make the voices which I like doing ☺️
nope … you can stop to think about what you read. on top of that, the audiobook reader reads it the way they understand it … reading it our your own you can understand it the way you see it in your mind without someone emphasizing words to draw them to your point of view.
I like to listen to books while driving
I have a much harder time following and retaining them personally
I’m the exact opposite! My mind kept wondering off while actually reading so I started audiobooks and it’s been so much better for me!
It’s not so much while I am listening but obviously I can’t listen to a whole book in one day so the next day when I start listening again I might as well just start over since I can’t remember anything from the previous day
Yes but they both have different benefits as well. There is something very powerful about spoken word.
I’m more involved with it when I read.
No, not really. When you read you get to give life and color and voice to the characters. When an actor reads, you listen to his representation, he portrays the characters any way he sees fit and hands the world and all in it, ready for you.
Not for me. Narrators often use the wrong intonation or have an annoying accent. Far too slow listening to a book. Just makes me grumpy and I end up disliking a book that I might otherwise really enjoy.
Yes. With the right narrator. I am dyslexic so my only real option. But personally i disagree with a lot of these comments. I’m choosy about who I will listen to but when I find the right one, I think its better.
I would rather read a book as I always lose concentration when listening to audio. Never do that with a book
Depends on you and your mood. Sometimes I can listen to an audiobook and enjoy the story… Other times I’ll space out and rewind over and over until I give up on the audiobook and either read the actual book or try a different audiobook or nothing at all for awhile.
I love being read to. I read when I’m trying to relax; I listen to audio books while I’m trying to accomplish things. It’s a great way to time things as well. Work out for one chapter a day, until you can do two chapters. You can race a chapter while doing chores; I often bet myself I can finish doing something before the next chapter starts.
Lately I’ve gotten frustrated that my favorite author doesn’t gave any more novels out that I haven’t read, so I looked into his favorite author and found one series has 39 books, and two made for tv specials. My summer is going to be rit!
I think sometimes, it’s way better!!
I don’t connect with audio in the same way as I do a physical books same reason I don’t own a kindle, for me the experience is wrapped up in the paper
I cant do it. i have audible ADD. lol. even when someone is speaking to me I sometimes zone out. also watching tv. i suddenly realize i didnt hear last 10 minutes.. dvr is my best friend.
Depends on the story honestly.
I am not a big fan of audio books. I like imagining my own voices for each character in my head and it feels odd when I’m listening to someone else do that. I also have 2 young kids and if I did audio I’d have to use headphone and they would silently destroy my house.
