Are you looking for a happy ending or do you mind crying? How about a good funny romance? For funny happy romances, try Jennifer Crusie. Her books are awesome. For a good romance that will make you cry, try Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. For a superhero romance try Wearing the Cape by Marion G Harmon. For an excellent magical romance, try Sunshine by Robin McKinley.
@Kathy, have you read One Plus One by Jojo Moyes? I really liked it. And Robyn Carr writes a nice romance series that starts with Virgin River. Oh, and there’s always Nora Roberts for a dependable romance.
WOW! I knew I could count on you guys!! Thank you so much! Here’s my favorite for what it’s worth Peony in Love by Lisa See. One of my all time favorite s actually all of hers are good. Thanks again!
Julie Garwood started my love of romances back in high school. I’ve read all of her books. What is your favorite? Mine is Ransom for historical, Heartbreaker for contemporary.
Love those as well. The Prize also holds a special place in my heart. I was really bored on vacation hanging out with older relatives that I didn’t know when I was about 14, I found it on a book shelf and couldn’t put it down. When I got home I looked her up at the library and read all her books ?
Ohhhh, I like The Prize as well. She is actually the only author I ever sent an email to, I read her on my breaks from college and wanted to thank her for allowing me to lose myself in her stories. She replied and said how she appreciated my sharing with her. It was pretty ?.
I would not label GWW as a love story. More of a GREAT survival story. Screw the movie. Scarlet is the muscle and brains. Melony is the conniver and smoke screen. Both strong women who made a good team
Gone with the Wind is the ultimate love story! Scarlet and Tara! Scarlet and Ashley! BRETT and Scarlett! Melanie and Scarlet. Scarlet and Bonnie! Mammie! GWTW is about unrequited love, misplaced LOVE, blind love and love lost! It just doesnt get better than that! Plus it details so graphically, the passing of an era!
I don’t know if it’s ever been officially categorized as romance but in my mind, that’s exactly what it is – a romance set against the backdrop of the civil war – just as the movie Titanic is a romance set against the backdrop of that great disaster.
Austin’s Persuasion, Goldman’s The Princess Bride, Gaskell’s North and South, Sally Thorne’s The Hating Game, Patchett’s Bel Canto, pretty much anything by Susanna Kearsley (The Winter Sea) or Penny Reid (Neanderthal Seeks Human), Mariana Zapata’s The Wall of Winnipeg and Me…
I highly recommend the novel “A LITTLE LOVE” by C.C. Medina. It was a delightful story, which came as a pleasant surprise, because I didn’t know what to expect. This is a modern day romance, centered around the lives of 4 women – Isabel, a Cuban-American single mother with a history of failed relationships; Lucinda, a wealthy Dominican-American socialite who is fearful that her husband may be having an affair; Mercy, a Cuban emigre who, through sheer hard work, has become a successful real estate agent; and Julia, a Mexican-American professor and author.
Holy buckets! The list is still growing! I’m starting at the top tomorrow and working my way through the list, at least this should get me through winter! You guys are awesome!!?
“THE SLEEPING DICTIONARY” – Sujata Massey. This is one of the best, most colorful, and dramatic novels I read this year. Set in the waning days of the British Raj in India, it is centered around the life of Kamala (one of many names she assumed through the years), who, at the age of 10 in 1930, witnesses the destruction of her village by a flood and barely survives – as an orphan. She ends up in a British boarding school, where she works as a servant and discovers she has a gift for languages. She learns to read and develops a passion for books and a remarkable facility in the English language, so much so that she can speak it like any well-heeled Briton. Years pass and Kamala has a variety of experiences that puts her at the heart of the resistance movement to British rule during WWII (while working for the British). Reading this novel will bring India that much closer in one’s consciousness.

Any of the historical romances by Julie Garwood. Don’t care for her newer stuff as much. Also Jude Deveraux.
Julie Garwood started my love of romances back in high school. I’ve read all of her books. What is your favorite? Mine is Ransom for historical, Heartbreaker for contemporary.
I actually have 2 that I go back and read or listen to upon occasion, Saving Grace and The Secret. I just could never get into her contemporary stuff.
Love those as well. The Prize also holds a special place in my heart. I was really bored on vacation hanging out with older relatives that I didn’t know when I was about 14, I found it on a book shelf and couldn’t put it down. When I got home I looked her up at the library and read all her books ?
I definitely prefer her historical as well

I read this book probably 45 years ago after I moved to Alaska to teach school. One of these I’m going to reread it.
A Court of Thorns and Roses series.
Trust me. No spoilers. Just trust me.

The Secret Wife by Gil Paul
Loved this book.

You’ve got me interested. Need to spend more reading time in India.
