@Kandi I gave my book to friend who has started and stopped a few times. I keep telling her to forge on!! Now that there’s talks of a movie I want to read it again.
Yes. Agree ?. I actually took out twice from library cause I couldn’t get into first time, but once I carried on, I ended up thinking it was a beautifully written period story and one of my favorite books read last year.
I just bought that at a goodwill bookstore & have heard that from so many people. How long does it usually take for the books to get good? The first 50 or 100 pages?
I had trouble getting into the Crimson Petal and the White (I tried at least five times before I got into the meat of it). It’s now one of my favourite books.
The Crimson Petal and the White is literally the only book I have ever read where I hated the ending so much that I’m actually angry that I wasted so much time reading it.
this ended up being one of my all time favorites but took me a long time to get into, I started it because Nora Ephron talked about it being one of her favorites in a memoir
Agree! It has what I call a “Gone with the Wind” beginning… super hard to get into it, but once you’re about 5 – 10 pages in, you can’t put it down. And both are 2 of my favorite books!
I actually started the series when it came out in the late nineties. I have been reading the books as they have been published. I have not been overly disappointed in the series, I think they’re trying to keep it as true to the books as possible, and there are so many side stories! If I look at it separately, I love the series. But the books will always be my 1st love…
So what everyone’s saying about outlander is that it’s worth it once your into it! That’s reassuring! I just bought the book, but have heard that it can be taxing at first! How many are in the series? 7?
@Kim, eight. Nine if you count the extra book, “The Scottish prisoner.” 10 if you count the graphic novel Outlander, which I don’t. Then you also have the Lord John novels. Regardless, they are wonderful! The only confusion I had was moving from Outlander to the 2nd book. If you read the series, you’ll understand. Just keep plugging along, and I promise that you will get caught up in its wonderfulness!
@Cori, I have been reading Outlander for almost 20 years before the show came on. I really wasn’t disappointed. Obviously, there were some changes, but I really liked it!
I can’t think of one because I usually quit when I don’t like them. I don’t have to love them but I have to at least have an interest in what’s going to happen. I was whatever during Gone Girl and then part 2 started and I was in love. She was such a psycho bitch!
JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy — I didn’t love it when I was reading it, but after I had sat with it for a while after reading it, I’m obsessed! It’s so good and I could chat about it forever!
Brave New World- I was assigned it in high school and never made it past the first 60 pages. Tried to pick it up several times over the last 10 years and finally plowed through.
Definitely the “Gone with the Wind” beginning… super hard to get into it, but once you’re about 5 – 10 pages in, you can’t put it down. And it is one of my favorite books!
A Man Named Ove…I just didn’t like him, the way he talked to the cat…I was shocked how my thoughts about him changed as I got further through the book.?
? I thought the first chapter was horrible but once I got through that I adored it. I had reread it a couple times. I can name on one hand how many I have reread. You didn’t think it was worth it or slow?
@Kim, I loved it from the first sentence. It’s always been my favorite book and one of the few that I think the movie was amazing! Go set a watchman took me a while to warm up to.
I first read it in 8th grade and just didn’t feel it right away. I do love everything about it though. I had a difficult time with Go set a watchman because of the direction of Atticus but still enjoyed it. Also read a book one of Harper Lee’s friend wrote about her. I so enjoyed it.
The Host by Stephenie Meyer. The desert chapters…ugh!!! I seriously just wanted her to die so that I could be done with it. But after that, I couldn’t put the book down.
I loved that book. I really got attached to the character. That was one that I was so sad it was over. It’s crazy how we all relate to writing differently.
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” series. For the first two books, they didn’t get moving until after the first 100 pages. However, I think the 3rd one jumped right in. But once they got going, completely worth it.
I have read both books by the new author, David Lagercrantz. I was very impressed with his continuation of Lisbeth’s story. I found them very exciting! I did read the others again before I read the new ones so that may be a part of why I had no trouble getting into them
I picked this book for my book club years ago and everyone hated me for it! I thought it was kind of fascinating though. I don’t mind the darker, grittier stuff as long as it’s part of an interesting storyline and not just gratuitous.
Eleanor Oliphant
For me, it was Cutting for Stone! It could have been 100 pages shorter and been perfect but the ending was worth the wait!
Loved it though. Did drag some.
@Madalene I would have quit but I bought it at full price on my Kindle and was determined to finish it. So glad I did!!!
@Leah ♥️
A Gentleman in Moscow
Absolutely loved that book.
@Madalene me too! Glad I stuck with it
OMG yes but how I wound up LOVING it and loving the Count!
@Lori yes!!!
@Kandi I gave my book to friend who has started and stopped a few times. I keep telling her to forge on!! Now that there’s talks of a movie I want to read it again.
@Lori there’s talks of a movie?! I hadn’t heard that!!
@Kandi http://variety.com/2018/tv/news/kenneth-branagh-a-gentleman-in-moscow-1202742322/
@Lori that’s awesome!
I always have mixed feelings about seeing a movie when I love the book
@Lori I agree, but I can’t not watch them!
Yes. Agree ?. I actually took out twice from library cause I couldn’t get into first time, but once I carried on, I ended up thinking it was a beautifully written period story and one of my favorite books read last year.
@Jessica agreed!
The first Outlander. But then I just inhaled the entire series.
I just bought that at a goodwill bookstore & have heard that from so many people.
How long does it usually take for the books to get good? The first 50 or 100 pages?
@Kim I think you have to get comfy with the dialogue & accents. Then it’s AMAZING.
@Kim about 100, but the rest is bliss!
Finders Keepers – 2nd in the Mr. Mercedes Trilogy. I’m still struggling to continue but some parts are really good which is keeping me going.
Palm trees in the snow!!! Totally worth it excellent book
It’s one of my favorite books.
Anne Rice The Witching Hour. Actually stopped reading it and picked it up months later and totally devoured it. (Years and years ago)
A Prayer for Owen Meany. ❤️❤️❤️
A Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole
The Woman in White
this ended up being one of my all time favorites but took me a long time to get into, I started it because Nora Ephron talked about it being one of her favorites in a memoir
It took me 7 years to finally get through “the lovely bones”. It wasn’t until the movie came out that I finally finished it! The movie was AWFUL!
Ugh! The movie was so disappointing.
Winter Garden
Oh I loved that book so much.
@Jamie I did too! Once I got into it. Took me a while!
The Rosie Project
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Outlander ??
Agree! It has what I call a “Gone with the Wind” beginning… super hard to get into it, but once you’re about 5 – 10 pages in, you can’t put it down. And both are 2 of my favorite books!
Loved Outlander!! Will she wrote the next one already?!
@Becky. Exactly.
@Tonia omg I hope so soon.
Do you ladies watch the show or did you just read the books first?
I actually started the series when it came out in the late nineties. I have been reading the books as they have been published. I have not been overly disappointed in the series, I think they’re trying to keep it as true to the books as possible, and there are so many side stories! If I look at it separately, I love the series. But the books will always be my 1st love…
@Becky good to know! I ? the show!
I havent watched the show yet. I like what I have imagined.
So what everyone’s saying about outlander is that it’s worth it once your into it! That’s reassuring! I just bought the book, but have heard that it can be taxing at first!
How many are in the series? 7?
@Kim let me know how it is!
@Cori, I have been reading Outlander for almost 20 years before the show came on. I really wasn’t disappointed. Obviously, there were some changes, but I really liked it!
@Emily I did both
@Tonia which one first?
@Emily the books, had finished before they announced the series and highly anticipated its debut. Ready for another installment of the books though
A man called I’ve
*ove
Yes! I only kept reading because my book club picked it, but the second half was wonderful!
Same!!!
I guess I should finish it?
Poisonwood Bible
I can’t think of one because I usually quit when I don’t like them. I don’t have to love them but I have to at least have an interest in what’s going to happen. I was whatever during Gone Girl and then part 2 started and I was in love. She was such a psycho bitch!
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is a beast but its…well…amazing!
JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy — I didn’t love it when I was reading it, but after I had sat with it for a while after reading it, I’m obsessed! It’s so good and I could chat about it forever!
I loved that book!
@Nicole – I have a theory that it’s a little autobiographical
Interesting! I hadn’t thought about that but that makes sense
A Man Called Ove
I said the same thing!
Girl…Through most of the book I was like “Why does everyone say this is so great?!?” Then, by the end, I was ugly crying…..lol
That was me too!
??
Even after finishing it, I hated it.
American Gods
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
I loved the first one.because of the mystery with the family but I struggled with the 2nd. Never bothered with the others.
Agreed! Took me forever, but once I was, I was hooked.
American Pastoral. I finally gave up, but I feel at some point I need to go back and just finish the book.
Catch-22
Years ago I plowed through to impress a boy I thought was smart. Can’t remember his name but remember I loved that book by the end.
Wicked
Unbroken
Unbroken
I don’t know, cuz I never made it ?
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
The Night Circus
I just could not like this book. I threw it.
It took me two tries. Once I got into it the second time, I couldn’t put it down.
Yes totally worth it. I loved that book.
I picked this up and put it down so many times, then finally forced myself to get through it on a road trip…and now it’s one of my absolute favorites
Poisonwood Bible
I think I tried reading this and put it back on the shelf years ago….. it’s still there! Lol!
@Leah once I forced myself into it I really liked it,
A Man Named Ove…I just didn’t like him, the way he talked to the cat…I was shocked how my thoughts about him changed as I got further through the book.?
The new Sophie Kinsella book Surprise Me
Agreed!
Atonement. By the second section (100ish pages), I couldn’t put it down.
Watch Me Disappear
The stand

@Kim I read that one too & really enjoyed it! Harper lee is my all time favorite
I LOVE to kill a mocking bird and cannot stand Go Set a Watchman. I just pretend that it doesn’t exist lol
Gone Girl. Hated the characters but I liked the way the ending was written…
Girl with the dragon tattoo and most Anne Rice books
Definitely The Goldfinch. Oh wait you wanted books that finished strong. Nope not this one. Never really got enthralled in it
I couldn’t finish that one.
This book killed me. I pretty much hated it from start to finish. I stuck with it because SO many people said it was great. UGH
This book was torture. But her other book, The Secret History, is one of my all time favorites.
@Amy mine also. I really enjoyed The Secret History.
You by Kepnes but at some point after being horrified then became fascinated and then couldn’t put. It. Down.
A Confederacy of Dunces
I had to resort to audio for that one…
Despised that book. Never finished it.
@Lisa it was strange but I like that I have a “smart” book under my belt.
God awful book but finished it.
Watership Down
Following
The girl with the dragon tattoo
The Prince by Machiavelli
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” series. For the first two books, they didn’t get moving until after the first 100 pages. However, I think the 3rd one jumped right in. But once they got going, completely worth it.
Agreed. Have you read the 4th one? I can’t decide if I want to try it since it’s a new author. Also, the jacket description is all over the place.
@Kadie I haven’t. Since it is a new author, I’m hesitant to give it a try.
Agreed. I tried the new author but struggled to get into it. Had to return it to the library. I said I would try again but i haven’t.
I have read both books by the new author, David Lagercrantz. I was very impressed with his continuation of Lisbeth’s story. I found them very exciting! I did read the others again before I read the new ones so that may be a part of why I had no trouble getting into them
Completely agree. Must power through those first ? to get to the good stuff!
Ready Player One
Just Kids by Patti Smith. Slow to start off but ends up being a truly awesome rock and roll memoir, if you like that sort of thing.
Three Musketeers
Fountainhead
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier
I gave up on into the water… I kept trying but just couldn’t get into it
First time in a long time I gave up on a book partway through
The Book Thief
Let’s Talk About Kevin.
I picked this book for my book club years ago and everyone hated me for it! I thought it was kind of fascinating though. I don’t mind the darker, grittier stuff as long as it’s part of an interesting storyline and not just gratuitous.
Discovery of Witches was a slow starter for me, but I ended up absolutely loving it.
Catcher in the Rye was tough for me to get into
