Hello everyone I am just wondering what people like about audible and is it worth it
Audible is worth the $15 a month to me because the titles I want are immediately available. The site is easy to use. Users can share books.
I just buy the titles I want. Audio is linked in with deals so I pay about £1 for book and £3 for audio (just over $5)
Get through 2 a month so for me it’s better.
Get deals through kindofbooks. Bookbub. Bookhippo.
I really enjoy listening to books on Audible and at £7.99 a month it is great value for money. I listen when I do my daily Pilate exercises and when I go walking.
I like it cause I listen to books while I drive and also while crocheting ! It also has all new releases and you don’t have to wait for them .
It wouldn’t be worth it for me because I don’t want to own the audiobooks after I listen to them and I go through at least 5 per month. I just use the free library apps
I do, too, but I get frustrated, because sometimes I have to wait forever to get them, or worse, they don’t even have what I’m looking for. 🙁
Puts me to sleep. Rather read the book
I listen while folding laundry. It makes me look forward to that chore. I try to buy only very long books and they take me a long time to get through so I find it worth it. I pause my membership when I have too many books in my queue and need to catch up.
Check your local library’s digital selections – audio books for free!
Worth it to me. I’ve been a member for years.
As an audiobook junkie, Audible has its place, however it is very expensive. I download audiobooks to my listening devices (MP3 players) free of charge from the library or other sources on the internet.
I usually only upgrade the books I have already purchased from Kindle/Amazon. It’s much cheaper and then I can continue reading as I walk the dog or go on a long drive. I guess I enjoy owning them because I always hope my teenagers will want to get into certain books like I do!
I borrow more audiobooks from my library network and the 4 libraries I pay for a non-resident card to. However, I do have audible and use it for books the libraries don’t have. It is worth it if you do t have another means to get audiobooks. I pay for a year at a time and get the 12 credits at once. You save as most audiobooks are $25-30 and it’s about $13 a book for the annual plan. Also, once your credits are low they offer specials to get more cheap. They also run $5 and BOGO sales regularly.
I use Libby (OverDrive) every day for free!
@Kay – me too?
I also use Libby.
I love audible when I am traveling , cleaning house and taking my son Baseball practice. I am able to tune out the parents yammering and listen to a book . I also listen when I am on the treadmill. I look for books that are 9 hours or more.
I enjoy listening to books on CD when I drive
I use Libby through my library and pay a subscription to another library system to get Hoopla and Libby.
Love audio books . They come in handy when driving . They are great if the reader/readers are good at putting feelings into the characters. I particularly love Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. ?
In the time it takes for me to drive to work, I can get an hour’s worth of reading in!
I love the selection on Audible. They also have incredible semi-annual book sales. I do the two credits per month for $22.95 but can purchase three extra credits for $34.41 if there are a lot of new books I’m interested in. I know the big behemoth that is Amazon but I still prefer Audible. I especially love it for heavy subject books; I just finished The Tattooist of Auschwitz on it and couldn’t imagine enjoying the physical book read in my voice as much.
Never tried it but then I prefer hardcover!
I’m an audible convert. I wasn’t an audiobook person but after I tried it I’m now hooked. Audible has a great selection and loads of offers so I think it’s worth the monthly subscription
I love it! I manage a stable and I can listen while I walk horses out and do chores. It makes some cold early mornings easier when I can wait to get back to my book!
Love it listen in the car daily. App on phone, easy !!!
Love it too many times I will read a book then later do on Audible is a very different perspective
I usually love to walk, but was having trouble getting motivated recently. A friend who walks and listens to books on her phone convinced me to try that, and boy did it work! I couldn’t wait to walk and hear more of my book!
I love Audible! I’m an aural learner and my eyes get tired. And if you don’t like the book, you can return it with no problems. One was a mistake in title. One was a reader I couldn’t stand. Another set of 7 books were in the wrong language months after I’d bought them.
I do my needle point or other hand work and listen to books. Also, used to drive alone for work and audio books were a Godsend.
Love it. Listen on long commutes and in the gym. Very convenient
Brilliant value if you regularly listen to audio books. I read a physical book first then, IF I love it, put it on my Audible wishlist. I listen on my iPod Classic on trains, planes, waiting for appointments, in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. Some of the classics are available as radio dramatisations which can be excellent. Always check the comments about the narrator before you buy.
Use audio books when I exercise, drive long trips, instead of TV when doing chores or crafts like ironing or sewing, making bread, taking a leisurely bath, with earphones on train or plane….endless.
I love it! I listen while I clean, take a walk….
I was skeptical because I love physical books, but the second I joined I was hooked. I can listen at work, cooking, cleaning, etc. My house is actually cleaner because I want to listen to just one (okay, five) more chapters. It’s great! I do, however, tend to stick to nonfiction or memoirs, because complicated plot twists are somewhat hard to follow, for me at least.
I don’t care for them, because I find my mind wonders.
My husband and I always go to the library for audibles if we are on a road trip!! They’re great!! My friend’s husband has cancer and gets tired so I’ve gotten some audibles for him. They’re great!!
@Laurie do you have to pay anything from the library ?
@Julie No. We really got into the Pendergast series by Child’s and Preston.
Love audible. I have a subscription for two a month. I get most my audiobooks from the library, but when I want/need a book that’s not available I can always get it on Audible! Great way to read even when you’re very busy.
I drive 8 hours about once a month to see my daughter and it’s so convenient! Also, if I fail to read my book club book in time, I can listen and get things done. I’m so glad I joined.
I have found that I listen to books that I might not read. The Plant Messiah.. please, it was excellent ( for my master gardening book club) but I would have had trouble with genus and species pronunciations
I live out in the boonies so everywhere I go it’s a little no drive. I no longer get agitated or upset in traffic jams – more time to listen to my book! I drive slower since I want more time to listen to the story. I listen while I am cooking or doing projects around the house/yard. I went years not being able to read much because I never had time to sit and read. With audio books I can read a lot.
I get Kindle books with the audio, so I can actually read when I do have the time to sit and read.
This may be a stupid question but one I don’t know the answer to! I have never listened to a whole audio book…I sampled one on my laptop one time but didn’t want to sit still to listen to the whole book My laptop is what I use to download my regular books onto my Kindle Paper White. My question is do I have to listen to audio books on my laptop? or can I listen on my Kindle?
Also what device do you use to listen in the car?
With my laptop I think I would get fidgety sitting in one spot for long listening plus it is too cumbersome to take to bed~
I have the kindle and the audio app on my iPad. I can’t sit that long, that’s why I listen to audio books. Some people listen on their iPhones, but, I like being able to switch between reading/listening and my old eyes can’t read on the phone.
@Ann same here! I have eye problems and optic migraines so this could help me~ My daughter is coming over tomorrow with my grandbaby, so I will ask her what all I need to buy to be able to listen in my car and at home when my eyes are bothering me! Thank you my friend….:)
I love my audible books! They keep me company when I’m driving or when I’m doing housework. I really recommend this way of “reading” to anyone. PS. It doesn’t cost much to try it out. Give it a go and see how you feel about it.
I think I need to get my daughter to tell me what I need to buy and how to set up so I can listen in the car or when I am doing house work! I am not technically savvy enough! I am assuming some kind of Bluetooth….thing!
I don’t think my Kindle Paper White has this capability!
Good for you…it sounds like you can get lots done and still enjoy your stories!!!…<3
@Linda I use Bluetooth with my iPhone in the car to listen to my audible books.
Sorry I’m a bit thick ?
how do they work ?
Do you get them on cd to listen in the car ? And do you pay monthly ?
Or do you need an app ? ?
@Julie – I have both the Kindle and Audible apps on my iPad so I download to that device. I used to listen to CDs on long trips, but, this is much cheaper and you don’t need to worry about changing CDs while driving.
@Ann …So I need to buy an iPad and headphones???
@Linda no you can listen with your phone! I have a little Bluetooth earpiece that I usually use but our daughter got me a Bluetooth thing that plugs into the cars cigarette lighter and you can then listen through the cars radio! It’s amazing!!!
How much do people pay pls ? Per month
My iPad has Bluetooth so I can listen on the car speakers. I also have Bluetooth speakers around the house, so I can walk around the house and still listen, without carrying the iPad with me. ?
@Becky OH …that would be AWESOME~ I am getting a new smart phone next week so I will make sure it has that capability with blue tooth!!!
Oh I am sooooooooooooo excited just anticipating!
Thank YOU…:)
@Linda You are so welcome! I listen to my books when ever I get in the car by myself. Check your messages and I’ll send you links to the earpiece I use.
I like to listen to audio books, but I prefer to borrow them through my library using the Overdrive or Libby apps. I also watch for specials of Kindle Unlimited 3 months for $0.99. I did that twice this past year and listened to a lot of borrowed books that way.
I love Audible. You can listen anytime, anywhere.
I listen to audio books on overdrive from public library. Vision issues
I love audio books. I listen while cleaning my house, driving and knitting. Audio books have helped me increase my reading. And some of the narrators are so brilliant! I recommend trying one or two.
Yes…I do needle work…I LOVE reading however, I would LOVE to listen to audible books when I am doing that!!!
Do you have some favorite narrators/books?
@Linda well, Elinor Oliphant is Completely Fine was a great audio book. The Handmaid’s Tale read by Claire Danes was wonderful. And, Born to Run is read by the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. Recently, I listened to Circe by Madeleine Miller. That was so great.
Thank you @Cori I appreciate the recommendations!!!
No, I paid for it for a year and honestly use my library’s free app so much I used it only 1 time to get a title I didn’t want to wait for.
I love it but I listen to books while driving, running and at work
No
My sister loves it, I find it too distracting while I’m driving.
Check and see if you library has Overdrive or Libby. You can borrow audio books directly to your phone for free.
I have Overdrive on my laptop but you are saying I can also put the app on my smart phone and then listen to audio through my phone? I am assuming you also have to have blue tooth?
Linda Metzger I have the app on my iPhone. I do have Bluetooth capability but usually listen with just my phone’s speakers. I can download all the chapters or just a few. My last phone was nearly full so I wasn’t able to have all chapters to a huge book. I can listen to to at faster speeds and has a 10 second fast forward and go back buttons.
I love Nicholas Sparks audio books read by Holter Graham!!!❤ Dear John & The Choice (thought there was one more but can’t think) his voice is SO wonderful. I’ve listened to them several times ❤❤
That is what I would be looking for ….a soothing voice yet using expressioning!..:)
@Linda yes, he has and its sexy, lol
I like it but don’t use it because I get my books from the library
@Mollie you can borrow audio books from the library using overdrive.
I know. That’s how I get my books from the library
@Cori yes you can!
I enjoy radio programs featuring storytelling but haven’t tried audible books. I also have never tried any form of ereader for books, though I read journalism articles online. I view myself as a book reader. I love the feel of a book in my hands. Since I enjoy switching from among these I see no reason to change it and will continue reading real books as long as possible.
I Do Not do This is not a good idea.
Why not grab your pillow and blanky. Scary!!
This was in reply to listening while driving.
I do listen while cleaning
I love it!
How much do you all pay ?
I like audible in the car and when we travel so I can listen to a book and crochet at the same time.
Check and see if your library has cloudLibrary!
I use the overdrive app with my library. I never have to pay for a book.
I love it???
Yes it’s worth it I love it use it everyday
I have Amazon Prime so I get one audible free each month and I have Kindle Unlimited so many books are also free to listen too. Love it!
@M I didn’t know prime users got a free audible book a month how do you do this?
@Levona Just click on a book and click on the audible selection. You will see an Audible credit. They don’t renew that I know of. So if you don’t use it you lose it. I think?
@M does it work for any audible book or just certain ones?
It may have been an offer? I can’t find info on it. But there are many books that are free if you link your audible account to amazon with Kindle Unlimited.
I love audible. I use it nearly every day. I buy books from it that I’ve listened to from the library and must have in my life. I also have enjoyed their originals
I do audible while walking, it’s great for me.
I’m too much of a cheapskate, so I check out my audio books from the library. Still, I hear it’s great.
Audio books are very enjoyable especially when traveling. I usually go to the library before the trip. I’ll get a couple extra CDs in case I don’t like one. Listen to what you like to read. Mesmerizing but not distracting to driving. Using audiobooks on a trip, the time goes by quicker and I’m not as tired.
Love it!!
I do not use audible because there are no many free options at my local library. I use Hoopla, Overdrive, and RB Digital.
I do use audibles when we travel and I also like that I can listen while doing other things around the house.
I use it all the time to keep up with reading groups. Your library may have a free app though.
If you like romance novels you can get the romance package for a flat rate monthly subscription if you have Amazon prime it’s cheaper. I pay $8.75 a month and listen to as many in the package as I want.
That you can do so many things while reading , its awesome for me that I’m a bee in this house with my toddle, infant and 8 years old.??♀️
Watch for their sales, that’s where you bring the cost down. And if I don’t have money for the sales, then I buy monthly audiobooks that I know I will be reading multiple times in the years coming up… like LoTR & the Harry Potter books, etc.
