I have trouble if my husband is watching tv because he has a habit of turning the volume up higher instead of asking the kids to quiet down or play in the other room, so then the kids get louder to hear each other over the tv….. And so forth. It gets really loud really fast
I turn off chat heads in messenger settings while reading in Kindle and set my notifications to “do not disturb” so stuff doesn’t pop up over my book. Obviously idk what kind of device you use but hopefully yours have similar options! Too me a while to find mine but it was driving me crazy!
I’d imagine. Often, I stay away from the subjects of my depression . . .then other times? I just dive in . . . none of it’s right, none of it’s wrong . . . I feel for ya . . . wish I could help.
Continue that mode . . . admire your b/f for caring . . . and write write write . . . someday . . . we’ll all be reading you . . .promise . . . smilin’ . .. I’m not good at this . . . but keep your chin up kiddo . . . it get’s better!
When I’m so tired I can’t keep my eyes open. Sometimes I’ll try so hard I end up reading the same line a dozen times before I give up and put the book down. Lol
Outside relaxing on your porch in the cool evening air, without warning a swarm of mosquitos descends upon your solitude of reading leaving you to retreat from the blood-sucking horde.
@Nichole-Cody I can understand. When my wife went through mastectomy I could not read for months. She survived and is fully normal and I am reading now. Often reading helped me maintain a balance after the initial trauma.
@Michael I was studying the original Peter Pan story for my own book I am writing. I might have told her it was research, but I don’t remember if I mentioned that or not. It was a couple of months ago now.
Tv or music too loud for me to isolate my reading mind from what I’m hearing. People who keep asking questions so that I can’t concentrate on the book…
I know what you mean. I lost my grandparents a day apart from each other in 2008. My grandpa died Easter Sunday and my grandma the next day. My grandpa’s death was unexpected though.
The only thing that distracts me from reading is music with lyrics, cause I can’t help singing along, but anything at all, or even nothing, will distract me from an audio book… I can’t seem to help tuning it out after a little while!!
I don’t know…my parents used to swear that the house could burn down around me and I’d sit there with my hand up saying “just one more minute, mom!”!!!! ?
While people are being noisy.
When I have a migraine
In a moving vehicle. Instant headache.
When my boyfriends playing games with his friend on the other side of the room
When the TV is on
I’m the same way, can’t focus for the life of me if the tv is on while I’m reading
When someone keeps talking to me.
hahahahaha yeah
When my eyes can’t focus, like right now, I would rather be reading but seeing the words is a struggle. ?
Yes, I wish didn’t require so much sleep either or run errands.
When I’m very stressed out
When the TV is on, especially when my husband flips through channels
When my chatterbox goddaughter is with me ?
Loud talkers, on phones or in person.
When someone is gossiping or telling an interesting story
when the pets need attention.
I can’t concentrate if there’s any loud noises. If there’s any loud noises going on I have to listen to audiobooks!
Trying to read in my house pretty much everyday.
When the Buckeyes are playing ?
Toothache
I can tune anything or anyone out!
When someone won’t. stop. TALKING.
A nuclear war.
EMP
when i’ve got depression brain
When someone keeps talking/interrupting me
When my granddaughter (20 mos) wants me to read to her! I just have to indulge….
Migraine
Anywhere in public where it’s noisy
People yelling.
People talking on the phone (if reading at Drs office, etc) My kids annoying me (or husband) LOL
My divorce
I have trouble if my husband is watching tv because he has a habit of turning the volume up higher instead of asking the kids to quiet down or play in the other room, so then the kids get louder to hear each other over the tv….. And so forth. It gets really loud really fast
When someone talking to me while im trying to read
Children fighting
I turn off chat heads in messenger settings while reading in Kindle and set my notifications to “do not disturb” so stuff doesn’t pop up over my book. Obviously idk what kind of device you use but hopefully yours have similar options! Too me a while to find mine but it was driving me crazy!
Migraine/people talking to me while I’m trying to read.
“it’s Daniel tigers neighborhood, the land of make believe. Won’t you ride along with me? Riiiide along!” ?? that really gets me lol
But with a good gripping book I can probably tune out most anything.
I worked with children in the autism spectrum for 7 years. After learning to tune out tantrums I can ignore pretty much anything when I’m reading.
People. Go away people. 😉
People blathering at me. It actually really makes me mad.
Blathering blatherskite! Lol
Depression
I have typically found . . . reading helps me those years. 😉
It really depends on the severity. Like tonight I’m having the hardest time doing anything
I’d imagine. Often, I stay away from the subjects of my depression . . .then other times? I just dive in . . . none of it’s right, none of it’s wrong . . . I feel for ya . . . wish I could help.
Thank you. I appreciate knowing im not alone. I am the same way i dont usually talk about it
@Hailey Sometimes it’s just good to type it and put it to words . . . do you have medical or family support?
I dont have either. I have a boyfriend who is as caring as can be but that is about where it stops. I write a lot. Im trying to write my book
Continue that mode . . . admire your b/f for caring . . . and write write write . . . someday . . . we’ll all be reading you . . .promise . . . smilin’ . .. I’m not good at this . . . but keep your chin up kiddo . . . it get’s better!
I typically listen to Christian music during those bouts of depression. Takes a few songs, but I bounce back.
Too much background noise. I love alone time with a book
Coworkers insisting on talking to me during lunch
When anyone demands your attention when you are not working.
My heart being broken
I listen to uplifting music like Christian music during those times.
New job!
Dental surgery
Wouldn’t mind time freezing when people are ranting. Lol
Migraine
Wicked sick
Making whoppee?
Job
If I am not in complete silence no tv no music just peace and quiet
Peace and quiet at home, what’s that?! Lol
Well my kids are grown so it’s just me and my two cats so at this stage in my life I have peace and quiet that was not always the case ☺
@Melissa I would like to know what that is also….
When I’m so tired I can’t keep my eyes open. Sometimes I’ll try so hard I end up reading the same line a dozen times before I give up and put the book down. Lol
Nod off, wake briefly, nod off again.
I’ve never had one
Toddler/kids/puppies running around
Outside relaxing on your porch in the cool evening air, without warning a swarm of mosquitos descends upon your solitude of reading leaving you to retreat from the blood-sucking horde.
Stress
When any of my family is not doing well.
I 100% agree with this. My mother in law has not been doing well lately and I havent been able to concentrate on a book in weeks.
@Nichole-Cody I can understand. When my wife went through mastectomy I could not read for months. She survived and is fully normal and I am reading now. Often reading helped me maintain a balance after the initial trauma.
When I’m stressed out !!!
Watching tv
When I’m asleep.
Skydiving
Not skydiving, but at one point she is reading in a rocking chair on her descent.
Migraine
When my chronic fatigue sets in
My husband turning the TV on
Good song on the radio
On a normal lunch break at work … they’re too short and you’re always watching the clock.
People asking questions about your book OR people who say “God stop being anti-social”
Went to a baby shower and during the eating portion of the baby shower someone told me to put away my book. That irked me.
@Melissa in situations like that, i would make sure the book was themed – then all I have to say is “research”
She wanted me too talk, but I am not a talkative person.
Then people have to respect that
@Michael I was studying the original Peter Pan story for my own book I am writing. I might have told her it was research, but I don’t remember if I mentioned that or not. It was a couple of months ago now.
Driving
Dead in the family
When people are trying to talk to me. Stress. Headaches
Readers block!
Never knew there was such a thing. You just coined a new term.
What is characterized by? Lol
When i couldn,t concentrate on reading or listening to a book, my friends told me that i was having a readers block.
@Nasir gotcha!
emotionally not fine
When I’m on the bus or car and there’s either talking or music on or someone watching something that has talking in it. It’s very distracting!
I can’t read if the tv is on, if anyone is playing music or talking in my vicinity. White noise is fine but I prefer silence.
Also I can’t read in the car as I get travel sickness when reading too much.
If my mobile phone is within reach, too distracting. Keep looking to see what everyone else is reading ??
When my kids are around ?
Airport departure lounges, train stations, anywhere busy and noisy really.
Stress/ anxiety ?
Anywhere with a clock which is non-digital
I hate any incessant noise that is repetitive. Drives me nuts. Broke my pink alarm clock hating it. Lol
Hahaha I’m the same I have to take batteries out and ask oeope. To stop chewing
Drives me crazy
People talking around you and loud music outside continously
Yes, esp. The ones who drive by slowly with so much bass from their car speakers. No one is impressed, just annoyed.
During sex
When the tv is on. I like peace, no noise in the background.
My partner playing a game with his friends in the other room on voice chat to them. The fucker shouts so loud and his laugh is so distracting!!!
Distracted noise
weird and irritating noise or when my mind is more creative than the book (thinking about far more interesting things at that moment)
Food
while driving.
Right now, I’m reading Black Creek Crossing until my Aunt opened the TV and put the channel to a Singing Competition. I want to swear so bad!
I can’t concentrate on anything when someone’s talking of when a TV’s on. I mean, I can’t even tie shoelaces when people are talking.
I am babysitting my granddaughter.
When my child is nearby.
my anxiety is up
TV and someone trying to talk to me.
Tv or music too loud for me to isolate my reading mind from what I’m hearing. People who keep asking questions so that I can’t concentrate on the book…
Yes, someone seems to always want my attention.
I can block out the rest of the world for a good book.
Whenever my brain runs a mile a minute.
Loud noise
Anxiety attacks
When I know I’ve got important work stuff to do
If major things are going on my head wonders. I went through a tuff year last. A year of a reading slump due to grief of losing my grandparents
I know what you mean. I lost my grandparents a day apart from each other in 2008. My grandpa died Easter Sunday and my grandma the next day. My grandpa’s death was unexpected though.
Sorry for your loss.
Thank you! I lost my Grandma Dec 7 and my Grandpa Dec 17 of 2016.
Extreme stress!
When one fly is landing on you and you can’t get it!
I like to read in silence.
When I can hear a child screaming for something
People talking
The only thing that distracts me from reading is music with lyrics, cause I can’t help singing along, but anything at all, or even nothing, will distract me from an audio book… I can’t seem to help tuning it out after a little while!!
When the house is on fire.
I don’t know…my parents used to swear that the house could burn down around me and I’d sit there with my hand up saying “just one more minute, mom!”!!!! ?
Listening to music while reading
Like … right now. Somewhere a truck is reversing beep beep beep beep …
Somewhere in Puerto Rico there is the sound of
Ko-kees’ croaking. Took a while for me to get used to the sound while I was there.
http://www.anthropocenemagazine.org/2016/10/the-strange-case-of-the-puerto-rican-frog/
The sound they emit literally sounds like them saying, Ko-kee. Lol
That’s funny ?
Stress!!!!!!
