Maybe Bedknob and Broomstick as well as the original Mary Poppins books? Make sure you find the whole ones, not movie based stuff. Bedknob is a whole series and I think there is at least a sequel to Poppins.
The Chronicles of Narnia also moves from a real world to a fantasy setting and back again (although it’s set at a later time period than the other books mentioned, WW II and just after the war).

Perhaps Roald Dahl books.
Thank you .I read alot.?
I love, love, love 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. Obviously non-human protaganists, but it might have the British charm you’re after.
I read that book a few years ago and absolutely loved it. But my favorite of hers is I capture the castle.

Clive Barker’s books for kids are interesting.
Also, “Un Lun Dun,” by China Mieville is pretty good.
E. Nesbit books are fabulous and full of imagination!
