For example, I love M.M. Kaye, who wrote The Far Pavilions. It was pretty popular back in the day, but she didn’t write it until she was in her seventies — before then she wrote a bunch of great books that I love, but most people I ask have never heard of her. My favorite by her is called Shadow of the Moon.
I find Anne Tyler particularly humorous, yet original, poignant and easy to relate to. While The Accidental Tourist may be Tyler’s most popular book, her whole catalogue of books is quite special.
I’m always shocked over who doesn’t know of these: -Kazuo Ishiguro -Haruki Murakami -I LOVED one novella by Hitomi Kanehara -I dig Sarah Waters -Donna Tartt -Marya Hornbacher
Not sure that it’s been translated into English, although your name suggests that you might get along with Swedish language 😛 We have it in Estonian and I love it! 🙂
well for sure I “get” the Scandinavian culture, which is part of the appeal for me, but not a speaker/ reader of it- would love to. My Dad always regretted not learning it from his parents.
I recently read, as part of a New England trip research program (!), Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. He is pretty much unknown in Australia (although a minor classic in the US I believe). This book was a slow burning marvel. Giving the satisfaction of having eaten a really good roast dinner (as opposed to a bowl of popcorn).
Matthew Woodring Stover. He’s actually fairly well known for his work on star wars, but his original work isn’t as well known as it probably should be. His Cain series is mind-blowing.
Book – Sometimes a Great Notion. Everybody knows Kesey’s One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest but this is a neglected gem of his. Authors Samuel R Delaney, Thomas Ligotti and Kevin Barry (City of Bohane)
Girish karnad… people might have seen him in movies and as a director but his rise as a great playwright marked the age of modern indian playwriting in kannada just as Mohan Rakesh in Hindi.. ?
