I see chick lit as more romance based. There are some women’s fiction that doesn’t necessarily have a happy ending because of a man. I like Catherine @Catherine‘s books because they’re more Women’s fiction (or sometimes male characters). Not that I don’t adore a well written girl-gets-boy story (as long as the sex scenes aren’t too over the top).
I’m reading one of Catherine’s male based books now. Worthy, is a wonderful story but then again I haven’t found one of Catherine’s books that I don’t like. JMO
Ok, I was confused because I’m reading “Take me with you” that I think is a male based book. “Worthy” that I’m listening to while sewing could be male and female based. I finished it tonight and loved it also.
I think of chick-lit as more surface level. It’s fairly predictable and that’s why we love it! Women’s fiction has deeper themes, more to the conflict than love-maybe family struggles, life decisions, etc…the guy is nice, but he’s not the focus, he’s an accessory. In chick-lit, the guy is the focus.
Chick-Lit has more humor and high jinx on the lighter side of romance. Women’s literature is more about serious, intense subjects and emotional journeys.
I think of it this way: Chick Lit can be more self facing, for shallower concerns. Women’s Fiction can be more universal in what it deals with,Deeper issues.
I see chick lit as The Devil Wears Prada, the Sophie Kinsella series, Bridget Jones, etc. I have enjoyed all of those books. I see women’s fiction as having more “life” subjects, real problems that real women go through. Not light, but still humorous sometimes. There CAN be a romantic element, but it’s about a woman’s journey, and that journey is often messy, painful, difficult, filled with friendships and family and all the problems those relationships involve…and all the beauty of life.
For me , the characters in chick lit are younger , just starting in their careers , and most often have not had kids yet. Women’s fiction is a version of joke I once heard about marriage , monogamy and minivans. These women have kids are possibly divorced , and are often re entering the work force . Subtle affairs are often involved.
I guess I always thought no difference.

Absolutely agree. I am a big fan of both, depending on my mood.
