What is your thoughtsabout Gone Girl? I did love the movie, but can’t get into book
Gone Girl…..
I have tried reading it and listening to the audio book, and I just can’t get into it. I did love the movie.
If you have read it, what is your thoughts?!
Enjoyed the movie, that book not so much, but I stuck it out.
I hated all of the characters in Gone Girl; made it difficult to enjoy as well.
I loved the unreliable narrator
Kept me guessing but, I read it before the movie.
Loved the book but I don’t imagine it would be as impactful if I had already seen the movie
I liked the book better but maybe it was because I read it first.
I thought it was predictable, and very overhyped. Now, when I see “The next Gone Girl” in a blurb, I don’t want to read it. Ridiculous people doing ridiculous things and ridiculous cops who are clueless. Movie was marginally better. I seriously have no idea how this book is so well liked.
I hated it. I read it thru tho. That was the last time I do it tho. If it doesn’t grab me in 1st 100 pages I’m done
It was very overhyped and it is the only book I’ve actually ever thrown across the room when I got to the end. I was so angry I wasted my time because it was so predictable.
Did not finish it
I liked the book *and* the movie!!
I did not care for it. I think because I could or did not like a single character in the book. No empathy for any one. I feel they deserved each other.
Did not like it at all.
Finish it but struggled
I wanted to like the book also, and just couldn’t. Still haven’t seen the movie.
Loved all her books. Loved the movie Gone Girl too!
Didn’t like it
I agree. I wouldn’t have finished it except it was chosen by my bookclub.
Book and movie were both equally “ok-ish” but neither were great, in my opinion.
That book has resonated with me for so long because I struggled to believe that people could be so evil and conniving.
That was my problem too. I do not like a book when evil wins. It really upsets me. Her writing sucks you in but you really wish you had never read it at the end.
How I also felt after reading…all the ugly and wonderful things by Bryn Greenwood
I liked it, but I read it with a book club that stopped halfway through because they were mad at the husband. I. Was so mad ?- they didn’t read the book, so they couldn’t grasp the whole story!
I like it also. Not my favorite book, but I definitely liked it. Psychological thrillers/suspense are my thing.
Loved it. Read it in one sitting. Not everyone’s cup of tea, though.
Just wasn’t interested in either
I don’t like her writing style. I read her other books and did not like them. Then Gone Girl came out and everybody raved so I felt like I had to read it (I worked in a bookstore and EVERYONE was talking about) and I did not like it. The only reason I watched the movie was bc it was playing on a plane. I have very strong feelings about this apparently and they aren’t very good ones.
Loved the book, hated the main character, but that’s what made it not the “happily ever after” that I expected! Boom!
Meh…
I never actually got into gone girl, I did enjoy the movie though.
Her other book, dark places I loved a lot
Didn’t like it
I agree. Bad people doing bad things to each other just doesn’t appeal to me.
I liked it! I was recovering from surgery so I finished it pretty quickly. You probably didn’t like the characters!! I can see it!
I didn’t care for the book, liked the movie even less.
Yup, movie was great
Well played the role of bad n Clever woman,
I think I’m in the minority, but I loved the book! I listened to it, so maybe it was the readers who drew me in. Enjoyed the movie also.
I had to stop before I finished it. I hated it
I didn’t care for it…too hyped up. But I’ve read her other books and they were very good.
Worst book ever
Loved the book and then the movie.
It took me a long time to get into it. The end was very good though. I would almost say worth it.
Hated it. Book and movie both.
I liked it
Hated it. A despicable book about despicable people doing despicable things to one another.
I actually really enjoyed it. I had a hard time putting the book down. Haven’t seen the movie yet but plan to eventually
Couldn’t get into it either thought it was only me
Felt the same about book, badly wanted to read before movie, but hated it. Loved the movie though
Loved the movie, hated the book! lol
Hated it. Resented the time wasted by reading it. Haven’t seen the movie.
I love clever villains and Gone Girl delivers. Frank Underwood is my favorite villain. Hugh Laurie in the Night Manager is great evil, too. They must be REALLY clever.
Really didn’t like the book. Didn’t like the characters
Didn’t finish it. Seems like I heard it compared to The Girl on the Train. Didn’t care for it much. Agree if somebody compares a book to either of those I won’t be reading it.
Loved both.
I guess I prefer something that moves a little faster.
I read Girl on the Train….didnt hate it, didnt love it.
I liked it, but didn’t care for the ending.
don’t waste your time
I listened to it while driving. The ending made me mad.
The unexpected twists and turns in the plot are part of what make it compelling. If you’ve already seen the movie, it would lack the element of surprise and might not be as enjoyable to read
I haven’t, it doesn’t appeal to me. But if you have tried and can’t get into it, I think you should move on to something else.
A complete waste of time and a terrible, terrible book.
It takes a few chapters to get into then its great x
Loved the book, liked the movie and her other books are WAY BETTER
Maybe I will give them a try.
I think once you know the twist, the book doesn’t hold enough “charge” to be interesting.
Loved the book. Watched the movie like a year later and liked it too.
Don’t bother
Too many other great books out there
I really liked it! Was almost surprised how much I did.
For me, I need at least one main character I care about. A sociopath and a namby-pamby cad just don’t intrigue me.
I enjoyed reading the book. When I would put it down, it kept me coming back to finish.
Book was hard to read but the movie was very good.
Plot okay but no characters I cared about.
Great comment – every one in that book was distasteful and manipulative.
I just can’t like a book if I don’t care about any of the characters!
Loved the book and the movie!
Thoroughly disgusting book!
I liked it – it was so different and unexpected.
It really got me and that takes a bit. Loved the movie too!
Hated that book. It started the trend of the unreliable narrators…the worst trope ever.
I loved the book.. I saw the movie first and the book gave me a better insight of the brains of these two derailed people
I actually liked the author’s other 2 books (2? Might be more by now?) a lot more
I loved it. The book sucked me in from the very first page.
I read the book and did not see the movie because I disliked the book so much.
I hated it.
I so loved it, I know how you feel I trying to get through ove
Not worth it IMHO
Have been on this site for several months now, and the two most discussed books on it, I think, have been “A Man Called Ove” and “Gone Girl”. If I ever write a book, I would like it to be as ‘discussed’ as these two. To me that is success.
Gone Girl left me empty, regretting the time I’ll never get back reading it.
Read the book. Hated it. Watched the movie and loved it. So gave it a listen on audio and loved it.
I didn’t like it, stopped in chapter 3.

I saw the movie first and just couldn’t get into the book. I love Gillian Flynn’s other books though…couldn’t put them down
Read book first … much preferred it to the film x
I’ll watch the film. I didn’t like the book, or rather I didn’t like any of the characters in the book
Absolutely agree @Peg. I enjoyed the book in the sense of it being an easy page-turning type read … great for a beach read or a one-sitting read. The characters were just hideous … no-one to like or feel sympathy for or empathy with.
Read it and at the end decided I completely disliked it. No likable characters at all.
I didn’t like the book, put it down after 30 pages or so. Wasn’t interested in the movie.
Loved the book.
