We certainly have our favourite Detectives from our favourite authors. Who are your favourite TV Detectives?

DCI Banks, Rebus
Robert Goren from Law and Order: Criminal Intent ?
Luther. Head and shoulders above the rest IMHO. Although not a detective, Robbie Coltrane’s Cracker from the nineties was also a favourite of mine. Thinking back on it, his character must have been a subconscious influence on my forensic psychiatrist, ‘Doc’, in Remorseless – and I’ve only just realised, thinking about TV series for this post!
my problem with Luther – and several other tv detectives of modern times – is that he is so damaged he’d have been pensioned off in real terms.
That’s true, Jan. Although it is all just fiction, innit?! 😉
True – but he is a tad OTT 🙂
Which is down to the scripts of course
I generally prefer realism too but, in his case, the acting and the scripts (despite your very accurate criticism) are well worth watching. Still my favourite despite having seen plenty of suggestions from others on here now. 🙂
to some extent – but there is a line. Loved the acting but had issues with the credibility. If it were Spooks or similar its easier for agents to have ‘issues’ and be permitted to go off on one without getting handed their P45 B|
Callan and Agatha christie Joan Hickson Ms Marple
I loved Callan too, Liz, and forgot all about that series. Having said that, he was a spook really rather than a detective so we’re both going a little off topic with our choices, I think! 😉
Yes but it was great acting and storylines.
Vera, Jeremy Brett’s Holmes, Joan Hickson’s Miss Marple, David Suchet’s Poirot, Lord PW, Callan (though was he really a detective? Wasn’t he really an Mi5 or similar agent?)
Scott and Bailey – until the last series which lost the plot
Catherine Cawood (Happy Valley)
Roy Grace by Peter James
He’s not a tv detective tho’ Linda! ??
Agatha Christie – Poirot and Miss Marple.
Tony Hill of Wire in the Blood, but he was really a dysfunctional psychologist, but a great detective all the same 🙂
I so really really loved the whole series (and books) and i’m still so very sad it got cancelled…
I did a lot of work on Wire in the Blood for Coastal Productions as a rigger 🙂 great fun
